Programming for Poets

This is for everyone who wants to learn how to program but has told themselves it's "too hard."

I know how easy it is to feel dumb in the face of computers -- I do it every day -- and this will be a supportive and easy going group, with emphasis on hands-on learning rather than formal lectures. People will help each other as they get up to speed. I'm especially keen to reach people who think they "can't do programming" -- because they can.

(In a previous life I (Jon) was the head instructor for a large introductory programming course: I've taught hundreds of people how to program, and won a teaching award for doing it.)

We'll be using "processing" (http://www.processing.org), a simple yet powerful graphic programming language targeted to artists and designers. Learning to program a processing "sketch" is straightforward and quickly rewarding: you can get up to speed and produce algorithmic art and interactive games in a session or two.

Though it is simple, processing is a full-featured language, not a "toy": the concepts you will learn (variables, loops, functions, arrays) are fundamental and necessary for programming in any other language.

You can run sketches right in your browser with no download or install. Try it: http://sketch.processing.org/ (click on the top left arrow to run). More information, including downloads for all computers can be found at http://www.processing.org. I suggest you try some of the tutorials: you may not even need a class!

sign up
If you might be interested, please sign up below. Thursday evenings look relatively free at NB, modulo Five_Minutes_of_Fame. We'll start at 8. If you are interested but can't make it because of the time, please note it and we'll see what we can do.

preparation
If you want to be able to jump right in, download and install processing from here: http://www.processing.org/download/

and consider reading -- or better yet working through -- a tutorial:
Please put name/nick and preferred alternate times
The book is described as follows:

So Long a Letter is a landmark book - a sensation in its own country and an education for outsiders. Mariama Ba, a longtime women's activist, set out to write a book that exposed the double standard between men and women in Africa. The result, So Long a Letter, eventually won the first Noma Award for Publishing in Africa. The book itself takes the form of a long letter written by a widow, Ramatoulaye, to her friend, over the mandatory forty-day mourning period following the death of a husband. Both women had married for love and had happy, productive marriages; both were educated, had work they loved and were intellectually alive. During their lives, both of these women's husbands chose to take a second wife - and each woman then made a different choice. Ramatoulaye decided to stay married, although it meant rarely seeing her husband and knowing that he was squandering money on a young girl, a friend of her own daughter. Ramatoulaye's friend divorced her husband and eventually left the country, settling in the United States. In her letter, Ramatoulaye examines her life and that of other women of Senegal - their upbringing and training and the cultural restrictions placed upon them. It is a devastating attack, made all the more powerful because of the intelligence and maturity of the narrator and the ability of Mariama Ba to honor two very different choices within one framework.

A bit of background on me:

I lived in both France and Quebec for about 10 years. I learned to speak French while living in both places, so the French I'll be teaching is very much how people talk. Also, because I learned French by hearing and speaking it, my French writing skills are craptastic, so I am planning to focus more on conversational French. If someone else is a wiz at writing French, speak up!

If you could write down your name and your level of French below that would be really helpful.

Beginners
*Mitch I can sorta order food in French.
*dpc i lived in france for about a year, during which i learned enough french to be a danger to myself.

Intermediate
*Noah - interested, but probably won't make it on many Wednesdays for a while - I can get around ok in French, but would need a lot of practice to become fluent
*Billy - i've been out of practice since high school.
*Jeremy I can have simple conversations. I have one year of college French, plus several years of Spanish and three minus epsilon degrees in Linguistics, which makes me a good faker. I also have motivation: big fan of Franco-Belgian comics, and my wife is a native Francophone.

*Eve - sorry to miss first class, will try to come next time. My French is second-rate, I read fairly well but would like to understand spoken French faster. 3-4 years in school; French relatives; but I become very rusty in between trips.

*aestetix - five years of french in middle/high school, been to France several times, etc. Strong understanding of grammatical structure, although I haven't touched it in years and am quite rusty.

*Chris - Undergrad double major in Linguistics and French Language and Literature, but August 2009 was my first trip to France in 10 years. For the most part, Parisians did not break into English upon hearing me, but I'm rusty. Determined to build back up and not let it slip again!

We're meeting on October 13th at 6:30 to discuss Une Si Longue Lettre.

Advanced

Advanced
How can I go?

I have attached the release form we'll need to tour NIF. This will take literally two minutes (or less) to fill out.

Some important points:

1. Fill out the left side of the form completely. It has to by typed (no handwritten forms will be accepted).

2. DO NOT submit the form to NIF. Email it back to me zazenergy [at] gmail [dot]com and I will submit the forms for our group. I will keep your information completely confidential and once we are confirmed I will destroy all forms in my possession.

3. I need all completed forms for the Fall tour by July 31st to guarantee our placement for an October tour.

Fun fun fun!

Ok, so I'm confirmed. Now, how in the name of god do I get to Livermore?

Laura -- I'm more than happy to rent a car and can take up to four people (from SF). Please put your name below (and email) if you are in fact confirmed to attend and if you have a car you can bring or if you need a ride.
Meeting at 7:00 on Wednesday. We'll break around 8:30. Everyone is welcome!

Class One Overview 6/24

I. Housekeeping

- Discover everyone's level of French

- Determine what people want to be able to do with French

- Do we want to incorporate French culture at all?

- Are there any advanced students that would like to focus on French books/reading?

II. Lesson One

- Talk the way 'they' do: Greetings and Introductions

- A little grammar: To be 'être' and to have 'avoir'

- Cross cultural Minute: Why the French are rude

- Slang/swearing/etc.

Class Two Overview Agenda: 7/1

- We had two Jeremy and D P who attended, both of which are more intermediate, so this class focused more on conversational French.

Meeting at 8:30 on Wednesday. More advanced students are encouraged to come around 9:00. We'll break around 10. We'll start our first class on 6/24.

-- Laura

Resources:

Ma France -- BBC French Language learning series we'll be using

French Lessons -- Greater focus on traditional learning with a heavier emphasis on grammar

Advanced
*your name here

</div><div style="float: left; width: 2%">
</div>
<div style="float: left; width: 49%">

Date: August 11th

I have attached the release form we'll need to tour NIF. This will take literally two minutes (or less) to fill out.

Some important points:

1. Fill out the left side of the form completely. It has to by typed (no handwritten forms will be accepted).

2. DO NOT submit the form to NIF. Email it back to me zazenergy [at] gmail [dot]com and I will submit the forms for our group. I will keep your information completely confidential and once we are confirmed I will destroy all forms in my possession.

3. I need all completed forms by this Friday (7/10) to guarantee our placement.

Again, there are only 9 spots available, so the first 8 forms I get back will be signed up for August 11th. If we have overwhelming demand to tour NIF, I am more than happy to arrange a second tour on another date.

3. I need all completed forms by this Friday (7/10) to guarantee our placement.

Again, there are only 9 spots available, so the first 8 forms I get back will be signed up for August 11th. If we have overwhelming demand to tour NIF, I am more than happy to arrange a second tour on another date.

Meeting at 8:30 on Wednesday. More advanced students are encouraged to come around 9:00. We'll break around 10. We'll start our first class on 6/24.
