Our Linux Discussion meets every Wednesday from 6 PM to 8 PM in the Turing classroom. [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Turing]] It is an informal meeting and is wide open to any ideas relating to using the various [http://www.gnu.org gnu]-and-other-process/[http://www.kernel.org Linux]-based [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unix-like operating systems]. We are not limited to but do enthusiastically encourage:

* installations
* hardware investigation
* configuration
* troubleshooting

We started meeting weekly in mid-October, 2009 and have had a group develop who steadily attend. For other regular San Francisco Linux events see [http://www.sf-lug.org/ sf-lug.org] (twice per month), [http://www.balug.org/ balug.org] (monthly) and [http://opensource.sfsu.edu/ OLPC-SF] (monthly).

Many attendees run [http://www.debian.org Debian] derived distributions (including [http://www.ubuntu.com Ubuntu], [http://eeebuntu.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page eeebuntu], [https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Home teams] like the [https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CaliforniaTeam CaliforniaTeam]) but we are using others ([http://distrowatch.com distrowatch.org]) at home or at work such as [http://www.fedoraproject.org Fedora] derived (including [http://centos.org CentOS] & [http://www.redhat.com/rhel/ RHEL]), [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berkeley_Software_Distribution BSD] derived (including [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darwin_(operating_system) Darwin] and [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_X Mac OSX]), [http://www.opensuse.org/en/ openSUSE].

Believe it or not, Linux events also happen outside the city borders. For the adventuresome, two good lists of such far away events are available from [https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CaliforniaTeam/Projects/UserGroupContacts/Groups#SF wiki.ubuntu.com] and [http://linuxmafia.com/bale/ linuxmafia.com].

==About the group==
Information about what this group does.

The Linux Study Group ('''LSG''') has been created in direct relation to the sf-lug group.
A few of us get together to share studying skills for linux system administration and hack on '''any and''' '''all things linux/f.o.s.s.'''.
We have an eye on certification and use the LPIC (2nd Ed, O'Reilly) book and RHCE Study Guide (4th Ed, Exam RH302, Osborne) by Michael Jang
on red hat certification.
Emphasis is on '''everyone''' being welcome, doing first, then learning.
We meet in a classroom reserved @ those times & days listed which has full connectivity via wireless/hardwire and whiteboards.
We encourage '''new people of all user levels''' to join in.
We also encourage users/hackers of other (or multiple) operating systems who are interested in linux and what they can and will do with it.
==Meeting time and location==
* what's a system administrator, anyway? what skills are important?
* do we want to set up some local system for isos of interesting distros?
