INTRODUCTION
The Noisebridge Digital Archivists group is for anyone interested in a range of topics including book scanning, digitizing video/audio, open access, creative commons, and more. We usually meet on Wednesdays at 7pm. Check the mailing list to see if there's a meeting this week.

The Noisebridge book scanner was demonstrated at the 2015 Maker Faire in San Mateo
A summary of topics in our mailing list will be posted soon.

HARDWARE
----
Our first project was to build a book scanner at Noisebridge based on the open-source DIY Book Scanner design. Check out the schematic, below, to see all the components.

SOFTWARE
----
The device captures from both cameras simultaneously by using USB drivers provide by gphoto2 wrapped into a nice python script here. Check out gphoto2 here and the list of supported cameras here. If you have linux you can just type: sudo apt-get install gphoto2

Currently we are making simple scripts to perform Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and produce searchable full text as PDF documents Github Code Repository. Check it out and fork our repos.
We should take a little bit of Noisebridge to MakerFaire, the world should be so lucky.

TLDR: Come to Noisebridge Thursdays 19:00 - 22:00 and help make this a thing. We need makers, presenters, and teachers.
Contact Jarrod hicksu@gmail.com or message me on Slack for more details

Noisebridge is an important resource for people to learn and make. We are more than a "makerspace", we are a community with a social mission to bring educative and creative autonomy to as many as possible. We have had a rough patch but we have done some good work during the recent Reboot to work toward this mission and it is time to attract some attention.

People are getting projects done here and this public hackspace thing may still be a good idea. Let us use this upcoming MakerFaire to get people to come to Noisebridge and to come back to Noisebridge. Let's connect with other Hackerspaces and strengthen our relationships. Let's meet other hackers and makers, and bring projects into our space so that others may learn from them.

See the Build Night recapitulations at the bottom of this page for progress.

All about that booth
The plan is have a good time and to pack a whole bunch of Noisebridge into a 10' x 10' space. Within MakerFaire we are going to do our best to create a mini Hackspace that will support the ideas and creations that others will bring. Here is the idea:

Essentially we are creating a place where people can hack during the show and the ultimate exhibit is our community and our projects.

Nevertheless, the base for this space is going to be some custom furniture pieces that will be made at Noisebridge, with love, for hacking. (When all you know is design and woodworking, every answer tends to be custom furniture). The centerpiece of this affair so far, is a new work table with built in power outlets and a bright flashy Noisebridge logo on the top. A table that people can pull up a chair to and start working on a project. If there are other things that we should try to incorporate into a hacking table, let us know. The back of the booth is a set of rearrangeable cabinets that will store tools and projects for use during the show and support and audio/video system for demonstrations and presentation during the show.

Here are more specific plans for the booth furniture, I recommend the .pdf:
Every Thursday 19:00 to 22:00 we will meet at Noisebridge, likely in the shop, to work on building things for the booth. This includes the furniture and whatever else is being prepped for MakerFaire. Updates to this process will be posted on the mailing list and the blog.
We should take a little bit of Noisebridge to MakerFaire, the world should be so lucky.

TLDR: Come to Noisebridge Thursdays 19:00 - 22:00 and help make this a thing. We need makers, presenters, and teachers.
Contact Jarrod hicksu@gmail.com or message me on Slack for more details

lolwut?

Well made furniture /= mini hackerspace, we need participation!
* help build out the booth, add to it, decorate it, make it better, make it more 'Noisebridge'
Ideally, everyone would get to go down to MakerFaire and check out the neat stuff. For those that can't we should have an event to bring in Makers who are in town to talk about their projects and meet up with other hackers/makers. I'm thinking a special Five minutes of Fame and a mellow cocktail party.
Casting and Finish
The NB logo is 298in^3 or ~165 fluid ounces

Tested : Ultra-Glo epoxy resin - pigment TBD

May switch the the comperable but less expensive EasyCast
http://www.amazon.com/Environmental-Technology-128-Ounce-Casting-Craft/dp/B004Y46G10/ref=pd_sim_hg_4?ie=UTF8&refRID=0STYH4AQMX1N9196CCQJ
1 gallon kit is $77.60 via Amazon prime, need two kits $155.20

Electrical and Electronics
LED Strip: WS2812B individually addressable
Can be purchased from ebay or alibaba.
example: http://alturl.com/eh5k6 $9.99-12.99/meter
or http://www.adafruit.com/category/168 for $24.99/meter
JH - We have ~16' of linear distance inside the logo. So I'm considering purchasing this from the ebay vendor:
-- LEDs/m: 60, Board's Color: White, Waterproof Grade: Epoxy IP65, Length: 5m, Price:US $74.99

LED Controller/driver:
Arduinos work fantastically. A Pro Mini works great and cheap.
JH- https://www.sparkfun.com/products/11113 is this correct? $9.95
HT- Yeah that works perfectly.

Power for microcontroller and LEDs:
Just need a 5v power supply of some sort, can be salvaged from existing cords by splitting the wire open and solder onto on/off switches.
JH- Something like this? https://www.sparkfun.com/products/12889 $5.95
HT- Yeah this works perfectly.
I expect we need something separate for the LEDs. We will have >16 feet of them in the table.
You make a good point, do you know of any electrical engineer that can do calculations on the electricity draw?

100-1000uf capacitor:
To prevent sudden power drops.
https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/ws2812-breakout-hookup-guide

Wiring and Power
Need wiring diagram and Spec
TO SPEC: breaker, outlets, wire, jbox, switches, wire nuts
IEC 60320 C14 power inlet to connect to outlet inhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEC_60320#C13.2FC14_coupler

Tools
Have: Typical NB Shop tools, Plate Joiner,

Need: Router bits with bearing over the blade to help the speed and accuracy of the logo channel cuts as we increase their depth.

We should take a little bit of Noisebridge to MakerFaire, the world should be so lucky.

TLDR: Come to Noisebridge Thursdays 19:00 - 22:00 and help make this a thing. We need makers, presenters, and teachers.
Contact Jarrod hicksu@gmail.com or message me on Slack for more details

lolwut?

Here are more specific plans for the booth furniture, I recommend the .pdf:

https://noisebridge.net/images/2/24/Noisebridge_MakerFaire_Booth.pdf

UPDATED NB Logo Channel drawing:

The .pdf of the current working drawings for for the table that we are building is here:

https://noisebridge.net/images/a/a7/Noisebridge_MakerFaire_Table.pdf

Every Thursday 19:00 to 22:00 we will meet at Noisebridge, likely in the shop, to work on building things for the booth. This includes the furniture and whatever else is being prepped for MakerFaire. Updates to this process will be posted on the mailing list and the blog.

Well made furniture /= mini hackerspace, we need participation!
* how do we demonstrate Noisebridge in a 10' x 10' area, is it possible to also enjoy this?
* help build out the booth, add to it, decorate it, make it better, make it more 'Noisebridge'
* lend/bring your projects, demonstrate your projects, and teach others you know
* work on projects at the show, and have projects for others to work on
* spread the word about us needing help and get people to come meet us.

Pre-MakerFaire Noisebridge Maker Meet and Greet
Ideally, everyone would get to go down to MakerFaire and check out the neat stuff. For those that can't we should have an event to bring in Makers who are in town to talk about their projects and meet up with other hackers/makers. I'm thinking a special Five minutes of Fame and a mellow cocktail party.
