An introduction to the Atmel AVR family of microcontrollers by [[User:Mightyohm|Jeff]] and [[User:Maltman23|Mitch]].

The curriculum has not been determined, yet, but will include:
* basic electronics
* intro to microcontrollers
* build your own AVR programmer
* how to set up your computer to develop your microcontroller projects
* build a bunch of simple, fun projects, each of which will teach a fundamental microcontroller concept

Microcontrollers are very cheap (as little as $0.50 for the simplest ones), and very powerful! With them you can do an amazingly diverse range of projects, anywhere from turning TVs off in public places, to playing computer games, to making robots move or see, to creating beautiful (or obnoxious) music, to anything your imagination can come up with! And anyone can learn to make their own projects with them, given a little background.

The Atmel AVR family microcontrollers are very easy-to-use, and easy-to-learn. There are lots of free, open-source tools available for it, and lots of open-source projects that have all documentation free for the download online. There is also a user forum called AVRfreaks.org, full of geeks all over the world, 24/7, just waiting to answer your questions about your AVR microcontroller project. For these reasons, and more, it is a very popular family of microcontrollers for the DIY (Do It Yourself) crowd, which is why we've chosen to use it for this set of classes.

This guy went into the back classroom and took Rayc's wallet out of his backpack. Rayc saw him with the wallet in his hand and the guy tried to say it was his. He then started running towards the door and was tackled by Jake. We made him show us that nothing was in his pockets, and he kept avoiding the big pocket in the front of his jacket. This pocket turned out to have Sasha's smart phone. During the search his crack pipe fell onto the floor and broke into many pieces. We let him go and told him not to come back.

He never hacks anything and makes no secret of the fact that he never will. Jesse Z and Alan asked him to not come back repeatedly (February - March '12). Was helping with the Noisebride ustream webcasts. He was asked not to come back due to allegations of organizing illegal activities from within Noisebridge and theft. He had a proxy return to the space a few days later on his behalf to retrieve blankets, etc. that he'd apparently stashed in the darkroom. What his proxy took was apparently not the blankets that he wanted, and he shortly thereafter came upstairs and went into the darkroom, himself leaving with a couple bedsheet-lookin' things. The fabric his associate had taken was found in a heap at the bottom of the elevator and returned to the darkroom. Several days later he returned to Noisebridge with his hand shoved in a gym bag, claiming he had as he continued pushing past people to get into the main space, screaming constantly about killing eveyone and then himself. that everyone was to leave, or he would kill them all. He also claimed that the cops were hot on his trail and would arrive at Noisebridge at any moment, and that he intended to provoke a [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide_by_cop suicide-by-cop]. Not sure on whether or not he did have a gun people were not taking a chance as they filed for the exit. However, Derek, Jedi, Rayc, Ben, stayed behind, calling him on his bullshit, four people swarmed him as he made a b-line sprint for the fire escape. They wrestled him to the floor and removed his bags away from him. Jedi arm barred and escorted Jonathan down the stairs to the sidewalk where he instantly sought out the nearest quickly-amassing phalanx of squad cars. Immediate consensus was that he is not welcome in the space again.

This person named Ilya was behaving irrationally, and confused his own backpack with Patricks, causing suspicion that he was intending to steal things. He also put on Patricks' clothes and said he thought people were allowed to use whatever items were in the space. He had some small, and not particularly valuable, items that he had pocketed, and had stashed random, not valuable, items in the bathroom. He was unable to explain his behavior to Dr. J and was handed over to police, who did not take him into custody, and he was told not to return to Noisebridge.

He was with his brother Alex who did not do anything sketchy and should not be banned. -jake

===Hardware/3D Printing Workstation PC===

There is a Windows PC inbetween the laser cutter and the Makerbot 3D printers.
It is used for game development, 3D Printing and using the laser cutter. Since it has so many uses it is probably wise to be polite and ask anyone if they are waiting on you to print or cut something.

* Magnavox Monitor - sometimes the monitor is blank. This might be a little obvious and i bet a lot of people are too scared to ask why it isn't working (i sort of was), but you just have to tap the channel buttons on the top + and - until you reach the PC. I think the monitor even serves as a television set so don't be surprised if you pop onto the news.
* Login as guest is sufficient
** There is a lasercutter login, so I'm guessing you don't have to be in the lasercutter login. I am guessing that this is for awesome lasercutting projects.
* Saving Time - you can save a lot of time by doing a lot of stuff on your own computer. Some processes which are detailed later on in this wiki like "slicing" can sometimes take up to an hour or more to complete.

This is an easy to use 3D printer. They are from China and have been extremely aggressive about hiring people from the hacker community to evangelize, but I haven't seen people be very open about this. They have good firmware, it is produced by elite university students. They are not part of the open source community.
* Update june 2013 - I think this thing is broken. There is a message not to mess with it. Do not mess with the UP! printer or its boyfriend will come back and whup your ass!
* I do not feel like doing free documentation for a private company that is giving checks to hackers. if someone is into that you can do it.

Nice 3D printers produced in the Bay Area. They visit noisebridge a lot - I feel since it is a private company with noisebridge connections it is in their best interest to handle all their documentation, marketing, training themselves. If you want to do this free work then erase this entry and start wiki-ing away. I'm not really going to do free work for this. They are nice people and they need to do this if they want to become a successful scalable business.
* we only have early prototypes of a Type A machine so far. it is mysterious, on its side.

You don't have to actually work with the 3D printers at noisebridge to get started. A big mistake a lot of beginners do that I see is getting overly obsessed with learning the CAD 3D software and then giving up. I recommend doing that stuff at home and then focusing on doing the 3D printing hardware when you are the space.

This is a huge, exhaustive topic and can take years to master. Try not to get too intimidated. There are a lot of people who studied industrial engineering and like all nerds they can spend a lot of time fussing over things that are technically interesting but not very pragmatic for what you as a beginner want to do.

As always, I'd like to favor open source software, but the stuff out there that is commercial is simply a lot easier for beginners to tackle, plus they can download this for free.

After many hundreds of earth weeks of 24/7 opening, we're thinking about closing down Noisebridge for a couple of weeks for to do all the things that you can't really do when the space is open.

What kind of things, you ask?

We'd like you to tell us, second-person Noisebridge person!

Here's our proposed process. If you have a major Noisebridge structural change or improvement you'd like to conduct, sit write down and write it up as a Proposal For Awesomeness (PFA), similar to an [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Request_for_Comments RFC], using the template below. Along with your PFA, list who you're working on the project with (ask them first!).

Noisebridge will have a big old discussion, and a meeting (possibly multiple meetings) where we'll go through all the proposals, and consent on the ones that will be part of the Rebase. The folks that are included in the PFA get to spend a delightful few days working like ROBOT SLAVES on building up Noisebridge, on a date to also be determined (probably by seeking to maximize the people who volunteered and are available).
