Overview
Hooray! We're so glad you want to visit. Noisebridge is a space designed to be open pretty much to anyone 24/7! We especially welcome those who like to tinker and to hack on things, and are generally nice. On average, we don't appreciate people looking for a halfway house to sleep in, to steal things, or to be on the lookout for giveaway freebies and people to annoy. Read here for more Visitor advice on our culture and some suggestions on how to interface with it. Our collectivist Do-ocracy -style anarchy is often strange to people who are accustomed to more authoritarian structures, and many new visitors are initially confused on how things work or who they should talk to about things.

Noisebridge is located on the 3rd floor of 2169 Mission. There is a staircase up and an accessible elevator as well. The elevator can be a little persnickety but it has a bell that rings up into the space for assistance if needed. More Accessibility info available as well. Read on for ways to get into the building.

You can also check out some more info on transit and Getting Here.

How Do I Get Into 2169 Mission?
If you've never been to the space before, simply press the door bell on the right of the gate labeled "Noisebridge" with tiny text. If there's someone in the space who feels like giving a tour (most of the time, except for late at night and early morning) they may buzz you in.

If you are inside Noisebridge and want to open the gate for someone outside you can look through the handy-dandy "periscope" closed-circuit camera to see who's there. If you know them, hit the "DOOR" button on the intercom pad to buzz them in. Please take responsibility for the people you let into the space!

Otherwise, here are some cunning ways to get in.

* If you've got a valid code, you can use the payphone keypad next to the gate to let yourself in.
* There's an app for your Android device which will open the gate (almost) every time.
* SSH into Pony, and run opengate, which is an excellent wrapper for the Noisbridge API command curl -X POST http://api.noisebridge.net/gate/open.
Staying In
Noisebridge is a hackerspace. To help facilitate excellent hacking, the membership community would like someone to vouch for you. Now that you're in, how do you stay in? An excellent question! There's a few ways:

Be a brand new visitor to the space and/or attend a Tuesday night meeting (the two easiest ways!)
* Ask a docent to introduce you to the space when you visit for the first time
* Attend a weekly meeting

Be a vouchsafed guest of a Regular Member or an Associate Member (the next easiest way)
* Find out if a Regular or Associate Member is currently present at the space to vouch for you
* Ask the coordinator of the event you plan on attending to vouch for you
* Ask your friend who is a Regular or Associate Member to go with you to the space
* Go on the NB discussion mailing list or IRC chat and ask if a Regular or Associate Member will go with you
* Go to the space and ask the person who lets you in to vouch for you (no guarantee!)

Become an Associate Member
* In brief: find 4 members that will vouch for you, go through the formal process of waiting a month or so for your name to be discussed at the weekly meeting, profit!
* Read up on becoming an Associate Member.
During the current process of establishing a critical mass of Associate Members, we request the short-term patience of you repeat visitors, especially when Regular Members or event hosts become unavailable at the space to vouch for you and thus get you in.

Noisebridge is up! We began building Noisebridge in February 2007. Since December 2007 we've had regular Tuesday meetings, and rented our first physical space as of October 1st 2008. We quickly outgrew our first space and have been at our much larger 5,200 square-foot second location since October 1st 2009. We are a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization as of July 2009, retroactive to October 2008.

Overview

* From inside Noisbridge, go to http://pony.noise/gate OR http://172.30.0.30/gate/
* Sadly, Gatebot doesn't work right now.

More info about doors, keys, openings, and mousetraps available here: Access_Control.

Staying In
Noisebridge is a hackerspace. To help facilitate excellent hacking, the membership community would like someone to vouch for you. Now that you're in, how do you stay in? An excellent question! There's a few ways:

Be a brand new visitor to the space and/or attend a Tuesday night meeting (the two easiest ways!)
* Ask a docent to introduce you to the space when you visit for the first time
* Attend a weekly meeting

Our collectivist Do-ocracy -style anarchy is often strange to people who are accustomed to more authoritarian structures, and many new visitors are initially confused on how things work or who they should talk to about things.

This page exists to to provide an insight into our shifting morass of community standards. These principles and standards are not the Consensus of Noisebridge, and anyone can edit this page at any time. Hopefully, the community can ensure that this page continues to reflect what we think.

The only hard and fast rule of Noisebridge is be excellent to each other, further claified by a consensus decision to enact an anti-harassment policy. Everything else is dicta.

Purpose
* Noisebridge is a place for hacking, hackers, and learning to hack.
* Noisebridge operates by do-ocracy and consensus.
* The Noisebridge Vision describes what we are for, and what we are about.

Disagreement
* If you disagree with your fellow hacker it would be excellent to work out your differences with them.
* If you cannot work out your differences one-on-one, it would be excellent to work out your differences through mediation.

Entrance and Membership
* You do not need to be a Regular Member to hack at Noisebridge or to participate in the community here.
* It is excellent to take responsibility for the actions of anyone you invite or let into Noisebridge.
* It is excellent to use the resources of Noisebridge to hack and to actively participate in the community.
* You can attempt to become a Regular or Associate Member of Noisebridge as described in the Regular Membership and recent Associate Membership pages.

Conflict and Emergency
* Conflict_Resolution
*We want Noisebridge to be a welcoming experience for everyone who visits.
*We don't have rules. We do have a page on the Wiki that lists some guidelines that have proved useful predictors of whether you will annoy people.
*Please respect your fellow hackers by not disparaging them based on unfair grounds such as race, gender, sexual orientation, and disability; and by not making uninvited sexual comments toward others.
*If someone asks you to leave them alone or to otherwise stop a behavior that is directed toward them, please do so. Continued unwanted behavior directed toward another person is Harassment.
*People who harass others or cause multiple complaints of disrespectful behavior may be asked to leave.
** It is excellent to do-ocratically remove someone who is disrupting Noisebridge, or dangerous.
*** If someone asks you to leave, it is generally better to leave and return at the next Tuesday meeting than to refuse to leave.
*** If you remove someone like this, you should email noisebridge-discuss, and raise it at the next meeting.
***If someone is removed from the space like this, they shouldn't return to the space except to work out the issue that resulted in their removal, either through mediation, or by attending the weekly meeting.

If you wish to report harassment or other inappropriate behavior anonymously or privately, you can send a message to secretary@noisebridge.net

Do Not Want
* Noisebridge is your hackerspace not your home. Do not live here.
* Don't be creepy. Harassment is totally unacceptable, at any time.
* Conflict: Helpful hints on human interaction.

Why Publish These Standards
It is important for regular users of the space to be aware of the purpose of Noisebridge. If people want to use the space and have no interest in or respect for hacking, this does not mean they are automatically unwelcome at Noisebridge, but they should thoroughly understand that their use of the space is tangential to its purpose and at the discretion of the membership and other stakeholders.

Noisebridge is a physical space open and welcoming to all Full Members, Associate Members, properly vouchsafed guests and new visitors, providing infrastructure and collaboration opportunities for any of the above interested in programming, hardware, crafts, science, food, robotics, art, and technology. We teach, we learn, we share. With no leaders, we have typically promoted a single overriding rule: "Be excellent to each other".

Our Name: A "noise bridge" is a piece of electronic test equipment that injects noise into a system to see how it responds, so you can fix or improve it. Such a device is often used in RF electronics.

Getting Here: Noisebridge is close to the 16th & Mission BART station, and the 14 Mission, 33 Stanyan, and 49 Van Ness-Mission Muni buses. The 22 Fillmore and 12 Folsom Muni buses are within a couple blocks.

Do I need to be a member? Noisebridge is open to all Associate Members, properly vouchsafed guests and new visitors, however Noisebridge runs off of Full Membership dues and donations. Full Membership is $80 a month (or a $40 “starving hacker” rate) and allows you to vote at meetings. If you aren’t a Full Member but regularly use the space, please feel free to consider dropping off a few dollars in the donation bin near the entrance, or set up a regular monthly donation for a smaller amount.

Meetings are every Tuesday at 8pm at the 2169 Mission space. Meetings are mostly for organizational purposes although anyone who might consider getting more involved with Noisebridge is definitely encouraged to attend these.

Anytime that Full Members or Associate Members are present is a good time to introduce yourself. Come on up, tell others about your interests, or ask people what projects they are working on.

Where can I find out more? The wiki is at https://www.noisebridge.net. The “Noisebridge-discuss” email list (and other lists) at https://www.noisebridge.net/mailman/listinfo

What can I do here? Meet techie, arty, and crafty folks, take a class, teach a class, use the power tools and electronic labs, build something out of stuff on the hack shelves, use our library, surf the web, cook up something in the kitchen, and so on.

Events, workshops, classes! Every week there are lots of activities at Noisebridge, planned and otherwise. Check the wiki for upcoming events, workshops, and classes. And feel free to add your own!

Noisebridge is a fairly open and permissive space for Full Members, Associate Members and properly vouchsafed guests, and the equipment (unless otherwise marked, or on a member shelf) is open for their use. Safety first! Feel free to come to Noisebridge to work and play on your project, or help others with theirs.

Noisebridge has lots of space available as a community resource for properly vouchsafed individuals and organizations to use -- please use it!

Can I leave my stuff here? Noisebridge is theoretically open to the public at-large, so use your judgment when leaving valuables here. Noisebridge is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Please label your boxes left here with your name, email, and the date. Avoid leaving your bicycle here overnight.
The daily storage shelves provide a space to leave your things for the day. The lost and found box is located on top of the shelves.
Full Members can leave items on their labeled member shelf for an extended period.
Soon this will have lots of explanatory text, and then it will get turned into a camera-ready PDF and printed all pretty-like and posted on the wall.

Here's some text I had for an orientation packet, for starters:

Noisebridge Orientation Packet
https://noisebridge.net
2169 Mission St., 3rd floor
San Francisco, CA 94110-1219

Noisebridge is open to all Associate Members, vouchsafed guests and new visitors, however Noisebridge runs off of Full Membership dues and donations.
