Stuff at NB is stored in variously sized bin containers with tracking tags to keep each collection of stuff tidy and useful.

Inspired by the epic Electronics lab's component bins and parts tracking database.

We've had asset tags and QR codes before, the idea that's new here is the collection tag as a grouping of things which may have asset tags inside the bin.

How to bin things

Physical labels are better than nothing, data tracking is even better.

  • Dry-erase labels with bin number URLs on them and QR codes.
  • You can take a picture of the bin and the QR code is in the picture from top down on the lid which is tethered to its bin.
  • Uploading that picture will automatically scan the QR code associating the contents photo with the bin it relates to and putting the photo on that bin's page.
  • ML computer Vision can recognize objects in the bin as similar to tracked assets or known items using services like Amazon's product matching camera API. This can generate a text description to go with the picture.
