71.135.45.119: "last revision" not Reverted as declared, "claified" spelling error avoided, lockdown of anti-harassment policy still in effect

This page exists to to provide an insight into our shifting morass of community standards. These principles and standards are not necessarily the Consensus of Noisebridge, and anyone can edit this page at any time. Hopefully, the community can ensure that this page continues to reflect what we think.

The only hard and fast rule of Noisebridge is to be excellent to each other, further codified by a consensus decision to enact our finalized anti-harassment policy. Everything else is dicta.

Purpose
* Noisebridge is a place for hacking, hackers, and learning to hack.
* Noisebridge operates by do-ocracy and consensus.
* The Noisebridge Vision describes what we are for, and what we are about.

Disagreement
* If you disagree with your fellow hacker it would be excellent to work out your differences with them.
* If you cannot work out your differences one-on-one, it would be excellent to work out your differences through mediation.

Entrance and Membership
* You do not need to be a Regular Member to hack at Noisebridge or to participate in the community here.
* It is excellent to take responsibility for the actions of anyone you invite or let into Noisebridge.
* It is excellent to use the resources of Noisebridge to hack and to actively participate in the community.
* You are actively encouraged to consider becoming a Regular or Associate Member of Noisebridge as described in the Regular Membership and Associate Membership pages.

Conflict and Emergency
* Conflict_Resolution
*We want Noisebridge to be a welcoming experience for everyone who visits.
*We don't have absolute hard-and-fast rules. We do have a page on the Wiki that lists some guidelines that have proved useful predictors of whether you will annoy people.
*Please respect your fellow hackers by not disparaging them based on unfair grounds such as race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, and income or lack thereof; and by not making uninvited sexual comments toward others.
*If someone asks you to leave them alone or to otherwise stop a behavior that is directed toward them, please do so. Continued unwanted behavior directed toward another person is Harassment.
*People who harass others or cause multiple complaints of disrespectful behavior may be asked to leave.
** It is considered excellent to do-ocratically remove someone who is disrupting Noisebridge, or is clearly dangerous to others.
*** If someone asks you to leave, it is generally better to leave and return at the next Tuesday meeting than it is to refuse to leave and possibly escalate the conflict into a hurtful exchange.
*** If you remove someone like this, you should email noisebridge-discuss, and raise it at the next meeting.
***If someone is removed from the space like this, they shouldn't return to the space except to work out the issue that resulted in their removal, either through mediation, or by attending the weekly meeting.

If you wish to report harassment or other inappropriate behavior anonymously or privately, you can send a message to secretary@noisebridge.net

Do Not Want
* Noisebridge is your hackerspace, not your home. Living here is definitely an anti-pattern, so don't even try to do this!! If money is a problem, have a look at our page of starving hacker resources for ways to get around and crash if you're short on cash.
* Don't be creepy. Harassment is totally unacceptable, at any time.
* With the exception of Noisebridge's Anti-Harassment Policy as it directly applies to person-to-person bullying within the space itself, no clear consensus has yet been reached on adult cyberbullying on the NB IRC chat and NB discussion mailing list. Since the correlation is arguably strong between cyberbullying and dramatic events that have unfortunately occurred in the space during the recent past, it's clearly best to avoid both person-to-person and cyber bullying.
* Conflict: Please see our Helpful hints on human interaction.

Why Publish These Standards
It is important for regular users of the space to be aware of the purpose of Noisebridge. If people want to use the space and have no interest in or respect for hacking, this does not mean they are automatically unwelcome at Noisebridge, but they should thoroughly understand that their possibly UNexcellent use of the space is tangential to its key purpose. Consideration of such users' ability to remain at the space will be given over to consensus discussion and is ultimately at the discretion of the membership and other stakeholders.

Hi Noisebridge friends,

I just got the chance to check out your beautiful space and wanted to share my film about the Pirate Bay with your community.

We are releasing the film for free online from the premiere on Jan 8th.

Please check out the trailer here
Sorry about the heavy undo action here https://noisebridge.net/index.php?title=Noisebridge&diff=next&oldid=35239. Here's a rationale for my edits:

Noisebridge has now been designated as...
<br>Isn't that just a long winded version of "is"?

new visitors are just as welcome as always
<br>If they are new, then they wouldn't have any reason to wonder why this statement might exist.
<br>
<br>OTOH, gadlen, the most recent language using the terms "always welcome" is clearly more inviting and less cold to New Visitors. Although you yourself might disagree with this emphasis on attracting New Visitors to the Space, you might still want to more carefully review some of the Regular Members' proposals of this "more welcoming" matter on recent Discussion-list postings as well as in the last Meeting's minutes.

consider reading up on
<br>No, it's important they read up on it.
<br>
<br>OTOH, gadlen, the most recent language using the term "review"' succinctly hints at less in-depth "reading" of the required access methods; a definite +plus+ to many more of we excellent time-constrained folks.
<br>Why indeed is it so "important" that New Visitors undergo the ordeal of being required to slog through something that even remotely approaches an undergraduate essay to find out what they really need to know??!!

but it's best to visit when Full or Associate Members are present
<br>A new visitor doesn't care about the difference between full and associate members or that there is a difference. And saying it your way implies there is another, unstated type of member, which there isn't.
: Dearest 71.135.35.112, those are excellent edits, thanks! I'm glad we got to bounce them back and forth a bit.
: PS. A popular way to show discussion threading in Mediawiki is to add a ":" to the beginning of each line. That indents your text. Then the next response gets a "::", etc... It's not perfect, but that's what Wikipedia uses. Keep rocking. --gadlen (talk) 19:11, 18 November 2013 (UTC)
Since December 2007 we've had regular Tuesday meetings, and rented our first physical space as of October 1st 2008. We quickly outgrew our first space and have been at our much larger 5,200 square-foot second location since October 1st 2009. We are a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization as of July 2009, retroactive to October 2008.

Overview
Hooray! We're so glad you want to visit. Noisebridge is a space that has been designed since its inception to be open to pretty much all hackers 24/7. We especially welcome those who like to tinker and hack on things, and those who are generally nice. On average, we do not want people looking for a halfway house to sleep in, using the space to store their items, coming here to indefinitely "borrow" or outright steal things, or being on the lookout for people to annoy. Read here for more Visitor advice on our culture and some suggestions on how to interface with it. Our collectivist Do-ocracy -style anarchy is often strange to people who are accustomed to more authoritarian structures, and many new visitors are initially confused on how things work or who they should talk to about things. You can get an excellent gist of cutting-edge happenings by reading the notes from our latest weekly meeting.

Noisebridge is located on the 3rd floor of 2169 Mission in the center of San Francisco's Mission District. Read up on Getting Here. There is a staircase and an accessible elevator. The elevator can be a little persnickety but it has a bell that rings up into the space for assistance if needed. Read more about Accessibility.

How Do I Get Into 2169 Mission?
If you've never been to the space before, simply press the door bell on the right of the gate labeled "Noisebridge" with tiny text. If there's someone in the space who feels like giving a tour (most of the time, except for late at night and early morning) they may buzz you in.

If you are inside Noisebridge and want to open the gate for someone outside you can look through the handy-dandy "periscope" closed-circuit camera to see who's there. If you know them, hit the "DOOR" button on the intercom pad to buzz them in. Please take responsibility for the people you let into the space!

Otherwise, here are some cunning ways to get in.

* If you've got a valid code, you can use the payphone keypad next to the gate to let yourself in.
* There's an app for your Android device which will open the gate (almost) every time.
* SSH into Pony, and run <tt>opengate</tt>, which is an excellent wrapper for the Noisbridge API command <tt>curl -X POST http://api.noisebridge.net/gate/open</tt>.
* From inside Noisbridge, go to http://pony.noise/gate OR http://172.30.0.30/gate/
* Sadly, Gatebot doesn't work right now.

More info about doors, keys, openings, and mousetraps available here: Access_Control.

Staying In
To help facilitate excellent hacking, the membership community would like you to be vouched for while you are in the space.

As a Guest
Find a Regular or Associate Member that is physically in the space to vouch for you. When they leave, you might have to find another member to vouch for you or else you may be asked to come back another time. You might:
* ask a volunteer Noisebridge docent to introduce you to the space
* attend a Tuesday evening meeting, generally open to all visitors
* ask the teacher or coordinator of the event you're attending
* ask a friend or acquiantance of yours that's already in the space
* make a brand new friend in the space
* Go on the NB discussion mailing list or IRC chat and ask to meet a Regular or Associate Member at the space at a specific time

As an Associate Member
In brief: find 4 members to sign your application, done!
* Read up on becoming an Associate Member.
Since December 2007 we've had regular Tuesday meetings, and rented our first physical space as of October 1st 2008.

71.135.45.119: anti-harassment policy locked-down by User:Flamsmark

* Conflict_Resolution
