Ben Kovitz: update

Former San Franciscan, working now (December 2025) on becoming a San Franciscan again. Been coming to Noisebridge an average of about two or three times a year since 2009. Software developer, got a Ph.D. in cognitive science and computer science under Douglas Hofstadter in 2023. Now returning to my roots in good ol' software engineering—Python, C++, embedded, backend, AI, whoever hires me first.

* INFRA WG GUILD: Kubernetes Cluster is up and wants simple jobs running on it. It could track purchasing needs lik snacks and drinks and supplies.
* RUBBER DUCKY GUILD: You find a little duck to talk to about your problem and it helps you stand in for someone to talk to and figure a thing out! Someone can volunteer to be a live person to do it even better than a toy duck can. Made to be a real fake example guild but they have been writing their own duck meeting notes. Duck guild can promote restorative communication with their light hearted examples of good behavior.

If newbies come in we can direct them to the affiliation group and the people who know about the thing for them to meet and join. Guilds idea came from gaming world.

What are they? Is anyone trying to become a Member or Associate Member? If not move on. No long discussions.
Daniel: There's no price gate; you show up. In some sense everyone at NB is a member but there's trust levels like opening the space 24/7 is called Associate Member and you get access card and if you're the last one here closing you sweep nonmembers out.

* Loren: Our bylaws use the term "member" as the trusted level. We will have to update the bylaws.
* David: What is the business structure that controls the org?
* Nthmost: 501c3 has a board and membership to elect the board. We assign as little power and as much responsibility to the board. We want as much power in the membership and not the board to prevent takeovers. Would the different member types be interchangeable in the bylaws?

* Loren: We don't have one we begrudgingly have secretary and treasurer.

LX: the two danger zones that can happen are: board takes over (this has destroyed other hackerspaces), and corrosion of culture until the original spirit gets trampled. Main prevention is whoever elects the board and whoever nominates or sponsors new opeple -- these are keepers of the culture -- if we make all of those people consensus participants we end up with potential disasters. If 51% have the power to vote in something new, they can undo everything--and then we're HackerDojo.
* Loren: Big M members select board by bylaws. We extended voting to associate members. We might want to write this into our bylaws. Membership could reflect this.
* Nthmost: Interesting to see NB adapt to different times. Feels natural. Policy member is clearer for Big M than steward since access members also steward.
* Daniel: It's a little bit too hierarchical to have "Big M", but that's tongue-in-cheek. You're already at 99% by walking in and its just a matter of taking on some "burdens" by getting more involved.
* Loren: You don't have to be a policy member. I don't like ladder hierarchy. Coming in getting involved in guilds and projects around the space. Not defense industry coding intended but challenge coins for example. We want people to participate in a way that feels good to them.

* Nthmost: It's possible that we'll figure out a way to separate levels from membership types.
* Trevor: You were talking about different activities people had to do to get to Big M? I think that's fun I wanted to add on to that.
* Loren: We want people to come into space and for membership to be a thing that happens through guilds perhaps not sure if thats a direction it needs to go. Both sewing and others have worked on access control solutions. We have worked out ways for that to be as good as the front door access is.
* Trevor: That could be cool if different types of challenges and levels could exist for fun. Not mandatory to use the different rooms and guilds.

* LX: I think the idea of each guild as its own culture, with its own merit badges and that kind of thing--there's a place for that. But the idea of membership is as general as possible.

* Alex: I like the idea of making your own badge. As a way of learning things and creating a record of accomplishment. Laser engraved things and the like and specifics can be individual to the person.
* Trevor: When people come in we could have some gamification of things possible here like badges here and a course like woodworking badge electronics badge etc.
* Loren: It sounds like we have rough consensus and we could separate ideas for membership as discussion items.

* Daniel: We're not changing anything that's required for Associate Member. You get a walkthrough of the space. Julius brought up Noisebridge merit badges a couple months ago, and I think it's cool, but it requires work from a lot of people.
* Chris: It's expected that if you've been a member for a long time, people can come to you for information.
* LX: In software, the word "maintainer" often means the people who know about stuff and you can ask them. We'll probably have multiple names for these things.

Since then, we have: Secured event insurance for the night Contracted two harm-reduction staff who will be present to monitor activity and help keep things safe and calm outside the space, as requested Refined the event plan to ensure it aligns with Noisebridge’s safety and community expectations With these updates in place, we’d like to move forward and request a vote tonight to approve the January 3rd event. Happy to answer any questions or make clarifications as needed. Thank you. An update was provided regarding the proposed January 3 Laser Light Show, addressing concerns raised at the previous meeting.

* Trevor: I couldn't find a good video of CBase but there was a 360 camera tour of it that was inspiring. I thought I wish our space was like this. Set building in a way. It's a hackerspace in Berlin that's one of the most famous cool spaces themed like a space ship or station inside. It has walls with metal designs and LEDs and cool shit everywhere and tech stuff. Archways and nice lounge areas retro cool scifi.
* Fineline: cbase was def an inspiration for Noisebridge.(also they just banned smoking in the upper more public area, which is nice for various ppl.)
* Nthmost: Been, if you go to Berlin you should go check it out. The reason they can have nice things is because a lot of things is locked behind a door. That's not really the way we do things here isn't as locked but habits we need to have as a community to clear shelves and not cover things with crap.
* Trevor: My second idea is to have a space that's nice clean and scifi and that means getting rid of some junk. We could get some experts together who know what stuff is to go through stuff.
* Loren: In practice the way we get stuff out of the space is we find better uses like finding events and parties and do cleanups for those and it makes the space cleaner afterwards. I would encourage you to volunteer to coordinate instead of "Someone should".

*LX: I've long that we have so many cool things that are sprawling out in every direction. We could get a large quantity of sizable boxes and shelves. If you find a table with a whole bunch of stuff on it, that should not happen. The stuff should go into boxes with a self-destruct data.

* LX: What do you tag the stuff when it's a mess? We get a whole lot of trays, and everything goes in one.
* Erik: We had a limbo-land. Some people had a big project, taking up a lot of space, and it got moved to limbo-land--that got their attention.
* Naomi: Direct reponses to you both: There is so much executive function energy drain in making decisions about tings. I made decision to clear stuff out upstairs and a 5x5' cube takes all night to figure out who is using a thing for something. We should get rid of a whole bunch of crap. There's always going to be more crap. We don't need to save it. We don't have a shortage of stuff. There's always going to be more stuff.
There's going to be a few gems once in a while but we will see something again it will be fine. One way is to have positive reason to use that section and that thing becomes more valuable than accumulating jnk. We should organize jnk? That sucks. Dump it in limbolandia. Having a fun aesthetic purpose for things, becomes motive to get rid of stuff.

* Nthmost: 501c3 has a board and membership to elect the board. We assign as little power and as much responsibility to the board. We want as much power in the membership and not the board to prevent takeovers. Would the different member types be interchangeable in the bylaws?

LX: the two danger zones that can happen are: board takes over (this has destroyed other hackerspaces), and corrosion of culture until the original spirit gets trampled. Main prevention is whoever elects the board and whoever nominates or sponsors new opeple -- these are keepers of the culture -- if we make all of those people consensus participants we end up with potential disasters. If 51% have the power to vote in something new, they can undo everything--and then we're HackerDojo.
* Loren: Big M members select board by bylaws. We extended voting to associate members. We might want to write this into our bylaws. Membership could reflect this.
* Nthmost: Interesting to see NB adapt to different times. Feels natural. Policy member is clearer for Big M than steward since access members also steward.
* Daniel: It's a little bit too hierarchical to have "Big M", but that's tongue-in-cheek. You're already at 99% by walking in and its just a matter of taking on some "burdens" by getting more involved.
* Loren: You don't have to be a policy member. I don't like ladder hierarchy. Coming in getting involved in guilds and projects around the space. Not defense industry coding intended but challenge coins for example. We want people to participate in a way that feels good to them.

* Trevor: I couldn't find a good video of CBase but there was a 360 camera tour of it that was inspiring. I thought I wish our space was like this. Set building in a way. It's a hackerspace in Berlin that's one of the most famous cool spaces themed like a space ship or station inside. It has walls with metal designs and LEDs and cool shit everywhere and tech stuff. Archways and nice lounge areas retro cool scifi.
* Fineline: cbase was def an inspiration for Noisebridge.(also they just banned smoking in the upper more public area, which is nice for various ppl.)
* Nthmost: Been, if you go to Berlin you should go check it out. The reason they can have nice things is because a lot of things is locked behind a door. That's not really the way we do things here isn't as locked but habits we need to have as a community to clear shelves and not cover things with crap.

We have a moderator who has keeps a "stack" the moderator notices when people want to speak and will make sure everyone is heard. There are special rules from a tradition of anarchist organization. This comes from groups like Occupy who hold giant group conversations. If you have a direct responce to something then use the hand signal which looks like finger guns. Please be judisios in stack, we are trying to calm down and be productive and stick to the stack. The moderator is doing their best and let the moderator know if they aren't seeing someone.

There is a big event this weekend. events all weekend. NB16, 10MOF by Daniel web. is anyone can teach a class then we will have people do it on Saturday on Classathon. We have a spreadsheet for volenteers for the entire weekend.
Elle: Storngly encourage people who are doing classes to announce their classes on meetup and people will be looking for the class and they will hear about NB16 at the class as well.

Nthmost: many years ago there was a page fractal working groupl. We used to have working groups. The fractal working group had a limitation. It didn't have long term vision. it disappated. the guild overlay it had a level of mastery and levels to it. If you wanted to findsomeone in a skil you could go to the guild and find those people. Volenteer labor can be organized to create more cohesion across time and burnout sessions and give recognision. distict areas of interest. Sewing, Robitics, Infra, Space, Music, Electronics, are all guild. Sewing guild came together that they were put a keycode on it. this is an example of autonomy. If you think of noisebridge as fractal, then the guilds are the major branches.
LX: your buss number if you disappeared, if you disappeared would things still happen. if you disappeared and things wouldn't work then we would break down and the bus number is 0. we can't have things die with one person. the idea of a guild is that you need to find a group of people that you can share skills so that if someone disappears then we can tag team and keep the knollage going . game bridge has alwways had one instructor at least.
Nthmost: you can define your own interior structure to recognize people for having specific skills -- this becomes a DIRECTORY to help NB.
Elan: there was talk about making a AV guild then if we start purchasing expensive equipment we might have a locker.
LX: we have alot of VR lockers that could be used
Elle: sewing guild, something that guilds are not is a dititorial setup. it is not a thing were people who are more active have more power over others. speaking for sewing, sewing has more ryles than other guild because it has more needs for specificity. food eating in the sewing room can ruin projects so the guild bans it from their room. Coffee spill has messed up clothes, machines, tables, floor. some of the things in sewing might not make sense outisde of sewing but makes sense within the guild. sewing scissors, if you use them for paper then you can hurt the wrists of the people who use the scissors. fabric an be ruined and fabric is exprensive. Effotrs within the guild. anyone within the guild can teach and you can have skill shares to speread skills. consider joining guild even if youre just interested!

Loren: We get payments out from GoFundMe on a monthly basis via Paypal. The number right now is $21,000 raised directly by GoFundMe.

Loren: The third thing I want to do is clarify our fundraising plans going forward. Through the end of this year, we should focus on donations. In the new year, we can move our focus towards growing our membership, running more classes, and other things that bring in more participants. If we were to do really well with our fundraising drive, like double it again, then we may not need to focus so much on growing membership.

Elle: the GoFundMe is great, but it's slowing down. We have to keep circulating it for it to continue to grow. The party doesn't have any fundraising attached except for the silent auction.

Jamison: I think it would be good for the board to commit to a number of days of cash on hand. Six months of expenses is typical in startup land. Under that you are considered default-dead.

Loren: spent some time today doing ID verification. The app timed out for half an hour or more. Gather 1–2 people to meet with OkZack to draft a one-page proposal for new-teacher outreach. We have equipment that takes up significant space, but lacks active teachers or guilds, and there’s little coordination around it. We need skilled people who can take ownership and teach classes—this supports our mission, increases membership, and brings in funding.
Julius: What kind of relationship would teachers have with Noisebridge?
The relationship is open to negotiation. Since we have almost no CNC/welding/etc classes for 1–2 years, let's be open to discussing class donation $ revenue sharing arrangements. Avoid knee-jerk reactions to sharing—opening the door to outside teachers can diversify our teaching community. There are many skilled, motivated people in the Bay Area who could contribute, and this helps reconnect us to local startup culture. If teachers want to share $ from classes we otherwise wouldn’t have, we should at least consider it—otherwise we’re leaving money on the table.

Yuki: Reaching out to varius people intereseted in running events here. one of the people is interested in hosting youth centered education event. robotics programming and other stuff like that . DEVOXX4kids (https://www.devoxx4kids.org/). this person has a lot of expertise in this event and other countries in 40 countries and they always sell out. they could organise coporate funding so they don't cost anything for us and we could still take donations.

Jet: That sounds like one of the most perfect opportunities I have heard for noisebridge in a while. That absolutely needs to happen. When you say youth, what does that mean?
Yuki: It's for teenagers specifically.

Loren: I don't know that people. I would like to check whether our insurance shares that opinion. When it comes down to brass tacks, broader society may not take our side on that. As far as general involvement, in some ways it feels like it furthers the presendent and might make us open to taking on risks
Julius: nothing to do with the capability of the kids. the kids who have made there way here on htier own are able to take care of themselves. therer are kids who come nad have been worrying others with the use of the woodshop and such. 13-14 year olds. especially when no other poepple in the space it's worrying.
Loren: we might not espouse a pro kids policy. when people show up as excellent then we might have concerns if they are of age and if they are being excellent then it hasn't been a concern.
Jess: I want to say, if we can be the kind of community where we can trust kids and find a way to keep them safe, then this is not something we should turn away from just on the basis that we are a certain kind of community. We should not give someone under 18 door access so they can be there by themselves. Also, maybe this is the time to ask: do we have business insurance or similar?
Loren: we do have directors and officors insurance. when the policy asks us how many people come to classes and events throughout the year. we have insurance for general education and low risk general use.

Elle: had to ask a kid to leave noisebridge a year and afew months ago. the kids and the mother split and started using the laser cutter with someone who was then 86ed and then interuped a knife class thene threw a tantrum in the hallway. had to be asked to leave. Fears that if we have a program that we are earning money from then we have these on the fence issues around safety it plays badly for us. Nthmost: what events and what dates?
Chris: January 3rd and 24th. They are two different events. laser things one if a area 51 types of events. other is Saphic fantasy event. one is a laser show that's area 51 themed. the other is hosted by another person and she will come in and present about what the event is about. has made a loose forumn about how the event goes. the events has gotten insurrance and 500 dollars down for noisebridge for use of the space and can help the space. 2 event in a month is a 1000 dollars.

Jet: what is the pricing for these events like? I hosted the open source afterparty. Obviously this was a noisebridge event, but we wanted to make sure peopel could attend affordably.

Chris: We had a no-flop-at-the-door. If you have 100 people and you're asking for 10 dollars, how much money is that? But then you have security, and talent, and props. Usually you...actually last party ended up costing money out of pocket. That's why I think 500 dollars is pretty modest.

Elle: we're listed as a workshop and social evetns are a side thing we do. aren't we listed as a workshop? pointing out if we start doing too many parties it could make problems later on.

Loren: our zoning and understandin with the city is that we were able to get out of 30k zoning fee as an online community that rents a shared workshop. not a late night social events space. it keeps us in good graces with the city to be in this status.

Someone can volunteer to be a live person to do it even better than a toy duck can. Made to be a real fake example guild but they have been writing their own duck meeting notes. Duck guild can promote restorative communication with their light hearted examples of good behavior.

If newbies come in we can direct them to the affiliation group and the people who know about the thing for them to meet and join. Guilds idea came from gaming world.

LX: the two danger zones that can happen are: board takes over (this has destroyed other hackerspaces), and corrosion of culture until the original spirit gets trampled. Main prevention is whoever elects the board and whoever nominates or sponsors new opeple -- these are keepers of the culture -- if we make all of those people consensus participants we end up with potential disasters. If 51% have the power to vote in something new, they can undo everything--and then we're HackerDojo.
* Loren: Big M members select board by bylaws. We extended voting to associate members. We might want to write this into our bylaws. Membership could reflect this.

* Trevor: I couldn't find a good video of CBase but there was a 360 camera tour of it that was inspiring. I thought I wish our space was like this. Set building in a way. It's a hackerspace in Berlin that's one of the most famous cool spaces themed like a space ship or station inside. It has walls with metal designs and LEDs and cool shit everywhere and tech stuff. Archways and nice lounge areas retro cool scifi.

* Nthmost: Been, if you go to Berlin you should go check it out. The reason they can have nice things is because a lot of things is locked behind a door. That's not really the way we do things here isn't as locked but habits we need to have as a community to clear shelves and not cover things with crap.
* Trevor: My second idea is to have a space that's nice clean and scifi and that means getting rid of some junk. We could get some experts together who know what stuff is to go through stuff.
* Loren: In practice the way we get stuff out of the space is we find better uses like finding events and parties and do cleanups for those and it makes the space cleaner afterwards. I would encourage you to volunteer to coordinate instead of "Someone should".

*LX: I've long that we have so many cool things that are sprawling out in every direction. We could get a large quantity of sizable boxes and shelves. If you find a table with a whole bunch of stuff on it, that should not happen. The stuff should go into boxes with a self-destruct data.

There's going to be a few gems once in a while but we will see something again it will be fine. We have a moderator who has keeps a "stack" the moderator notices when people want to speak and will make sure everyone is heard. There are special rules from a tradition of anarchist organization. This comes from groups like Occupy who hold giant group conversations. If you have a direct responce to something then use the hand signal which looks like finger guns. Please be judisios in stack, we are trying to calm down and be productive and stick to the stack. The moderator is doing their best and let the moderator know if they aren't seeing someone.

There is a big event this weekend. events all weekend. NB16, 10MOF by Daniel web. is anyone can teach a class then we will have people do it on Saturday on Classathon. We have a spreadsheet for volenteers for the entire weekend.
Elle: Storngly encourage people who are doing classes to announce their classes on meetup and people will be looking for the class and they will hear about NB16 at the class as well.

Nthmost: many years ago there was a page fractal working groupl. We used to have working groups. The fractal working group had a limitation. It didn't have long term vision. it disappated. the guild overlay it had a level of mastery and levels to it. If you wanted to findsomeone in a skil you could go to the guild and find those people. Volenteer labor can be organized to create more cohesion across time and burnout sessions and give recognision. distict areas of interest. Sewing, Robitics, Infra, Space, Music, Electronics, are all guild. Sewing guild came together that they were put a keycode on it. this is an example of autonomy. If you think of noisebridge as fractal, then the guilds are the major branches.
LX: your buss number if you disappeared, if you disappeared would things still happen. if you disappeared and things wouldn't work then we would break down and the bus number is 0. we can't have things die with one person. the idea of a guild is that you need to find a group of people that you can share skills so that if someone disappears then we can tag team and keep the knollage going . game bridge has alwways had one instructor at least.
Nthmost: you can define your own interior structure to recognize people for having specific skills -- this becomes a DIRECTORY to help NB.
Elan: there was talk about making a AV guild then if we start purchasing expensive equipment we might have a locker.

Elle: sewing guild, something that guilds are not is a dititorial setup. it is not a thing were people who are more active have more power over others. speaking for sewing, sewing has more ryles than other guild because it has more needs for specificity. food eating in the sewing room can ruin projects so the guild bans it from their room. Coffee spill has messed up clothes, machines, tables, floor. some of the things in sewing might not make sense outisde of sewing but makes sense within the guild. sewing scissors, if you use them for paper then you can hurt the wrists of the people who use the scissors. fabric an be ruined and fabric is exprensive. Effotrs within the guild. anyone within the guild can teach and you can have skill shares to speread skills. consider joining guild even if youre just interested!

Loren: The third thing I want to do is clarify our fundraising plans going forward. Through the end of this year, we should focus on donations. In the new year, we can move our focus towards growing our membership, running more classes, and other things that bring in more participants. Loren: spent some time today doing ID verification. The app timed out for half an hour or more. Gather 1–2 people to meet with OkZack to draft a one-page proposal for new-teacher outreach. We have equipment that takes up significant space, but lacks active teachers or guilds, and there’s little coordination around it. We need skilled people who can take ownership and teach classes—this supports our mission, increases membership, and brings in funding.
Julius: What kind of relationship would teachers have with Noisebridge?
The relationship is open to negotiation. Since we have almost no CNC/welding/etc classes for 1–2 years, let's be open to discussing class donation $ revenue sharing arrangements. Avoid knee-jerk reactions to sharing—opening the door to outside teachers can diversify our teaching community. There are many skilled, motivated people in the Bay Area who could contribute, and this helps reconnect us to local startup culture. If teachers want to share $ from classes we otherwise wouldn’t have, we should at least consider it—otherwise we’re leaving money on the table.

The immediate step is simply creating the document and posting teacher outreach on Craigslist and other platforms.

Yuki: Reaching out to varius people intereseted in running events here. one of the people is interested in hosting youth centered education event. robotics programming and other stuff like that . DEVOXX4kids (https://www.devoxx4kids.org/). this person has a lot of expertise in this event and other countries in 40 countries and they always sell out. they could organise coporate funding so they don't cost anything for us and we could still take donations.

Jet: That sounds like one of the most perfect opportunities I have heard for noisebridge in a while. That absolutely needs to happen. When you say youth, what does that mean?
Yuki: It's for teenagers specifically.
Nth: Do we have the ability to be a financial sponsor?
Loren: Meaing re-granting?
Loren: doesn't want to set the precedent to doing this.

Jullius: feels torn at these kinds of events but is questioning about if we want to encourage kids to come to the space. we have a unquie safety risk here. we have dangerous things here. worried we can't have kids here because of the kids here. Doesn't like the presedent
Elan: Note. one of the grants we did this once where we got a grant earmarked for rent. this is not to be regranted for anything but rent. so the money could be fungible but we might want to look at the other grants we've gotten
Nthmost: disagrees and thinks we should allow kids here. Kids in SF don't get enough credit and we have enough precedent for having kids here. Waivers don't help all that much.

Loren: I don't know that people. I would like to check whether our insurance shares that opinion. When it comes down to brass tacks, broader society may not take our side on that. As far as general involvement, in some ways it feels like it furthers the presendent and might make us open to taking on risks
Julius: nothing to do with the capability of the kids. the kids who have made there way here on htier own are able to take care of themselves. therer are kids who come nad have been worrying others with the use of the woodshop and such. 13-14 year olds. especially when no other poepple in the space it's worrying.
Loren: we might not espouse a pro kids policy. when people show up as excellent then we might have concerns if they are of age and if they are being excellent then it hasn't been a concern.
Jess: I want to say, if we can be the kind of community where we can trust kids and find a way to keep them safe, then this is not something we should turn away from just on the basis that we are a certain kind of community. We should not give someone under 18 door access so they can be there by themselves. Also, maybe this is the time to ask: do we have business insurance or similar?
Loren: we do have directors and officors insurance. when the policy asks us how many people come to classes and events throughout the year. we have insurance for general education and low risk general use.
LX: posted in chat an existing policy we have around kids.(https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Kids) TLDR parents should be attending their kids because of the safety issue. people in the past have dropped off their kids and gone to lunch. kids who have been here unattended have stolen -GPUS and are more than capable but are maybe more dangerous to us than we are to them. this policy is to protect kids and Noisebridge.
Elle: had to ask a kid to leave noisebridge a year and afew months ago. the kids and the mother split and started using the laser cutter with someone who was then 86ed and then interuped a knife class thene threw a tantrum in the hallway. had to be asked to leave. Fears that if we have a program that we are earning money from then we have these on the fence issues around safety it plays badly for us. If it was a feww thing then it could be ok. but if we are earning money then it makes it worse then we might be taking advantage of hte children coming

Nthmost: what events and what dates?
Chris: January 3rd and 24th. They are two different events. laser things one if a area 51 types of events. other is Saphic fantasy event. one is a laser show that's area 51 themed. the other is hosted by another person and she will come in and present about what the event is about. has made a loose forumn about how the event goes. the events has gotten insurrance and 500 dollars down for noisebridge for use of the space and can help the space. 2 event in a month is a 1000 dollars.

Jet: Generally quiet. Not usually any strangers.

Wheezy: not busy but lots of new people. coffee breidge and weekday workers come in after work week.

Elle: most things are not here that late so that could be fine.

Chris: not sure what you got for the last. We were talking about $500 flat for this one.

Jet: what is the pricing for these events like? I hosted the open source afterparty. Obviously this was a noisebridge event, but we wanted to make sure peopel could attend affordably.

Chris: We had a no-flop-at-the-door. If you have 100 people and you're asking for 10 dollars, how much money is that? But then you have security, and talent, and props. Usually you...actually last party ended up costing money out of pocket. That's why I think 500 dollars is pretty modest.

Elle: we're listed as a workshop and social evetns are a side thing we do. aren't we listed as a workshop? pointing out if we start doing too many parties it could make problems later on.

Loren: our zoning and understandin with the city is that we were able to get out of 30k zoning fee as an online community that rents a shared workshop. not a late night social events space. it keeps us in good graces with the city to be in this status.

Restrictions on using @everyone tag in Discord, expectations on opt out

* IRISH: I work in infosec, deal w/ spam etc. the expectation is opt in, not opt out. the majority of them have restricted who can use the @everyone tag to tag everybody. this morning there was a CONCERN but not everyone in the NB discord needde to be notified about this. there should have been an approach where individuals who are maybe members or helping run the space on an active basis should have been notified about this, not @everyone. there's that aspect of being respectful to each other. randomly messaging everyone is not helpful esp. in the middle of a workday. "You can just opt out" is not helpful and not respectful.

* Elle: joining a community is in a sense opting in. this isn't a public channel, this is a NB channel. this issue was important. it wasn't clear to the person posting or reading it who would have the relevant info. for all we knew, YOU would have that info. i don't know you but i didn't know who might know. In a community like ours, when an issue is kinda big, everyone's gonna hear about it. The couple minutes you spent reading something you didn't want to read, but you did opt in to NB.

* IRISH: i did not opt in to getting @everyone alerts, and if that's the position NB has, i'm going to LEAVE and TELL EVERYONE you guys suck.

* Elle: lots of members don't go on the discord, you can keep being a member and not be on Discord.

Not trying to change anything structurally. Mostly just aesthetic. Someone will come along and say "I want to be a member." And some folks will say "by coming in the door you're a member". But then we explain about philanthropy/big M etc and they're confused and not interested anymore.

The main issue is we have this associate member position that feels like it's when you're "really" a member.

The main distinction is about 24 hour access. And obviously it makes sense to delay that for a while. Maybe call that something like "you are becoming a trusted member" or "getting key access"

There's a similar issue with BIG M. It's not very anarchistic. We shouldn't name it that way. Two words I propose are either Steward or Clerk.

Summary of changes: associate member has no special title. Just call it getting 24 hour access. Big M can be called something less cool.

Julius - small little guy instead of big-M,

Wheezy - Words do matter. We should be careful about words. It's not like the terms Big M and Philathropist/Associate are causing confusion about who should be doing what/who should be here, but I have seen people in the last few years who want to become Big M just because they want more power and influence in the space. Every few years we get a few new ones. The tour is people's first impression of the space. Very important. Then we get people who say "I want to donate, how do I do that?" Once we get people in the space and have them feeling empowered to do things *without* being a member and just donate, that's the ideal.
I'm saying this just to bring this back to what this change looks like. It sounds like renaming things on the wiki, get people to start using it in the community.

Wheezy - Common for people to ask "so who is in charge around here?" If it hadn't been the case that certain people here had beeen super hierarchal in the past, it wouldn't bug me so much. But we need to make clear that we lead by example, everybody is a leader.

Josh - I like names like Petty Tyrant Wannabe. But what if we go for simplicity and make it descriptive. You're a member who is trusted. You're a member who handles finances.

SigInt - Couple points. I want to challenge base assumption is that we don't want people to desire to be a member. I think from a practical perspective we want people to come, stick around, and contribute to the space. Lowering the bar for people to give us money makes a lot of sense. I think on naming scheme, I like capability-based naming. These capabilities would be determined by big-C consensus.

Jess - I find myself agreeing with what you're saying overall, but it seems like there needs to be some loose structure laid out. Because it already isn't clear what you need to do specifically to become an associate member or Big M. We do want people to contribute and do more and more.

Elan - I think it's a good idea. To sigint's point, I like the idea of a capability system. I am a big M member, but I'm not trained to re-focuse the laser cutter. I like the idea of saying everyone is a member. You can be a Supporting Member if you want to keep the lights on. I want to bring up that legally we are required to have a hierarchy in a small sense. We are required to have a board. We are required to have a way that people elect the board. But the board is still bound by consensus. Legally we have a hierarchy, but we have made it so that it is as toothless as possible. The minumum hierarchy is who can vote on the board and who can't.

SigInt - Focusing the laser is an example. Having root on certain boxes. If this capability is given to someone, can this do lasting harm?
So what is the actual mechanism for enacting this change? Is it Big C Consensus?

Elan - Yes it is. That would be something for next week. Coming up with the wording for the proposal is a good idea. Coming up with some suggestions for titles/language

Julius - something we're missing is a way to authenticate who is who. I think we should use RFID systems for more thing. Laser cutter seems like a good use case for this. Current implementation is fractured and essentially an honor system. Unified access control system would be really helpful. Another one would be gate-access which could be even more permissive.

Daniel - I don't want things to get scope-creeped and propagating changes. I see

Elan - I would recomend membership software from Spaceport/Matterport from the Calgary makerspace for a potential management of access control.

SigInt - Splitting proposal for renaming things and splitting capabilities (blocking big-C, voting on board, endorsing new capabilties).

Julius - we don't want to add administrative burden

Elan - maybe we can use the guilds to manage the permissions

SigInt - trying to think of how to plugin/replace existing system vs just renaming

Josh - We're massively drifted from the proposal, which is to change the name.

Daniel - The idea of a clean ACL proposal isn't in scope. If someone wants to do that then go ahead.

Josh - I think a centralized database of permissions is not very Noisebridge. I like
