Noisebridge is a space for sharing, creation, collaboration, research, development, mentoring, and of course, learning. Noisebridge is also more than a physical space; it's a community with roots extending around the world.

== The Idea ==

Noisebridge is an educational non-profit corporation, 501(c)3 public charity status.

We provide infrastructure and collaboration opportunities for people interested in programming, hardware hacking, physics, chemistry, mathematics, security, robotics, all kinds of art, and, of course, technology. Through talks, workshops, and [[projects]] we encourage knowledge exchange, learning, and mentoring.

As a space for artistic collaboration and experimentation, we are open to most types of art - with a special emphasis on the crossover of art and technology. From hardware labs to electronics and sound labs, most things that're creative are most definitely welcome.

Many interesting things happen in the space. We've found that sharing is essential to making this work. We strive to begin from a point of respect and trust. We believe it builds a safe community and that this best fosters innovation and creation.
Our motto is "Be excellent to each other." We also have writings on [[community standards]] and an [[anti-harassment policy]] which covers all conduct in the physical space and in our online spaces.

Leadership is taken by individual members for specific projects. We call this "sudo leadership" after the *nix command ''sudo'' which allows a regular user to do one root-level, or superuser, task. In other words, if you want Noisebridge to do something, start doing it.

Here's some paraphrasing from our bylaws:
Through talks, classes, workshops, collaborative projects, and other activities, we want to encourage research, knowledge exchange, learning, and mentoring in a safe, clean space. We provide educational spaces for teaching practical skills and theory of technology, science, and art. We provide work space, storage, and other resources for projects related to art, science, and technology that will benefit the individual members' personal growth in their fields of interest, encouraging the individual members to share their projects and knowledge for the betterment of society through art, science and technology. We create, learn, and teach, individually and as a group, inviting members of the community in the San Francisco Bay area and the world. We develop, support the development of, and provide resources for the development of free and open source software and hardware for the benefit of society. We promote collaboration across disciplines for the benefit of cultural, charitable, and scientific causes.

== Financing it ==

We self-finance through membership fees ($80 per member/month with $40 "starving hacker" rate), beverage sales, and parties, the way European hacker spaces do it. We also welcome one-time or recurring [[Donate_or_Pay_Dues|donations]] from members and non-members alike. Donations and sponsorships will accompany renovation and equipment purchase. Within the first 24 hours of renting a space, we raised over $10,000 for a cool location and meaningful projects. Hi all,

Here are my notes from the meeting today. Please let me know if you have
any additions, questions, or amendments, etc.. I'll wiki-fy them after a
day or two, including any fixes people send me, unless someone else
feels like doing it.

Roughly 32-35 people in attendance.

1) Incorporation Status

* Secretary of State has accepted the incorporation documents
* The first Board resolutions to activate the corporation have been drafted, need to be slightly fixed up, redrafted, and then signed by Board members. Then we are an active California Public Benefit Non-Profit corporation.
** ETA: Wednesday 8 October 2008
** Andy and Mitch take responsibility for obtaining signatures
* David Molnar will file online for a Tax ID number
* Noisebridge will then open an account with Wells Fargo
** There is a branch down the street
** Question about Wells Fargo's stability - they appear to be stable (they are eating other banks, not being eaten)
** Question about credit unions -- they appear not to be a good fit for small businesses
* Wells Fargo can be changed later if membership desires, but we need a bank account now

2) Keys, Dues, Membership

* Shannon Lee sent out to make many copies of the key to the space
** People are getting keys tonight

* Bootstrap Membership process
** We have talked about a 3 month contribution/waiting period
** Do not want to prevent people from being members who have contributed so far!
** Therefore invite people to join now
** Initial members will help us all make a membership process
** Goal: simple 1-page document to sign stating agreement with Noisebridge mission, disclaim liability, and agree to pay dues on time

* Dues: where does it go?
** Rent - $1975/month
** Electric bill - we're not sure exactly, but $300-$600?
*** Previous tenants paid $365 for 1.3 megawatt-hours (13,000 100-watt lightbulbs on continuously)
*** House can use 2 megawatt-hours per month
** Connectivity - DSL + cable bill
** Consumables - toilet paper, resistors, etc.

* Board exists to fill will of membership
* Want to trust the members. "We're not sacred cows. Don't be afraid to kill us."
** "Don't actually murder us."

* Want to collect 2x rent every month
** Cushion because we don't know our monthly expenses yet
** Will be moving target until we work this out

* Two proposals for membership fees, assuming 55 members:
1) Baseline fee of $75, "starving hacker" fee of $50
2) Baseline fee of $80, "starving hacker" fee of $40

* We accept donations above membership fee
** If you want a "Corporate Rate" of $5000/month we can do that

* Pay 3 months or more at a time if you can
** Helps Noisebridge figure out what to expect
* Jake promises to sink as much money as needed to keep Noisebridge running for one year more

* Feeling that $10 makes a difference to starving hackers, so $80/$40
* What do members get for their dues?
** Need to work that out with members
** Keys at a minimum
* Membership lapses? 1 month behind on dues?
** Another thing to figure out
** Won't take away key because you're one month behind

* Door lock progress
** Goal: keycard lock
** Thomas is obtaining bill of materials for AnonAccess keycard system
** We will be obtaining a quote for SALTO DESFire system, too
** Contact David Molnar to be on the Lock Team

* For now, trust the members to do the right thing with keys
* Do we redo key discussion when we have a new lock?
** Probably not, but we will talk about it
** Likely scenario: trade in key for keycard
* What if income is low enough that $40 is too much?
** Gender issues, women work for 50 cents/dollar
** Scholarship program - Noisebridge forgives some dues?
** Sponsorship/patronage program - one member sponsors another?
** We will try to work something out
* The $40 is not "hard wired"
* Grants?
** Jake looking at $150K grant for "hacker in residence" program
* Want to make Noisebridge accessible as possible
* Even if not member, not paying dues, welcome to hang out at space!
* Members will also be part of consensus process
** Welcome input from non-members too, but members decide
* Greg wanted to point out that the $80/$40 can be reviewed at a future time, even if we agree to it now
** Put as agenda item for meeting on wiki
* Treasurer will open source accounting
** Subject to privacy of donors - $1k in anon donations already

* Should ask "does anyone disagree" with consensus rather than "does everyone agree" - easier to hear when there are dissenting voices
** Adopted

* After Shannon arrived with the keys (at the end of the meeting), Jake then asked people to sit down. Then Jake asked people to stand up if they felt they had made a contribution, that they would continue to make a contribution, and they were OK with paying dues. Many people stood up, they all got keys.

* Consensus: Move forward with $80 baseline, $40 "starving hacker" dues, with concerns noted about payment in kind, sponsorship, or scholarship for people that can't afford $40 but still contribute. Also noted that these numbers are open to revision.

3) Consensus Process and Running Meetings

* Proposals for improving meeting and consensus process:
** 90 minute time limit to meetings
** Recorder reads back consensus to everyone, asks "Does anyone disagree?"
** Do not decide big things in same meeting when introduced
** Limit ad-hoc agenda items (see also 90 minute time limit)
* Who joins the consensus process? "Wander in off the street" issue.
** Have to be a member
** Person has to be a member of a group for consensus to work
** This deals with "out of nowhere" problem
* Can we get IRC channel to discuss beforehand?
** Yes. See #noisebridge on irc.freenode.net !
** Sadly, this by itself does not shorten meetings
* NYC Resistor - need to do a cool project to be a member
* What about members interested but not present?
** Some weeks people can't leave the apartment
** People travel
* Ubuntu Boston meetings: webcam, IRC
* Space will have projector, webcam, microphones
* Work on telepresence and tele-consensus needs doing
* Process discussion will go on wiki
* Consensus: we are not done yet discussing the consensus process. More work needed.

4) Safety Committee

* Seth Schoen is starting a Safety Committee. He couldn't make it tonight, but he has already started adding things to the space.
* Currently 2 fire extinguishers, some goggles, earplugs, etc.
* e-mail the list and start a wiki page about Safety Committee
* Action items for Safety Committee: figure out agenda items for near future meeting
* Question - are board members on Safety Committee? Jake is.
* Consensus: we have a Safety Team.

5) Kitchen and Chem Lab

* Shannon previously had suggested on list that we scrap the kitchen and use it exclusively as a chem lab.
* Shannon stated at the meeting that he felt the consensus was to keep the kitchen. No one disagreed with this.
* Meredith described plans for a fume hood on casters.
* Meredith and Shannon will form the Chem Lab Team. Talk to them if you want to help out with building out the chem lab.

* Consensus: we keep the kitchen. We have a Chem Lab Team.

6) Insurance Status

* David Molnar is handling interactions with insurance agents.
** One agent gathering a General Liability quote for us
** Another agent has given us application forms
** Forms sent to board@lists.noisebridge.net, archives public
** Check wiki page, ask David if any questions

* We are applying for the following insurance:
** $1MM of general liability, $500K per occurrence, because the lease says we need to have it. Covers slip and fall, accidents, etc.
** Property theft insurance - $15K replacement cost, $1K deductible, but this may change depending on the premium. This covers Noisebridge property of the space only, so it covers the oscilloscope but it DOES NOT cover your laptop! We will ask about coverage for member property and see how much it costs.
** $1MM of Directors & Officers insurance. Protects board and officers in case a donor sues the corporation for mishandling a donation among other things. At a previous meeting Alameda County Computer Resource Center people suggested seriously having this.

* These are starting points for insurance so we can get up and running. We can revisit in the future. In particular we may want to increase the coverage for member property. That depends on our finances and the cost. Our priority now is to get the basics in place to cover operations.
** Until then, please don't leave your laptop in the space.

* Two people pointed out that renters' insurance may cover personal property lost in the space. Check your coverage!

* Consensus: David M. should continue to pursue insurance.

7) Safari

* Brian/endenizen is researching Safari, online book service for O'Reilly books
* Current status is we can get a corporate account at no cost to Noisebridge proper, then that enables individuals to access cheaper plans than they could obtain on their own. Need minimum 5 people.
* Plans are pre-paid, cheapest is $153/year in advance
* Cheapest plan is 10 books / 30 day period, not downloadable
* Slightly more expensive plan allows downloading
* Plans rocket up in cost from there
* Still need individual accounts under the corporate account, but these accounts are transferable
* Brian asked if group is OK with having a group account, also asked if there were at least 5 people interested
* More than 5 people raised their hands
* Meredith pointed out competing services may be available.
* This does not establish a precedent that all no-fee corporate accounts are automatically OK. For example, would need to discuss a corporate Zipcar account. Settle on case-by-case basis.

* Consensus: Brian can move forward with a corporate account for Noisebridge and organizing Team Safari. Several members have concerns about being associated with a service that uses Digital Rights Management, but these concerns are not blocking. In addition, future corporate accounts must be discussed on a case-by-case basis.

7. I was nearly flat chested until I was 17... and then... I have this distinct memory of chasing my friend's little nephew down the beach to which she said "Better be careful, or you'll give yourself a black eye with those things". It was in that moment that I realized that somehow, the body I thought I knew, wasn't the reality. I had 32D's seemingly overnight.

And, just like everyone else, they got bigger and bigger, and my self esteem dropped lower and lower, as the clothes/look I aspired to have and activities I wanted to partake in became impossible. And then the pain started.

Neck spasms, numbness in my hands and elbows, shooting neck pain, lines and heat rashes under my boobs. Then the chaffing and rubbing and sweat.

So, finally, after years of considering and never really pursuing this procedure, I decided to stop dragging my feet and making excuses and get the damned thing done!

Since REALLY deciding about 2 weeks ago, everything has just fallen right into place! I currently live overseas but found a doc in my hometown that's willing to do Skype consultations and work with my insurance provide on my behalf. The staff there has been amazingly helpful and understanding so far (though I'm going to withhold the name of the practice until everything is official).My husband is super supportive, as are my family and friends, and I feel like every little hiccup has somehow turned into a blessing and been worked into making this thing actually happen!

8. I was a late bloomer, but when I finally did bloom, I bloomed hard. The last time I was measured, I was a 34/36 H, which is the size bra I am wearing in the pictures, but I believe I am bigger than that now due to changes in birth control. I very rarely wear underwire bras because they are so uncomfortable, and I tend to stick to industrial strength sports bras and granny bras which really are not cute. I have been experiencing low, middle, and high back pain, shoulder and neck pain, and frequent tension headaches for a couple of years and I am really hoping that getting rid of some of the weight will help relieve this. I am fairly tall (about 5'8") and have an athletic build (broad shoulders, small (relative to my shoulders) waist, with a bit of extra fat. My boobs are not proportionate to the rest of me and make me look larger than I am.

9. I am a 25 y/o hairstylist. I have had large breasts since 7th grade when I came back to school over break and had developed into a large D. From there I kept developing and graduated high school at an F. In the past couple years with a little weight gain, I have topped out at a 38 H. I'm a pretty active human. I workout a couple times a week, walk and run with my dog and enjoy a decently active lifestyle. But my large chest has always held me back. I currently wear 2-3 sports bras and suffer from back pain as well as some neck pain. Especially after working a long day behind the chair.

10. I remember always wanting large breasts so that I would pray so much as a young girl, my prayers were answered and My boobs started growing at 11. I was a C at 13 and an E at 15. I really can't remember when they started getting out of hand but I just remember being 16 and going to get bra sized because I was just pouring out of my bras and that's when I was told I was a 28GG which made my heart drop. I was so small it didn't make sense for my breasts to be this large. I could never get clothes to fit me because my arms and waist were so small but my chest was so big. I stopped looking at my self in the mirror naked around that time because I didn't want to overthink something I didn't think I could change. I avoided any intimate relationships because of this huge insecurity! I was so skinny I couldn't even lose weight, it was all breast tissue. Luckily for me my mother was always supportive and noticed my back pain and struggles with the breasts, my frame just couldn't hold them, she knew I would have to get a reduction at some point in my life but I was still too young. Because I'm so small my figure was reduced to a 'P' shape.
Fast forward to me earlier this year. For so long I'd been trying to stay super positive but one night I was studying for exams and I just couldn't handle the back pain for sitting for so long. It was unbearable, I broke down crying and was in a depressive state, I realised that my breasts were my whole identity. They were the first thing you saw, I felt them like a wound everyday of my life.

11. Developed early, never really stopped. Cried every night wondering why it was happening to me. I have never really adjusted to the size of my chest, I am very small everywhere else and am literally a pair of giant breasts on two legs. I want to be able to exercise. I want to be able to buy clothes. I want to be able to have normal interactions with people (yes, women too). I want to be able to date normally.

12. Like many women here my breast size has always been a 'thing' in my life. from early on they started and never stopped growing!! I was a B up at 11 and by 14 I was a C/D. By 16 I was DD(and was popping out of those but they were the biggest bras I could find!) at 22(15 years ago!) I finally was fitted at a specialty lingerie store for a bra to wear for my wedding . I was fitted for a 36 F and they didn't have any bigger cups that were a 36 band size, back then if the cup got bigger the band got bigger! it didn't fit well but was the best I had at the time. That one bra cost me $125!! 1.5 years later after my first child I went back to that store for a nursing bra and left again with something too small but the best there was. soon after was pregnant and nursing my second child. I lived in that nursing bra for 3 years!!
Finally a few years a new bra store opened up and ran over there. its where I have been shopping ever since!! the first bra they fitted me in was a 36 H. after 2 more babies I am now wearing a 34K.

13. I’ve always had large breast my first bra was a c cup at age eleven
By the time I was 15 I was wearing a DDD Bra i never used to let it bother me even when people would continually stop me to make comments about my boobs and how much my back must hurt, at the time I was wearing size 2 clothing with a minuscule waistline
As I started college I started realizing he cons to having such large breast, I couldn’t wear halters without them cutting into my neck and ever so often I would get slight pains in my shoulders and lower back which I did not contribute to my large breast at the time. Very quickly I realized my bras no longer fit and I needed a bigger size, by the time I was 30 I was wearing a 34k bra and could not fit in strapless bras

14. I remember going into the 5th grade pretty flat chested and starting middle school with a C cup. It's like they literally grew over night. Can you imagine? An 11 year old with a C cup! I used to wear jackets all day (even during the summer) to try to hide my overly developed breasts. By the time I was 16, I was very petite at 5’3 and 120 pounds wearing a 38 ddd, which obviously was not the correct size because my back was so little, and I’m sure at least 6 pounds came from my breasts. I'll say I'm pretty sure I was an H cup then. I got my bras from Lane Bryant which was the only place I could find bras that “fit." Someone as petite as me had to shop in a plus size store just for bras.

Fast forward a couple of years and I'm graduating high school a 32 K. I'm now 22 and 170 pounds. Still a 32 K. I wish I wasn’t as heavy but unfortunately I didn't lose the weight before surgery, so I will lose it afterwards. I've had neck and shoulder pains for years, especially if I was standing or sitting for too long. My back pain would come and go. It would be its worse during my period because the weight of my boobs would become too much. I stopped trying to complain to doctors about back pain after an incident with a nurse. I was maybe 16 when I tried to tell her I was having back pain. She went into the hallway and started talking loudly with her coworker. I can still recall what she said, and her words still stick with me today. She stated that I was a little ol thing with big breasts trying to complain about back problems, and it was probably just gas. *insert huuuuge eye roll here* Not only was that unprofessional, but who was she to tell me my pain was something as simple as gas?

15. I am 42 years old and have big boobies probably the last 30 years.. With two children they became even more bigger.
