Trip to Shooting Range

There is some interest in a field trip to a shooting range to shoot guns in a Safe and Orderly manner. If you're interested, list your name below, along with any time restrictions and whether you are able to drive a carpool. No previous knowledge or experience is required. If you always wanted to try shooting a gun, this is a good opportunity for that.

===Jackson Arms===
Jackson Arms is an indoor 25 yard range, about a 15 minute drive from 83c. They require that an experienced shooter be at each lane, but an experienced shooter can share their lane with two or three beginners, provided that the experienced shooter passes a safe handling test and signs a form taking responsibility for the actions of the beginners they're supervising. I've gone there with large groups before and they've been accommodating and friendly. They have fun stuff to rent, and I think it's a great place to learn.

===Chabot Gun Club===
My favorite range in the bay area is the Chabot Gun Club range in Chabot national rec area in the east bay. It's a gorgeous outdoor range in parkland, but a bit of a drive, and only open when weather permits. They don't have rentals, so we'd need to bring our own supplies. The longer ranges make rifle shooting a lot more interesting than it is at Jackson. The longer drive, occasional fogged-out days, and lack of rentals makes Jackson the easier option however.

I taught the Rifle Shooting and Shotgun Shooting merit badges for the Boy Scouts for six years; I could do a basic safety and technical lecture. I have one interesting rifle I'd be happy to bring, a 1912 SMLE. It's very enlightening to use a gun that's a century old, and still extremely reliable.

This is for everyone who wants to learn how to program but has told themselves it's "too hard."

I know how easy it is to feel dumb in the face of computers -- I do it every day -- and this will be a supportive and easy going group, with emphasis on hands-on learning rather than formal lectures. People will help each other as they get up to speed. I'm especially keen to reach people who think they "can't do programming" -- because they can.

(In a previous life I ([[User:Jtfoote|Jon]]) was the head instructor for a large introductory programming course: I've taught hundreds of people how to program, and won a teaching award for doing it.)

We'll be using "processing" (http://www.processing.org), a simple yet powerful graphic programming language targeted to artists and designers. Learning to program a processing "sketch" is straightforward and quickly rewarding: you can get up to speed and produce algorithmic art and interactive games in a session or two.

Though it is simple, processing is a full-featured language, not a "toy": the concepts you will learn (variables, loops, functions, arrays) are fundamental and necessary for programming in any other language.

More information, including downloads for all computers can be found at http://www.processing.org. I suggest you try some of the [http://www.processing.org/learning/ tutorials]: you may not even need a class!
