=Consensus 101: Introduction=

==What is Consensus==
Consensus is a non-violent way for people to relate to each other as a group. Successful use of a consensus process depends on people understanding the idea and wanting to use it.

Consensus allows us to recognize areas of agreement and act together without coercing one another (but see below ''*''). Under consensus, the group takes no action that is not consented to by all group members.

The fundamental right of consensus is for all persons to express themselves in their own words and of their own will; the fundamental responsibility of consensus is to assure others of their right to speak and be heard.

==Consensus vs Voting==
Voting is a means by which we choose one alternative from several. Consensus, on the other hand, is a process of synthesizing many diverse elements together. With consensus people can and should work through differences and reach a mutually satisfactory position. It is possible for one person's insights or strongly held beliefs to sway the whole group. No ideas are lost, each member's input is valued as part of the solution.

Consensus clearly takes more time than a simple vote. But the added time can be viewed in relation to the increased understanding each member of the group will have about the issue and the increased probability of the decision being implemented.

==What does Consensus Mean?==
Consensus does not mean that everyone thinks that the decision made is necessarily the best one possible, or even that they are sure it will work. What it does mean is that in coming to that decision, no one felt that her/his position on the matter was misunderstood or that it wasn't given a proper hearing. Hopefully, everyone will think this is the best decision (''*''and see the above note regarding steamrolling''*'').

==What is Required of Us==
* Cooperation: Look for areas of agreement and common ground, and build on them. Avoid right/wrong thinking.
* Respect: Respect others and trust them to make responsible input.
* Struggle: Use disagreements to learn, grow and change.Work hard to build unity in the group.
* Listen: Good listening is as important as good speaking. It is important not to withdraw when not speaking; good listening is active participation.
* Responsibility: Participants are responsible for voicing their opinions, participating in the discussion, and actively implementing the agreement.

==Use Cases==
Noisebridge is run by consensus with all the members. We don't do anything as a group that everyone isn't OK with (not everyone has to be wildly enthusiastic). We've evolved a way of getting to this state, which is not any kind of definitive rule, but has worked reasonably well so far. Here's what to expect in most cases, except when we get to consensus by a different method.

====The Short Version====
# Dick wants to paint the bike shed pink. He brings it up at a Tuesday meeting as a Discussion Item.
# Jane doesn't want the bike shed painted, Dick and Jane yell at each other for a while. People get annoyed and they ask Dick and Jane to discuss this after the meeting.
# Dick and Jane get together later and talk out their problems, they agree to paint the bike shed blue.
# Dick brings up painting the bike shed blue as a Consensus Item at the next Tuesday meeting.
# Everyone agrees this is a great idea. Consensus has been reached!

====The Long Version====
# Dick wants to paint the bike shed pink, others at Noisebridge say this is a great idea.
# Dick adds "Paint the bike shed pink" to Discussion Items for next week's Tuesday meeting.
# Dick shows up at the meeting and discusses his plan with everyone attending. Discussion is allowed to continue on for a week to give people time to read and respond to the meeting notes if they weren't at the meeting and want to be involved.
# Jane thinks this is a stupid idea, she doesn't think the bike shed should be painted at all.

=Consensus at Noisebridge=
This section represents the consensus of Noisebridge. Do not edit it. If you wish to make changes, bring them up for discussion and consensus at a weekly [[meeting]].

==Our Version of Consensus==
* Proposals for consensus should be raised for discussion in one [[meeting]], and then consensed upon at the following week's meeting.
** Both members and non-members may raise items for consensus.
** This allows people who can't attend every meeting time to read the notes and attend the following week's meeting.
** This also allows a week for people to discuss the consensus proposals between meetings.
* Only Noisebridge members in good standing may block consensus.
** In order to block consensus, a member must be physically present at a meeting.
** If a member is not physically present at the meeting, they may attempt to find another member in good standing who is willing to act as proxy on their behalf.
** If a member wishes to, they are free to proxy for the wishes of a guest who is not able block.

* The consensus process is decision-centric, and is re-configurable around any decision that needs to be made.
* The wording of the consensus proposal made in the first week can be altered during the consensus process of the second meeting, although radical changes in the sense or impact of a proposal require a resubmitted proposal, and a new two week process.
* If a member does not attend a meeting, they are asserting that they are comfortable with the decisions of those who do choose to attend, whether or not they agree.
* Members are free to express their opposition for a consensus proposal but stand aside without blocking it.

Whether it is the rising political power of technology companies, the fundamental reshaping of the city through construction, or the evolving stance of the region towards the federal government, understanding San Francisco and its surroundings is a key part of understanding the broader political environment we live in. In the midst of this, the region is lacking nimble, well-resourced journalistic efforts to expose the political mechanics going on below the surface of these changes, and bring detailed coverage to a broader audience.

In 2017, we are seeking to raise money to try a small experiment in community-supported journalism. San Francisco All City (SFAC) is envisioned as a muckraking publisher focused on the intricacies of Bay Area politics, a book club with its own dedicated investigative journalism unit, and a force for increased transparency and reform in local government, all wrapped into one.

Noisebridge will act as a fiscal sponsor for SFAC, directed by John Shutt, for a six month trial period starting in February 2017. SFAC plans to raise $54,000 and donate $2,500 for fiscal sponsorship. SFAC will donate 5% of any additional money raised to Noisebridge's general fund. SFAC may seek consensus to renew fiscal sponsorship at the end of the six month trial if things go well.

SFAC plans to purchase film and audio recording equipment and hardware for video editing, and may seek a separate consensus proposal for a matching grant from the equipment fund, in which case the equipment would live at Noisebridge and be available for general use by the community.

Noisebridge is a space for sharing, creation, collaboration, research, development, mentoring, and of course, learning. Noisebridge is also more than a physical space; it's a community with roots extending around the world.

== The Idea ==

Noisebridge is an educational non-profit corporation, 501(c)3 public charity status.

We provide infrastructure and collaboration opportunities for people interested in programming, hardware hacking, physics, chemistry, mathematics, security, robotics, all kinds of art, and, of course, technology. Through talks, workshops, and [[projects]] we encourage knowledge exchange, learning, and mentoring.

As a space for artistic collaboration and experimentation, we are open to most types of art - with a special emphasis on the crossover of art and technology. From hardware labs to electronics and sound labs, most things that're creative are most definitely welcome.

Many interesting things happen in the space. We've found that sharing is essential to making this work. We strive to begin from a point of respect and trust. We believe it builds a safe community and that this best fosters innovation and creation.
Our motto is "Be excellent to each other." We also have writings on [[community standards]] and an [[anti-harassment policy]] which covers all conduct in the physical space and in our online spaces.

Leadership is taken by individual members for specific projects. We call this "sudo leadership" after the *nix command ''sudo'' which allows a regular user to do one root-level, or superuser, task. In other words, if you want Noisebridge to do something, start doing it.

Here's some paraphrasing from our bylaws:
Through talks, classes, workshops, collaborative projects, and other activities, we want to encourage research, knowledge exchange, learning, and mentoring in a safe, clean space. We provide educational spaces for teaching practical skills and theory of technology, science, and art. We provide work space, storage, and other resources for projects related to art, science, and technology that will benefit the individual members' personal growth in their fields of interest, encouraging the individual members to share their projects and knowledge for the betterment of society through art, science and technology. We create, learn, and teach, individually and as a group, inviting members of the community in the San Francisco Bay area and the world. We develop, support the development of, and provide resources for the development of free and open source software and hardware for the benefit of society. We promote collaboration across disciplines for the benefit of cultural, charitable, and scientific causes.

We self-finance through membership fees ($80 per member/month with $40 "starving hacker" rate), beverage sales, and parties, the way European hacker spaces do it. We also welcome one-time or recurring [[Donate_or_Pay_Dues|donations]] from members and non-members alike. Donations and sponsorships will accompany renovation and equipment purchase. Within the first 24 hours of renting a space, we raised over $10,000 for a cool location and meaningful projects. Noisebridge has been a staple of the San Francisco hacker and technology and art scene for 10 years. We are a hackerspace where everyone is always welcome, where everything is free, with supportive community where anyone can come and explore and learn and make cool things.

Due to a series of anonymous complaints to the city planning and building inspection departments at the city (we believe with the intent of shutting down Noisebridge), '''our landlord has decided not to renew our lease''', which ends August 2018.

Since Noisebridge first moved into 2169 Mission St., rents have risen considerably in San Francisco. Leases for comparable spaces are anywhere from '''300-500%''' more than Noisebridge is currently paying, which well exceed Noisebridge's current funding sources.

We don't know where Noisebridge will end up, but '''our community is committed to providing a home for hacking and making in San Francisco.''' We believe that San Francisco needs a hackerspace that is open to as many people as possible as often as possible. We also strongly believe that the residents and guests of our town deserve a space to pursue their hopes, interests, and ambitions at their own pace in a safe space where lack of funds is no barrier to entry. This is what Noisebridge provides, and has provided for nearly a decade.

== Background on Noisebridge ==

Noisebridge is a [http://hackerspaces.org/ hackerspace] for technical-creative projects, [[Do-ocracy|doocratically]] run by everyone. We are [[Incorporation|a non-profit educational institution]] intended for public benefit. We have a 5,200 square-foot space located in the heart of San Francisco containing an electronics lab, wood shop, machine/metalworking shop, sewing/crafting supplies, two classrooms, music making areas, conference area, and library.

We provide infrastructure and collaboration opportunities for anyone interested in programming, hardware, crafts, science, robotics, art, and technology. We teach, we learn, we share. With no leaders, we have one rule: "Be excellent to each other".

Noisebridge was one of the first hackerspaces in the US, along with Hacktory, Hack DC, and NYC Resistor, which all started in 2007, inspired by hackerspaces in Europe, like the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metalab Metalab] in Vienna and [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C-base c-base] in Berlin.

Noisebridge is as open as possible. Typical "open hours" are from 11:00am-10:00pm, however this varies greatly depending on scheduled events and who is using the space on any given day. New visitors are welcome any time (all ages, all skill levels), as long as someone is in the space and able to answer the door.

Hi, I'm a Site Reliability Engineer at Pinterest by day and a manufacturing nerd at night. My goal is to learn how to work with both software and hardware at scale, because I think these skills will empower me to make the biggest positive impact. I do lots of sewing and laser cutting projects at Noisebridge, including a DIY iMac and my [https://leavemealonesweater.com/ Leave Me Alone Sweater], which went viral and made me some money via Betabrand. To me, Noisebridge is a supportive community where people are super generous with their time and knowledge, and people in the space have encouraged me to branch out and learn more about electronics hardware and shop tools. I've also met many people in the space which lead to collaborations (some of them paid!).

I love documenting and sharing my experiences and learnings related to DIY projects or manufacturing. This has lead to unexpected successes such as the Leave Me Alone Sweater, which I initially posted on Instructables, as well as a writing gig with Supplyframe Hardware about manufacturing, after writing about the annual Noisebridge China hacker trip ([[NoisebridgeChinaTrip7]]). I'm a web engineer and investigative journalist, and can barely begin to describe how important Noisebridge has been to my life in San Francisco. It's been a place to learn to code, a place to meet lifelong friends and collaborators, and a place to have my mind blown by new technologies, artforms, and ideas in the innovation capital of the world. And unlike almost every place in San Francisco, Noisebridge is open to everyone without a need to pay! That matters a lot when you've just moved to the city after college and trying to find your way, or if you're trying to make things work as a freelancer.

Over the past few years I've volunteered as a board member, treasurer, and errand-runner for Noisebridge, because I believe it should continue to be accessible to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay. I'm proud to say that we've never been stronger as a community, and that our bank balance has been growing every month over the past year! That's hard to accomplish in a city as expensive in San Francisco without demanding payment to be a part of our community. We thrive because of hundreds of small donors who love this place. I'm thrilled to see what comes next, and I know we can face any challenges thrown in our path.

I'm a software developer working on artificial intelligence, formal methods for programming languages, and blockchain infrastructure. I also teach Haskell and laser cutter safety at Noisebridge.

On the whole, Noisebridge is an amazing community of people working on interesting things, and is a completely unique place to be. I've never encountered anything like it before. But for me it's also quite a bit more. Noisebridge provided me with the space and community necessary for me to reflect on my gender and come to terms with being trans.

Noisebridge has a prolific sewing area, including a giant cutting mat, an industrial straight stitch machine and serger, and a few home sewing machines. Sewing is not as hard as some people think! I've been able to teach people with no experience basic sewing in an afternoon at Noisebridge. The sewing area has given me the opportunity to make projects such as my [http://www.instructables.com/id/Egg-Rug/ Egg Rug] and [http://www.instructables.com/id/Notebook-Cover-With-Zip-Pouch/ Notebook Cover with Zip Pouch], but the most successful project I've made by far is the [https://leavemealonesweater.com/ Leave Me Alone Sweater]. It's a cowl neck sweater that can roll up over your head and be zipped close, for its Leave Me Alone mode. After I posted this sweater on Instructables, it went unexpectedly viral. Many publications picked it up, and it even aired on TV, on [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RacM3hPJ5us Live With Kelly]. I did one run of sweaters with Betabrand, and now I'm setting out to learn about apparel manufacturing and produce them myself.
