* DCSpenceley is offering The Wrong thing to us today. A curator in spain named David Culais(?) has put together the world's first all digital art exhibition with 40 embassies all over the world. They have no embassy in San Francisco. DCS does circuit bending and has been curious to visit. Could we shoot video projectors November first and look at Net art over some beers? +1 BEER Spenceley is going to buy a case of beer for starters and finger foods. MORE BEER 6-9PM on November 1. Patrick is looking for a member to sponsor it and help organize it. Will compose a noisebridge announce email once details finalized.
* Patrick: Refresh is 24th or 25th of the month, closing the space except to hacking on the space itself! There's a riseup pad and trello board for projects to do.

* Patrick: Membership is not like anywhere else. It is not a gym. You don't have to be a member to do anything. Many of the things were done by non-members. Shelves, AV, wiring, not people who were members. People just want to make an awesome thing and NB empowers them to do it. Noisebridge is a 501c3 and all of this exists for public benefit. You can come in off the street and woodshop or 3D print. Membership is a commitment to stewardship of the space. Comes with monthly dues payment. Has tax writeoff status as a non-profit donation. It is a commitment to running the community health and maintenance of the space. You are signing up to help out and give back. Ask not what Noisebridge can do for you but what you can do. The one benefit is that you can participate in the consensus meeting with a block. What you get from membership is participation in consensus process. This is how we do really big decisions. Emotionally intense for all the right reasons and slow.
* Amy: Would the second floor decision be a consensus decision?
* Patrick: Yes. And making policy changes.
* Ben: Spending money.
* Patrick: Yes. It costs $40 or $80 or by agreement with the Treasurer.
* Patrick: Philanthropy happens to be a way to donate and have 24 hour access that is easier than applying for membership. It is like membership without the consensus blocking rights.
* To get membership, you fill out a form and get two members in good standing to sponsor you and it sits in the binder announced for 4 weeks. After 4 weeks your membership becomes a consensus item. You get asked what consensus means to you and what you like about Noisebridge etc. Then you leave the room, people discuss you and you get invited back to be a member or not.

* To get Philanthropist, you apply with one member signature and it waits one week and then you become a philanthropist.

= Financial Report =
* Funds in bank: $36,645.04 of which $10-$11,000 is allocated to Noisetor to run large Tor exit relays for public good and benefit and accept donations for that cause and run servers in LA that help political dissidents an journalists do their work without getting caught by their oppressive government.
* This means that we have $25,000 in cash. Our operating expenses are $5000
* Rent is $4356 plus expenses.
* We must have 3 months operating expenses and we are close to having 6.
* We don't have enough recurring donations to cover costs but we would like to get more monthly donors to get all the good feels and tax breaks you should do that.

* Based on the old Quaker meeting, this is the opposite of majority rule. You must propose a modification for specific principled objections and possible alternatives.
* If you feel a proposal is wrong, try to come in with ideas to round off the sharp edges.

* Patrick: The building is owned by elderly couple. This rent is their retirement. Total family thing. Managed by son. Our space was an extension to the clothing business. Not zoned for office space so it can't get market rate. We pay around $.80/sqft. Only businesses that will pay the low rate will accept conditions. Unlikely to get boring folks downstairs.
* Double union just signed a lease a week off into dogpatch.
* We can't get down to look at it yet.
* We have a very small classroom that's constantly packed and under capacity. It would be amazing to expand classes and move loud things to the same floor.

Mari: I've wanted to do a fundraising event for a while. The Made is doing a kickstarter for their second space for the video game museum.
* We did an Indiegogo last year and the rewards and tiers are still being fulfilled. Could we get a scaleable reward set. Indiegogo took around a dozen people to fullfill.

* What ideas do we have for new things we could do in a bigger space?
* A VR room could bring in a lot of enthusiastic users.

* Dan: Could we do a trial month to month to test it out and reality check for our financial reports and get bigger.
* Lessons learned from fundraising before. 1.5 years, we endeavored to raise $25K and are still recovering. We would be doing twice that per year.
* Ceilings are almost this high and ith as more internal walls.

Noisebridge is a space for sharing, creation, collaboration, research, development, mentoring, and of course, learning. Noisebridge is also more than a physical space; it's a community with roots extending around the world.

== The Idea ==

Noisebridge is an educational non-profit corporation, 501(c)3 public charity status.

We provide infrastructure and collaboration opportunities for people interested in programming, hardware hacking, physics, chemistry, mathematics, security, robotics, all kinds of art, and, of course, technology. Through talks, workshops, and [[projects]] we encourage knowledge exchange, learning, and mentoring.

As a space for artistic collaboration and experimentation, we are open to most types of art - with a special emphasis on the crossover of art and technology. From hardware labs to electronics and sound labs, most things that're creative are most definitely welcome.

Many interesting things happen in the space. We've found that sharing is essential to making this work. We strive to begin from a point of respect and trust. We believe it builds a safe community and that this best fosters innovation and creation.
Our motto is "Be excellent to each other." We also have writings on [[community standards]] and an [[anti-harassment policy]] which covers all conduct in the physical space and in our online spaces.

Leadership is taken by individual members for specific projects. We call this "sudo leadership" after the *nix command ''sudo'' which allows a regular user to do one root-level, or superuser, task. In other words, if you want Noisebridge to do something, start doing it.

Here's some paraphrasing from our bylaws:
Through talks, classes, workshops, collaborative projects, and other activities, we want to encourage research, knowledge exchange, learning, and mentoring in a safe, clean space. We provide educational spaces for teaching practical skills and theory of technology, science, and art. We provide work space, storage, and other resources for projects related to art, science, and technology that will benefit the individual members' personal growth in their fields of interest, encouraging the individual members to share their projects and knowledge for the betterment of society through art, science and technology. We create, learn, and teach, individually and as a group, inviting members of the community in the San Francisco Bay area and the world. We develop, support the development of, and provide resources for the development of free and open source software and hardware for the benefit of society. We promote collaboration across disciplines for the benefit of cultural, charitable, and scientific causes.

Do-ocracy

Typically when someone wants to do or change something big at Noisebridge, they bring it up at a meeting and it goes through our [[Consensus Process]]. Most of the time many of us just don't want to be troubled with spending a week figuring out if everyone is ok with a small or mundane thing, and so there's Do-ocracy. Do-ocracy tends to work just as long as our only rule is followed, to be excellent to each other.

An important part of being excellent is documenting your change. Write a note on Noisebridge's [[ChangeLog]], or leave a note on what you do-ocratically did. Contact numbers are especially important if you want people to contact you about the change. The biggest challenge in a do-acracy is not reversal, but ascertaining (and taking) responsibility.

Welcome to Noisebridge! We're glad you're interested in our space and we look forward to seeing you soon. Here's some advice to help you
understand what you're getting into and see if it appeals to you.

====Who is welcome====
Everyone is welcome and encouraged to visit Noisebridge. We ask that visitors follow our [[Noisebridge_Vision#Tripartite_Pillars|guiding rule]] "to be excellent to each other" in the best spirit they can; please see our [[Getting_In|access policy]]. New visitors can drop by anytime unannounced and do not necessarily need an invitation for a tour or for attending a scheduled event/class. It may be wise to follow our suggested advice below on the best times to visit, to ensure there are people there who can let you in.

Noisebridge is [[Accessibility | wheelchair accessible]] though people who use wheelchairs may need help with the heavy manual [[elevator]] doors.

====Come with an open mind====
Noisebridge is largely about learning and exploring, and there's lots to see and learn here! Activities at Noisebridge include hanging out, working on personal or group projects, and scheduled or improptu workshops and classes on a range of topics, from foreign languages to photography, lockpicking, woodworking, computer programming and mathematics.

====Some times are better than others====
We have many scheduled activities in the space, and many of us have day jobs. You can coordinate the time of your visit to ensure that you can find people to talk with (and especially [[Getting_In|to let you into the building]] in the first place!)

* Are you new? Wondering when to drop by? Come by any evening - you don't necessarily have to wait for a class, an event or a meeting. Any night there will generally be people hanging out, and you're welcome to just show up, to say "I'm new!" and then get a tour, or to just relax and work on your laptop until a conversation of interest comes up.
* If you're interested in particular activities, check out our schedule, posted on the [[Noisebridge|main page]] of this site.
* If you'd like to come during unstructured time and talk with lots of people, after hours are generally best.
* If you'd prefer a quieter environment, come earlier in the day.
* If you'd like to see the anarco-syndicalist factory of how a long-living hackspace is maintaining, tag along to our [[Meeting|Tuesday 8pm meeting]], where affairs are often '''excitingly''' hashed out.
* You're unlikely to find many people in the space before noon on most days.

* The people around you may not know you well, but they might love you a bit more if you fix a random thing. Even if its just cleaning plates of dishes, helping to organize the parts bins, or tidying an obviously dirty desk.

====Who's in charge?====

YOU ARE! (with the consent of the folks around you!) Noisebridge attempts to be as leaderless and as non-hierarchical and unruly as we can get. We encourage anyone in the space to be as responsible as anyone else. If you're a new visitor, that means the member or vouchsafed guest who you first meet is as good as anyone else to ask questions of.

====Our code of conduct====
Our [[Noisebridge_Vision#Tripartite_Pillars|chief guiding principle]] is to "be excellent to one another". Please respect the other people you meet at Noisebridge and the Noisebridge space itself.
We welcome visitors because we believe in our community and want to share the things we're working on with everyone. We also have [[community standards]].

====Other people's stuff====
Please try to be careful with the things you find at Noisebridge, and recognize that the things on shelves are other people's stuff.

====Not "child-safe"====
We have not limited what we like to explore or discuss according to anyone's notions of "appropriateness" for children. Thus, anyone entering the space can be exposed to ideas, concepts, language and items which some would consider "adult-themed". We also have some tools and materials that can be hazardous for children or adults if used improperly. Children are as welcome in the space as any other person - just be prepared for what they may encounter.

====Hostile network====
The network at Noisebridge - like any public network - should be regarded as potentially hostile. This means that you should assume that any unencrypted communications over the network could be (and most likely are) monitored by others. Examples of vulnerable communications include POP3/IMAP email clients, most web browsing, IRC/AIM and similar chat protocols that are often not encrypted. While no issues have come up to date, and our code of conduct opposes malicious monitoring of others, it is wise to be aware of the potential. Stick to using SSL or secure tunnels or VPNs for anything that uses a password or that you otherwise wouldn't want other people to read. If you don't know how to protect your communications with encryption, many people at Noisebridge would be glad to help you out! (It would be nice if someone would provide links to a decent guide here.)

=====Attempt at a Semi Decent Guide=====

The most secure option you have is to set up [https://inside.mines.edu/~gmurray/HowTo/sshNotes.html an SSH tunnel] to a remote server, and then use a proxy server like [http://www.pps.jussieu.fr/~jch/software/polipo/ Polipo] to forward all your HTTP through that server. Done properly, this will encrypt all your traffic without any further worries. If you do not have SSH access to a remote server, then you can use Tor or similar to encrypt your traffic without exposing it to the Noisebridge network.

The fallback position is to ensure that as many services as possible use HTTPS by default (especially webmail) and at least have browser based solution to protect against [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross-site_request_forgery CRSF]/[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross-site_scripting XSS] attacks for everything else. This may happen even if the website itself is solid -- if you're on a compromised internal network, the attacker can inject content into any HTML page that you're reading.

* Although coming up with a good password is nice, you're far more secure if you use a password manager like KeyPass or 1Password. The best password is one you don't remember.
* If someone gets their hands on the physical machine, all bets are off. Try to avoid strange USB sticks and CDs, even if they look shiny.

Here is an updated drawing of the Noisebridge space as of 2017-05-24. This is a minor update based on measurements done from 01/17/2013 to 01/20/2013. I have included a PDF for quick plotting, scaled for 36x24 paper and the original CAD file for future updates. I have been careful in my measuring but the walls of the space are not straight. Always verify measurements on site if tolerances for new projects are going to be tight.

Other notes:

Double pane windows, no central air or heat -- good view of downtown.. the space would require much less bring-up than others, with the exception of removing some partitioned areas to open it up a bit.

There is a security camera that covers the front door/lobby. The realtor said that it was not currently hooked up to record, and people with keys or friends with keys may avoid it by using the back entrance.

Mi Ranchito Produce & Carnicería is located directly below Noisebridge, or, rather, Noisebridge is located directly above it. It is open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. 7 days a week. 
As its name indicates, in addition to a reasonable selection of produce and albarrotes, there is a butcher counter in the back. For a cheap snack you can get pan dulce, 3 for a buck - Mexican pastries, cookies, rolls and småkaker. They also, among their produce and Hispanic groceries, have a decent supply of typical snack/junk food, as well as an impressive selection of Latin American soda pop, including the world's best apple soda, Pepsi's entry into the market, [http://www.manzanitasol.com/us?wptheme=English Manzanita Sol], and now Toronja ("Grapefruit") Sol, a competitor to another soft drink popular in Mexico, Squirt.

There's a liquor store across the street, just past Sycamore, at 2128-2130 Mission. I'm pretty sure they're open 24 hours; if not they're open later than pretty much everyone else. They accept credit cards but charge a dollar per transaction, even though that contravenes the Merchant Agreement every vendor must sign with Visa and MasterCard. Despite the sign out front don't expect to find any actual groceries here. Lots of heavily processed junk food and delicious cheap alcohol. A dangerous place to find myself when I've got the munchies.

== Noisebridge Hours Frequently Asked Questions ==

The answer to the question "when is Noisebridge open?" is somewhat complicated. The short answer is that it's almost always open, but new people shouldn't drop by in the middle of the night since there's only a few people around to make introductions. The long answer is best given in the form of a conversation much like this one:

Q: When is Noisebridge open?

A: Noisebridge is as open as possible. Access is generally available from 11am to 10pm, either by having an [[RFID_Token|access token]], or someone else being present to greet visitors. During events, we’re more likely to have volunteers to show you around and make introductions.

Q: I can come use the tools there during that time?

A: If you know how to [[Getting In|get in]], yes.

Q: Aren't you worried about people coming in and ripping off your tools?

A: That would be unexcellent of them, and the people in the space would do something about it if they saw it happen.

Q: What people?

A: Whoever is at Noisebridge.

Q: There's someone at Noisebridge all the time?

A: Almost always, yes.

Q: Do they work for Noisebridge?

A: No. Noisebridge doesn't have any employees. Only volunteers.

Q: Do they live at Noisebridge?

A: No. Noisebridge isn't zoned for residential use and no one lives at the space.

Q: Then why are there always people at Noisebridge?

A: The many people who use Noisebridge have different sleeping habits, and it just so happens that there's almost always someone there working on something.

Q: Who's in charge then?

A: No one in particular.

Q: Then why hasn't it burnt down?

A: Because someone would notice the fire, put it out, and then the arsonist would get kicked out of the space permanently. We would then have a lively debate amongst ourselves about the merits of fire art and freedom of expression.

Q: But I thought you said no one is in charge?

A: Everyone who visits Noisebridge is expected to do their part in keeping the space safe, including doing whatever it takes to make sure the building doesn't burn down. That includes you.

Q: So I'm in charge?

A: No, you're merely expected to do something about someone trying to light the building on fire.

Q: But what if the person who is lighting the building on fire is saying the fire is necessary to keep the space safe?

A: That's ridiculous. If you think about it, there is no circumstance in which burning the building down will improve Noisebridge in any way. Therefore, the person setting the fire is wrong and you can ignore him or her.

Q: Ok, then who sets the hours for Noisebridge?

A: The people who are at Noisebridge. The collective action of everyone at the space sets a precedent and creates behavioral inertia, but no one person specifically does so.

Q: Does that include me?

A: Yes. By participating in our community, your actions help decide what direction Noisebridge will go in. This includes introducing other new people to the space and showing them what you know. This concludes this long-winded explanation.

We have five mostly functional sewing machines:

Industrial style machines:
* Single Needle Lock Stitch (Juki DDL 227)

Home-style machines:
*Brother SE400 Combination Computerized Sewing and 4x4 Embroidery Machine

= Tips =
* Please DO NOT unthread the sewing machines unless you must. (e.g. to remove a spool of thread, simply cut it close to the spool so that the next person can simply tie a knot with the next thread and pull it all the way through to the needle). This is most important for the serger.

* Needles, bobbins, and other parts are located in labeled drawers underneath the pegboard (PLEASE KEEP IT ORGANIZED). Also check the drawers attached to each sewing machine table.
** The closest place to get parts is at Apparel City, on Howard between 11th & 12th.
** Needles may differ between machines and come in sizes (10, 12, 14, 16, etc.). The higher numbers are heavier gauge needles suitable for thicker fabrics. Leather needles have a tiny blade at the tip. Don't use a leather needle for other fabrics, though, it will cut the threads rather than squeezing between them, leaving holes that may start rips.
**Needles for the straight stitch machines must be inserted with the scarf facing right. Please check the respective manuals.

* If you've never operated a sewing machine before, ask some people at Noisebridge (Kyle or Ely). Sewing machines are not self-explanatory and this page does assume a certain amount of prior general knowledge.
**Read the manual and do some research online.
**Printed manuals for the two Juki Machines and the Thompson are located in a grey binder on the bookshelf

==Winding a Bobbin==
*Juki DDL-227 & Juki LU-563
**To wind a bobbin, place the empty bobbin on the horizontal spindle to the right of the machine body (near the hand wheel). Run a second thread through the upper holder, down to the tensioner at the back of the right side of the machine, in line with the spindle. Thread the end through one of the holes in the bobbin side, from the inside to the outside. Press the lever to push the spindle down in contact with the sewing machine belt. While holding the thread end so it doesn't just whip out of the bobbin, press the pedal to run a couple of inches (if there were fabric in the machine). Soon enough you can let go of the thread end as it will have been caught by windings on top of it. If you are doing a lot of sewing, you can start a new bobbin before the current one is empty, and let it wind up as you sew. When the bobbin is full, the lever will automatically snap out away from the belt and stop winding thread.

*Pulling fabric out of the machine may cause thread breaks. It is best to feed thread with the pedal when removing your workpiece.
*DO NOT UNTHREAD THE SERGER. It takes about 30 minutes and a lot of patience to thread this machine. However, if you are an experience user of industrial sergers you will be able to thread this machine quickly. Using tweezers helps. In February of 2016 we were approached by [http://www.kaitianlaser.com/ Beijing Kaitian Tech. Co., Ltd], after Mitch gave them a tour of Noisebridge they offered us a new 100w laser cutter as a donation (with the stipulation of us taking care of shipping costs). As of July 1st 2016 (and after a crazy adventure involving a rental truck, a forklift, and a lot of Indian pizza), we now have the laser in house. Please check out our action items to see what needs to happen next.

** We've raised about $1500 so far
* Build a room for it, with some sound insulation and ventilation that can handle the fumes.
** The laser current lives in the Sparkle Forge.
* Come up with a plan for the room, and raise funds for buildout of the room.
* Review what else needs to happen to get the laser installed and the area in the Sparkle Forge it sits in happy
* Source some computer gear and a new monitor
* Some work to better figure out the laser software

The shavings that come off the metal piece being cut are HOT!

In a stationary tool that has been used on wood, there is typically a nice big thick bed of sawdust inside the tool. When the metal shavings fall into this bed of sawdust, an awesome smoldery fire can build up sight unseen inside of the tool. Yay!

When possible it is best to have two separate dedicated tools... and/or if one is going to be transfered over into metal service the inside should be vacuumed out first, and/or the operator should check inside the machine when they are done.

An open conference area occupies the central area of our building layout. The conference area contains three long tables and
chairs necessary to accomodate approximately 24 people. The tables may be moved to accomodate more chairs and more people.

The conference area has a ceiling-mounted video projector on one side and a remote-controlled drop-down projector screen on the opposite side.
We also have two large speakers located on either side of the projector screen. There is an audio receiver, mediacenter computer, and multiple
audio/video inputs along the side of the conference area for connecting a laptop or other a/v equipment to our projector and audio receiver.
Video inputs include HDMI, VGA, and DVI.

The Accessibility Fund was created and seeded with $200 by a city requirement to spend an additional 20% of the cost of any new construction on accessibility improvements. These funds will be allocated by recommendation of the accessibility working group (TBD), which will prioritize the voices of people who are most affected by accessibility problems with the space.

The Roguelike Celebration has spent $2,062.50 on socks and $531 on metal pins. This event used to be hosted at Noisebridge and still raises money through Noisebridge’s financial infrastructure in exchange for a big donation. We will need to account for all roguelike income and expenses at some point; right now it’s all clumped into the general fund.

We have a $1,737 payment to Jakprints on October 26, possibly for stickers and t-shirts, but maybe for the Roguelike Celebration. I think this is our usual printer for t-shirts. @patrickod or @maltman23 may be able to confirm if these printing costs are for Noisebridge (general fund) or the Roguelike Celebration (which will be accounted for separately).

One caveat about the numbers in this report: It’s possible that Noisetor revenue since October 9 is missing, and their regularly scheduled hosting payment didn’t go through. If some revenue is reallocated to Noisetor, that would decrease the general fund total and increase the Noisetor total, without changing our overall bank balance. When their hosting payment goes through, that will decrease the Noisetor total and our overall bank balance by $1,547.

Reimbursed drink expenses were $929.96, mostly reflected in totals from previous financial reports. Total expenses from the event add up to $3,639.24, not counting Club Mate consumed. The bartenders estimated 5 boxes, or 100 bottles, of Club Mate were consumed, previously purchased with general fund money at an estimated total cost of $315. $587.04 of that came from the broadcast fund. $638.01 of that came from the equipment fund. $2,729.19 came from the general fund, inclusive of the estimated cost of Club Mate consumed.

Our total revenue over the long weekend was $4,988.60. Subtracting expenses that were reimbursed from the general fund, the general fund increased by $2,259.41 over the weekend. Subtracting all expenses, our overall total accounts increased by $1,034.36. But spending money from the equipment fund and broadcast fund is a good thing! That money is meant to be spent.

(Note: Because this takes into account the estimated cost of Club Mate consumed, technically our cash accounts increased by $1,359.36, and the cash in our general fund increased by $2,574.41. But I think the cost of Club Mate should be included in the accounting for the event, the same way we deducted the cost of purchasing alcohol. The fact that Club Mate was pre-purchased in bulk is immaterial for our purposes of analyzing the event.)

We do not tolerate harassment of people at our events or space in any form.

Different users of Noisebridge have different levels of comfort about sex and porn. Nobody should be forced to experience sexual or sexualised language or imagery. This does not mean that such material is prohibited, just that such conversations, presentations, &c. should include only interested and consenting people.

When you are working on a sex- or porn-related project at Noisebridge, or are running such an event or presentation, provide reasonable notice and warning to allow others the opportunity to opt out if they wish. With this — as anything else — each person has a responsibility to be considerate of the comfort levels of others. Discussions, projects, and events of this nature should strive to exist in a culture of respect and consent.
