In memory of [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron_Swartz Aaron Swartz], and in coordination with a [[Worldwide Aaron Swartz Memorial Hackathons|world-wide effort]], Noisebridge will be hosting a hackathon starting '''Friday, January 25th''', and continuing through '''Sunday, January 27th'''.

== Intro ==

Aaron was a hacktivist and friend of many in our community. He helped create RSS 1.0; contributed to Creative Commons; was an early builder of Reddit, where he's often acknowledged as a co-founder; created the [http://webpy.org/ web.py] framework; and more recently, became a data liberator, first with PACER and then with scholarly articles from JSTOR, both of which got him into trouble with the law.

Aaron's [http://demandprogress.org/ Demand Progress] project helped stop SOPA, the Stop Online Piracy Act in the US, which threatened to have far reaching unintended consequences.

Aaron Swartz committed suicide on Jan. 11, 2013, but his work on making the world a better place should not die with him. Join us for two days of understanding his work and contributing to keep his memory and projects alive.
**Adam Kraft adam at media.mit.edu
vaccuum-powered page-turning arm for book scanner, built out of random parts that were laying around. NOT the Dany Q one, that one costs $1500 (and is awesome) but this one is under $100. It isn't actually scanning books yet so far, just turning pages. Interested in feedback on mechanism & software.
== RECAP ==
http://recapthelaw.org/
Ping demonstrates PACER, the US federal court's paywall for public-domain legal documents, and how it charges $0.10 per "page" for everything (including search results!). The RECAP browser extension uploads PACER results to the Internet Archive so that others will not have to pay the fees. If you are about to pay for a document which someone else has already uploaded, it allows you to retrieve it from archive.org instead. There are 854,711 items in the archive.org RECAP collection so far.
The RECAP browser extension for Firefox is at: http://github.com/citp/recap
The hackathon project was to develop RECAP for Chrome: http://github.com/zestyping/recap-chrome
Currently, RECAP for Chrome checks the Internet Archive to see which documents are available, and adds links to the page so you can get the documents for free instead of paying to download them from PACER. It doesn't upload documents to the Internet Archive yet, though -- that part still needs to be done.

If an item of discussion drags on too long, further discussion may be postponed until after the meeting ends.

During discussion, it is not necessary to write down exact what each person says. Record the topics of discussion, and any items of consensus or controversy here. Detailed descriptions of the conversation should go on the discuss page for this meeting.

* Hosting KinkForAll (relationship hacking un-conference) at Noisebridge on Sat. June 30th. (Alisa)
** Approximately 20 minute talks centered on sexuality, sexual health, and human interactions
** Intentionally no demos so as to be all ages
** Boring logistics: intends to use both classrooms, with about 40 attendees
** An attempt to bridge the hacker and alt-sex communities, thus the desire to host at NB.
** MCT is sponsoring
** Can we disallow storing all personal food from the kitchen?
** Pros:
*** Discourage habitation
*** Discourage GROSS NASTY ROTTEN FOOD (empirically, this happens)
** Cons:
*** People do legitimately store personal food in the kitchen

** Discussion:
*** Consensus or not, this should be formally decided
*** Tom
**** People have been keeping food here since the space first existed.
**** Documenting fridge policy is important for people who depend on Noisebridge for their ability to avoid hunger
**** Once people start taking food, one won't be able to feel safe about preparing food for yourself and others
*** Cynthia
**** Can we expand the scope to all food storage places? Murmurs: yes
*** Leif
**** This is a place where we shouldn't have explicit rules since rules lead to arbitrary enforcement, and arbitrary enforcement leads to confusion
**** We don't have enough space at NB for permanent personal food storage for everyone
**** This has worked informally well for a while
**** People should expect the loss of their food if they keep it at noisebridge
*** SuperQ
**** The consensus process of noisebridge is for the membership
**** Leif++. Everything at noisebridge outside of the member shelves is up for hacking, but don't be a dick.
**** Don't take food that's obviously for cooking for the day
*** Kelly
**** I'd like to mention that I'm really ticked off by the idea the people feel entitled to keep food here more than a few hours before a specific cooking project
**** Just because we don't choose to consense on a specific standard of behavior on the space doesn't mean we don't have an expected standard of excellence
**** If you are keeping food in the fridge for a project and it is eaten, that is un excellent and deserving of mediation
**** It is not excellent to keep personal supplies at noisebridge
**** Tom: Do you think it's okay to take
*** Question: What is food in the fridge? Answer: everything!
*** Rayc:
**** When I started coming to NB, the fridge was full of declicious tastebridge Kombucha
**** It sucks that we don't have that
**** I think the fair game policy is correct, especially given the large amount of grocery stores
*** Jumana
**** Maybe it would be good to have people write their name and date
**** Communication is good!
**** Kelly: If you have labelled something for a specific purpose, you are excellence
***
**** 8 months ago I was homeless. I kept eggs and made cookies for people
**** It was one of the few places I could make fresh food
**** I shared freely and tried to use as little space as possible
**** Food is a basic necessity. Bags on the day-shelf are left unhacked, what about food
**** Tom: I don't think NB is a place for medium-term food storage
*** Snail
**** We can't guarantee safety of the day-shelves; we don't permit people to keep their goods there
*** Kelly: While it is possible to use NB excellently for your day to day necessities, NB is not for support
*** Tom
**** Food in the fridge for an hour has been yoinked
**** That is unexcellent, and has lead to conflict
*** ??
**** Won't making NB fridges open access invite people to come in and shop
*** Kelly:
**** There has never been a policy on the fridge one way or the other
**** The signs existing are do-ocratic and can be changed
*** There are murmurs that the purviews of Excellence can keep this under control
*** Q: What happens when Tastebridge wants to make more Kombucha
**** A: Kombucha is awesome
*** Kelly:
**** We may have at one time consensed on the idea that everything at NB is up for hacking except for the membership consensus. Does anyone remember?
**** MCT: Agreed, and it is the informal consensus of NB that that is the case

** Kitchen electrical use
*** SuperQ wants to un-open the kitchen.
*** In order to do some experiments, the electrical hookup to the kitchen will be disabled
*** This is mostly the Stove, Oven, and Dishwasher, but NOT the fridges and hot water
*** We have no direct ability to measure the kitchen's energy uses
*** We can compare the no-kitchen week with the previous week(s) to find out
*** Interested people should check the Electricity Wiki
*** Kelly: Poke tastebridge@
*** SuperQ: I will conclude this before tastebridge next meets

== Lecture: Ayahuasca in a Global Context: Controversies, Public Debate, and Regulation ==

This presentation will address the internationalization of ayahuasca, a psychoactive substance made generally from the plants Banisteriopsis caapi and Psychotria viridis. Ayahuasca has traditionally been used in indigenous, mestizo shamanic, and religious rituals in South America. In the last 20 years, its use has spread beyond the Amazon to the world, and has been accompanied by great controversy. This presentation will analyze the public debate around the expansion of the use of this substance. It will contemplate the discussions in media and society around legalization, religious freedom, cultural diversity, and health risks. This analysis makes use of ethnographic fieldwork in the main new contexts of use of this substance, such as ayahuasca tourism in Peru, and the expansion of the Brazilian ayahuasca religions (Santo Daime and UDV) around the world.

== Book Release: The Internationalization of Ayahuasca ==

We're proud to be officially releasing The Internationalization of Ayahuasca, By Beatriz Caiuby Labate & Henrik Jungaberle (Eds.). This exclusive event will allow members an early chance to purchase this text, as well as a book signing.

Summary: The Internationalization of Ayahuasca is composed of 27 articles (almost 500 pages) and is divided in three parts: “Ayahuasca in South America and the world”, “About medi-cal, psychological and pharmacological Issues: is the use of ayahuasca safe?” and “The ex-pansion of the use of Ayahuasca and the establishment of a global debate on ethics and legalization”. The book brings together the work of scholars from different countries and academic disciplines to offer a comprehensive view of the globalization of this Amazonian brew. It presents a rich array of reflections on the complex implications of this expansion, ranging from health, spiritual and human rights impacts on individuals, to legal and policy impacts on governments. As ayahuasca drinking becomes an increasingly established practice beyond the Amazon in the early 21st century, Labate and Jungaberle have put together a collection that is an unprecedented contribution to a growing field of research. It is a must-read for people interested in the present and future of ayahuasca, as well as in spirituality, ethnobotany, social science theory, contemporary religious and ritual studies, therapeutic potentials of psychedelics, and international drug policy. (Kenneth W. Tupper, Ph.D.)

== Speaker ==
Beatriz Caiuby Labate has a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology from the Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Brazil. Her main areas of interest are the study of psychoactive substances, drug policies, shamanism, ritual, and religion. Since 2009, she has been a Research Associate at the Institute of Medical Psychology, Heidelberg University. She is also researcher with the Nucleus for Interdisciplinary Studies of Psychoactives (NEIP), and editor of its site (http://www.neip.info). She is author, co-author, and co-editor of eight books, two with English translations, and one journal special edition. Her book, “A Reinvenção do Uso da Ayahuasca nos Centros Urbanos” (“The Reinvention of Ayahuasca Use in Urban Centers,” Mercado de Letras, 2004), was derived from her Master's thesis, which received the prize for Best Master’s Thesis in Social Sciences from the National Association for Graduate Studies in Social Science (ANPOCS) in 2001.
Over the last several years, ayahuasca has become increasingly popular around the world. This exclusive free event is hosted by the Psychedelic Society of San Francisco out of Noisebridge. The speaker, Beatriz Caiuby Labate, is a renowned author, speaker, and researcher. She spoke at the MAPS Conference Ayahuasca Workshop last year, as well as a CIIS lecture earlier this year. We are lucky to have such an accomplished and amazing international researcher coming out to speak to our group! The event is free and refreshments will be served. Donations of any size are gladly accepted to help cover Bia's international travel expenses.

== Schedule ==
The event starts at 2pm on Sunday, March 4th, and will last about 2-hours.

* Refreshments will be served, followed by introductions
* Bia will present her lecture, Ayahuasca in a Global Context: Controversies, Public Debate, and Regulation
* Questions, socializing, and book signing

'''Ayahuasca in a Global Context: Controversies, Public Debate, and Regulation'''
