This page exists to to provide an insight into our shifting morass of community standards. These principles and standards are not necessarily the [[Consensus]] of Noisebridge, and anyone can edit this page at any time. Hopefully, the community can ensure that this page continues to reflect what we think.

The only hard and fast rule of Noisebridge is to [[Vision#Excellence | '''be excellent to each other''']], further codified by a consensus decision to enact our finalized [[The Anti-Harassment Policy | anti-harassment policy]]. Everything else is ''dicta''.

= Purpose =

* Noisebridge is a place for hacking, hackers, and learning to hack.
* Noisebridge operates by do-ocracy and consensus.
* The [[Noisebridge Vision]] describes what we are for, and what we are about.

= Disagreement =

* If you disagree with your fellow hacker it would be excellent to [[Conflict Resolution | work out your differences]] with them.
* If you cannot work out your differences one-on-one, it would be excellent to work out your differences through [[mediation]].

= Entrance and Membership =

* You do not need to be a Regular Member to hack at Noisebridge or to participate in the community here.
* It is [[Noisebridge_Vision#Excellence | excellent]] to take responsibility for the actions of anyone you invite or let into Noisebridge.
* It is [[Noisebridge_Vision#Excellence | excellent]] to use the resources of Noisebridge to hack and to actively participate in the community.
* You are actively encouraged to consider becoming a Regular or Associate Member of Noisebridge as described in the [[Membership | Regular Membership]] and [[Associate Membership]] pages.

= Conflict and Emergency =

*We want Noisebridge to be a welcoming experience for everyone who visits.
*We don't have absolute hard-and-fast rules. We do have [[Guidelines|a page on the Wiki]] that lists some guidelines that have proved useful predictors of whether you will annoy people.
*Please respect your fellow hackers by not disparaging them based on unfair grounds such as race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, and income or lack thereof; and by not making uninvited sexual comments toward others.
*If someone asks you to leave them alone or to otherwise stop a behavior that is directed toward them, please do so. Continued unwanted behavior directed toward another person is [[Harassment]].
*People who harass others or cause multiple complaints of disrespectful behavior may be asked to leave.
** It is considered [[Vision#Excellence | excellent]] to [[Do-ocracy | do-ocratically]] remove someone who is disrupting Noisebridge, or is clearly dangerous to others.
*** If someone asks you to leave, it is generally better to leave and return at the next Tuesday [[Meeting|meeting]] than it is to refuse to leave and possibly escalate the conflict into a [[Drama | hurtful exchange]].
*** If you remove someone like this, you should email [[mailinglist|noisebridge-discuss]], and raise it at the [[Meetings | next meeting]].
***If someone is removed from the space like this, they shouldn't return to the space except to work out the issue that resulted in their removal, either through [[mediation]], or by attending the [[Meetings | weekly meeting]].

Hooray! We're so glad you want to visit. Noisebridge is a space that has been [[Noisebridge Vision|designed since its inception]] to be open to pretty much all hackers 24/7. We especially welcome those who like to tinker and hack on things, and those who are generally nice. On average, we [[Community_standards#Do_Not_Want | do not want]] people looking for a halfway house to sleep in, using the space to store their items, coming here to indefinitely "borrow" or outright steal things, or being on the lookout for people to annoy. Our collectivist [[Do-ocracy]] -style anarchy is often strange to people who are accustomed to more authoritarian structures, and many new visitors are initially confused on how things work or who they should talk to about things. Noisebridge is located on the 3rd floor of 2169 Mission in the center of San Francisco's [https://www.airbnb.com/locations/san-francisco/mission-district Mission District]. Read up on [[Getting Here]]. There is a staircase and an accessible elevator. The elevator can be a little persnickety but it has a bell that rings up into the space for assistance if needed. == How Do I Get Into 2169 Mission? ==

If you are inside Noisebridge and want to open the gate for someone outside you can look through the handy-dandy "periscope" closed-circuit camera to see who's there. If you know them, hit the "DOOR" button on the intercom pad to buzz them in. Please take responsibility for the people you let into the space!

Otherwise, here are some cunning ways to get in.

Noisebridge is dedicated to providing a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, or religion. We do not tolerate harassment of people at our events or space in any form, including in the form of person-to-person bullying.

Sexual language, imagery, and direct references thereof should be only be used for positive purposes in accordance with best practices advocated by professional sex educators (if you’re not sure what those are, don’t do it).

Harassment and bullying include offensive verbal comments related to gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion, sexual images in public spaces, deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of talks or other events, veiled physical threats of any sort, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention.

People asked to stop harassing behavior exhibited anywhere in the space are expected to comply at once.

People caught violating the rules set herein subject themselves to be immediately sanctioned or expelled from the space at the discretion of any Regular or Associate member of Noisebridge.
