== Noisebridge Hours Frequently Asked Questions ==

The answer to the question "when is Noisebridge open?" is somewhat complicated. The short answer is that it's almost always open, but new people shouldn't drop by in the middle of the night since there's only a few people around to make introductions. The long answer is best given in the form of a conversation much like this one:

Q: When is Noisebridge open?

A: Noisebridge is as open as possible. Access is generally available from 11am to 10pm, either by having an [[RFID_Token|access token]], or someone else being present to greet visitors. During events, we’re more likely to have volunteers to show you around and make introductions.

Q: I can come use the tools there during that time?

A: If you know how to [[Getting In|get in]], yes.

Q: Aren't you worried about people coming in and ripping off your tools?

A: That would be unexcellent of them, and the people in the space would do something about it if they saw it happen.

Q: What people?

A: Whoever is at Noisebridge.

Q: There's someone at Noisebridge all the time?

A: Almost always, yes.

Q: Do they work for Noisebridge?

A: No. Noisebridge doesn't have any employees. Only volunteers.

Q: Do they live at Noisebridge?

A: No. Noisebridge isn't zoned for residential use and no one lives at the space.

Q: Then why are there always people at Noisebridge?

A: The many people who use Noisebridge have different sleeping habits, and it just so happens that there's almost always someone there working on something.

Q: Who's in charge then?

A: No one in particular.

Q: Then why hasn't it burnt down?

A: Because someone would notice the fire, put it out, and then the arsonist would get kicked out of the space permanently. We would then have a lively debate amongst ourselves about the merits of fire art and freedom of expression.

Q: But I thought you said no one is in charge?

A: Everyone who visits Noisebridge is expected to do their part in keeping the space safe, including doing whatever it takes to make sure the building doesn't burn down. That includes you.

Q: So I'm in charge?

A: No, you're merely expected to do something about someone trying to light the building on fire.

Q: But what if the person who is lighting the building on fire is saying the fire is necessary to keep the space safe?

A: That's ridiculous. If you think about it, there is no circumstance in which burning the building down will improve Noisebridge in any way. Therefore, the person setting the fire is wrong and you can ignore him or her.

Q: Ok, then who sets the hours for Noisebridge?

A: The people who are at Noisebridge. The collective action of everyone at the space sets a precedent and creates behavioral inertia, but no one person specifically does so.

Q: Does that include me?

A: Yes. By participating in our community, your actions help decide what direction Noisebridge will go in. This includes introducing other new people to the space and showing them what you know. This concludes this long-winded explanation.

An open conference area occupies the central area of our building layout. The conference area contains three long tables and
chairs necessary to accomodate approximately 24 people. The tables may be moved to accomodate more chairs and more people.

The conference area has a ceiling-mounted video projector on one side and a remote-controlled drop-down projector screen on the opposite side.
We also have two large speakers located on either side of the projector screen. There is an audio receiver, mediacenter computer, and multiple
audio/video inputs along the side of the conference area for connecting a laptop or other a/v equipment to our projector and audio receiver.
Video inputs include HDMI, VGA, and DVI.

*For the latest announcements, please subscribe to the email list here: https://www.noisebridge.net/mailman/listinfo/sewing/

= Overview =

We have five mostly functional sewing machines:

Industrial style machines:
* Single Needle Lock Stitch (Juki DDL 227)
*Straight Stitch Walking Foot (Juki LU-563)
*Five-thread Overlock Serger (Juki MO-2416)

Home-style machines:
*Brother SE400 Combination Computerized Sewing and 4x4 Embroidery Machine
*130-Stitch Computerized Sewing and Quilting (Brother XR1355)

We also have these sewing amenities:
* Giant ass table with cutting mat surface (50 inches x ? inches )

* Irons and Ironing board

* Big donation bins of extra thread and fabric you can use for projects

* lots of odds and ends

* 2 dress forms

- Full length mirror

= Tips =
* Please DO NOT unthread the sewing machines unless you must. (e.g. to remove a spool of thread, simply cut it close to the spool so that the next person can simply tie a knot with the next thread and pull it all the way through to the needle). This is most important for the serger.

* Needles, bobbins, and other parts are located in labeled drawers underneath the pegboard (PLEASE KEEP IT ORGANIZED). Also check the drawers attached to each sewing machine table.
** The closest place to get parts is at Apparel City, on Howard between 11th & 12th.
** Needles may differ between machines and come in sizes (10, 12, 14, 16, etc.). The higher numbers are heavier gauge needles suitable for thicker fabrics. Leather needles have a tiny blade at the tip. Don't use a leather needle for other fabrics, though, it will cut the threads rather than squeezing between them, leaving holes that may start rips.
**Needles for the straight stitch machines must be inserted with the scarf facing right. Please check the respective manuals.

* If you've never operated a sewing machine before, ask some people at Noisebridge (Kyle or Ely). Sewing machines are not self-explanatory and this page does assume a certain amount of prior general knowledge.
**Read the manual and do some research online.
**Printed manuals for the two Juki Machines and the Thompson are located in a grey binder on the bookshelf

*Use scraps for testing to determine thread tension and sewing speed.

==Winding a Bobbin==
*Juki DDL-227 & Juki LU-563
**To wind a bobbin, place the empty bobbin on the horizontal spindle to the right of the machine body (near the hand wheel). Run a second thread through the upper holder, down to the tensioner at the back of the right side of the machine, in line with the spindle. Thread the end through one of the holes in the bobbin side, from the inside to the outside. Press the lever to push the spindle down in contact with the sewing machine belt. While holding the thread end so it doesn't just whip out of the bobbin, press the pedal to run a couple of inches (if there were fabric in the machine). Soon enough you can let go of the thread end as it will have been caught by windings on top of it. If you are doing a lot of sewing, you can start a new bobbin before the current one is empty, and let it wind up as you sew. When the bobbin is full, the lever will automatically snap out away from the belt and stop winding thread.

== Repairing a Sewing Machine ==
* If a sewing machine is actually broken and non functional, as opposed to just you can't figure out how to make it work, please call Billy from Apparel City at 415-816-8645 (mobile) and schedule an appointment for him to come fix it.
** He usually charges around $80 per hour, plus parts.
** Email the [https://www.noisebridge.net/mailman/listinfo/sewing/|sewing list] and people will chip in to cover this. If you can't manage this process, email the sewing list and find someone else who can. Also, please put a note on the machine so people know what is going on with it.
== High Speed Lock stitch (Juki DDL 227) ==

*[[Juki Maintenance Notes]] - Replacing the counter knife, needle bar, thread guides, etc.
These were originally written for our old DDL-5550-6 machine but the 227 is very similar.

=== Overview ===
* General fabrics, light-weight materials and medium weight materials.
** '''Not for leather or book binding.''' Please use the right tool for the job.
* Clutch motor (fast!)
*Recommended thread size of Tex-40 in the DDL

== Straight Stitch Walking Foot (Juki LU-563) ==

*This is a high tension machine. You must press the knee lifter to pull thread through. This will release the tension.
**Conversely, DO NOT run into the knee lifter at all while sewing. This will release the tension and your stitches will be too loose.
*Pressing back or letting go of the pedal will engage the brake. Slightly depress the pedal to release the brake. You must do this to use the hand wheel

=== Overview ===
* Medium weight and heavy weight materials, leather and vinyl
** Not for light-weight materials!
* Clutch Motor
** This machine is VERY fast
*Horizontal Bobbin
*Recommended thread size Tex-70 in the walking foot
== Five-thread Overlock Serger (Juki MO-2416) ==

*Pulling fabric out of the machine may cause thread breaks. It is best to feed thread with the pedal when removing your workpiece.
*DO NOT UNTHREAD THE SERGER. It takes about 30 minutes and a lot of patience to thread this machine. However, if you are an experience user of industrial sergers you will be able to thread this machine quickly. Using tweezers helps. Also, using the correct thread for the correct machine is essential. Good Luck and happy sewing.

=== Overview ===
This machine is not made for knits. It is made for wovens. It is a five spool. It has a clutch motor and this is the reason that it goes so very rapidly. The overlock sews to prevent fray. However, the machine make a chain stitch at the same time. For example, if you were to look inside of your jeans, you can observe these methods. A chain stitch and overlock. This type of machines is used for medium weight fabric.

*This machine has a knife placed to cut the fabric as you sew, and it *is possible* to cut your finger badly on this knife if you are not careful. BE CAREFUL. This machine also can go extremely, sometimes startlingly, fast.
== Brother SE400 Embroidery Machine ==
This machine is awesome, and can do many different stitches as well as CNC embroidery.
It's usually stored on the wall of the sewing area. It looks like a home sewing machine but is as expensive as an industrial one and is many people's favorite machine.
*This machine is stored away in one of the sewing area cubbies.

=== Overview ===
*This machine does 130 different stitches including lots of cool decorative flowers and patterns. It is also the only machine that can do a zig-zag stitch.
==Overview==
The Electronics Lab is located on the south wall of 2169, straight ahead as you enter the space. It has soldering irons, racks of components, oscilloscopes, multimeters and other electronics related stuff.

There is a [https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Circuit_Hacking_Monday Circuit Hacking] event every Monday 7pm till late where you can come to learn how to solder or work on your project with expert help available. Or show up any other time to avoid the rush and work on your own!

Awesome equipment that noisebridge has:
* [http://www.testequipmentdepot.com/weller/solder/wmrs.htm Weller WMRS] surface mount soldering iron - [http://www.testequipmentdepot.com/weller/tips/rttips.htm super small tips]
* Hot air rework station - [http://www.electro-tech-online.com/general-electronics-chat/88645-aoyue-2702a-cheap-rework-station.html Aoyue Int 2702A+]
* Dozens of cheap soldering irons & holders (for circuit hacking)
* Multimeters - [http://www.made-in-china.com/showroom/victor001/product-detailptYnLMEOJJCd/China-Digital-Multimeter-VC97-.html Vichy VC97] - auto ranging, but slow. There are two more older multimeters as well, but neither is auto ranging.
* Oscilloscopes - [http://www2.tek.com/cmswpt/madetails.lotr?ct=MA&cs=mur&ci=15530&lc=EN Tektronix 2235] 100MHz; [http://www.testequipmentdepot.com/ezdigital/os5020.htm EZ Oscilloscope OS-5020] 20MHz; [http://nebula.deanza.edu:16080/~norona/3500_oscilloscope.html JDR Instruments Model 3500] 35MHz.  All two-channel. [[Oscillocope introduction]] (material from Tektronix)
* logic analyzer - Tektronix 1241
* frequency generator - Leader LFG 1300S
* more stuff like Textronix 5A18N Dual Trace Ampl (?), various other old things (at least two ancient o-scopes, an ancient vacuum tube volt meter)
* Good power supplies - BK Precision 1621A is 0-18V 5Amps; Thandor TS1542S is 0-15V 4Amps; both are two channel.
* Shrink wrap, breadboards, solderless breadboards, pre-stripped jumper wires, headers, etc.
* Massive supply of wires - almost any gage in any color available, both stranded and solid core.
* Huge bins of AC power cords, wall warts, ethernet cables, hackable old electronic items like laptops, etc.
]

==Inventory==
* [http://parts.noisebridge.net parts.noisebridge.net] a complete database of the Noisebridge electronic component bins! This is read-only from outside of the LAN. A work in progress, please contribute when you are at Noisebridge.
= Library: What's the point? =

'''There's already a public library!'''

Since there's a public library, we're going to focus on books that fill the needs of people using the space right now.

'''Anyone can access what they want over the internet almost all the time!'''

If electronic books are already accessible, we can focus on the people who would still prefer to use a paper copy.

'''A more refined goal:'''

The mission of the library is to serve technical or hacker-y literature to people in Noisebridge right now.

''' How do we get there? Quantify, Expand, Prune! '''

*First: Know what books we have. (done)
*Second: Create a process to acquire books that fill the library's mission. (we need a lot)
*Third: Prune our shelves a bit. Bring the average usefulness up. (needs work)

= What can I do? =

Lots of help is needed! There are 3 major things to do:

* '''Initiative 1''': Improve the collection: Collect sets of topic books from experts and source these books
* '''Initiative 2''': Add "topic"-based color on spine labelling system to library
* '''Initiative 3''': Improve [http://library.noisebridge.net] [https://github.com/robbintt/library-org]

== Things To Do ==

''' Initiative 1: Source New Books '''
* Are you really good at something or reasonably well read? Make us a list of must-have books!
* Add themed lists here: [[https://noisebridge.net/wiki/Resources/Library#Books_We_Want]]
* You can help acquire books by sourcing books on these lists!
* Don't subtract them from the lists, we can make a system for checking them off
* Who will give us great books? Anyone. Mailing list?

''' Initiative 2:  Label by topic! '''
* Label all books already in library-org with subject "color" on the spine.
* Add: moveable magnetic labels you can slide paper into

''' Initiative 3: Improve library-org '''
* library-org is a Flask app
* Current capabilities: receive new books, substring search, add location to each book, register new locations.

= Other Hackerspaces with Libraries =
* [https://garoa.net.br/wiki/Biblioteca Garoa Hacker Clube] Koha

= Bookshelf Directory =

You can find where various categories of books are found by checking out the visual directories posted on the two main shelves.

The files for these directories with editable form fields:

[[Media:Bookshelf-left.pdf]]

[[Media:Bookshelf-right.pdf]]

= Hacking the bookshelves =

The bookshelves have LEDs that operate on the flaschen-taschen protocol. Learn more [https://noisebridge.net/wiki/Bookshelves here].

== How many books do we have right now? ==

A book barcode scannning effort was performed in October-December 2015 using [https://github.com/robbintt/noisebridge_bookscanner noisebridge-bookscanner].

1657 books have been ingested into library-org using [https://openlibrary.org/ Open Library]

IMPORTANT: If you do any of the work below, be sure to update the list to remove the ones you added.

'''Here is a list of the barcodes that aren't yet in library-org.''' Each one represents an unknown book... please solve me.

</nowiki>

One way to solve these is to google the UPC individually and find the book it corresponds to. At least one of the books in here is available this way. Try to find out which one!!

'''Here is a list of ISBNs that aren't in openlibrary or library-org.''' The workflow to add these is to find them on amazon, type the data into OpenLibrary, then import the OLID into library-org.
'''A note regarding cutting metal in stationary tools:'''

The shavings that come off the metal piece being cut are HOT!

In a stationary tool that has been used on wood, there is typically a nice big thick bed of sawdust inside the tool. When the metal shavings fall into this bed of sawdust, an awesome smoldery fire can build up sight unseen inside of the tool. Yay!

When possible it is best to have two separate dedicated tools... and/or if one is going to be transfered over into metal service the inside should be vacuumed out first, and/or the operator should check inside the machine when they are done.

Noisebridge is dedicated to providing a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion, housing status, or language. We do not tolerate harassment of people at our events or space in any form.
</blockquote>
<blockquote>
Harassment includes offensive verbal comments related to gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion, sexual images in public spaces, deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of talks or other events, persistent uninvited communication, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention.
</blockquote>
<blockquote>
Different users of Noisebridge have different levels of comfort about sex and porn. Nobody should be forced to experience sexual or sexualised language or imagery. This does not mean that such material is prohibited, just that such conversations, presentations, &c. should include only interested and consenting people.
</blockquote>
<blockquote>
When you are working on a sex- or porn-related project at Noisebridge, or are running such an event or presentation, provide reasonable notice and warning to allow others the opportunity to opt out if they wish. With this — as anything else — each person has a responsibility to be considerate of the comfort levels of others. Discussions, projects, and events of this nature should strive to exist in a culture of respect and consent.
</blockquote>
<blockquote>
People asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately.
</blockquote>
<blockquote>
People violating these rules may be sanctioned or expelled from the space or the event at the discretion of any Noisebridge member.
</blockquote>

If you wish to report harassment anonymously or privately, you can send a message to secretary@noisebridge.net (or contact one of the people who have volunteered as a mediator on the [[Mediation|Mediation]] page).
Here is an updated drawing of the Noisebridge space as of 2017-05-24. This is a minor update based on measurements done from 01/17/2013 to 01/20/2013. I have included a PDF for quick plotting, scaled for 36x24 paper and the original CAD file for future updates. I have been careful in my measuring but the walls of the space are not straight. Always verify measurements on site if tolerances for new projects are going to be tight.

Welcome to Noisebridge! We're glad you're interested in our space and we look forward to seeing you soon.[[File:Door3.jpg]]
[[File:Acme.png]]
[[File:Organizing.png]] Here's some advice to help you
understand what you're getting into and see if it appeals to you.

====Who is welcome====
Everyone is welcome and encouraged to visit Noisebridge. We ask that visitors follow our [[Noisebridge_Vision#Tripartite_Pillars|guiding rule]] "to be excellent to each other" in the best spirit they can; please see our [[Getting_In|access policy]]. New visitors can drop by anytime unannounced and do not necessarily need an invitation for a tour or for attending a scheduled event/class. It may be wise to follow our suggested advice below on the best times to visit, to ensure there are people there who can let you in.

Noisebridge is [[Accessibility | wheelchair accessible]] though people who use wheelchairs may need help with the heavy manual [[elevator]] doors.

====Come with an open mind====
Noisebridge is largely about learning and exploring, and there's lots to see and learn here! Activities at Noisebridge include hanging out, working on personal or group projects, and scheduled or improptu workshops and classes on a range of topics, from foreign languages to photography, lockpicking, woodworking, computer programming and mathematics.

====Some times are better than others====
We have many scheduled activities in the space, and many of us have day jobs. You can coordinate the time of your visit to ensure that you can find people to talk with (and especially [[Getting_In|to let you into the building]] in the first place!)

* Are you new? Wondering when to drop by? Come by any evening - you don't necessarily have to wait for a class, an event or a meeting. Any night there will generally be people hanging out, and you're welcome to just show up, to say "I'm new!" and then get a tour, or to just relax and work on your laptop until a conversation of interest comes up.
* If you're interested in particular activities, check out our schedule, posted on the [[Noisebridge|main page]] of this site.
* If you'd like to come during unstructured time and talk with lots of people, after hours are generally best.
* If you'd prefer a quieter environment, come earlier in the day.
* If you'd like to see the anarco-syndicalist factory of how a long-living hackspace is maintaining, tag along to our [[Meeting|Tuesday 8pm meeting]], where affairs are often '''excitingly''' hashed out.
* You're unlikely to find many people in the space before noon on most days.
* This is discussed in painful detail at [[Hours]]
* The people around you may not know you well, but they might love you a bit more if you fix a random thing. Even if its just cleaning plates of dishes, helping to organize the parts bins, or tidying an obviously dirty desk.

====Who's in charge?====

YOU ARE! (with the consent of the folks around you!) Noisebridge attempts to be as leaderless and as non-hierarchical and unruly as we can get. We encourage anyone in the space to be as responsible as anyone else. If you're a new visitor, that means the member or vouchsafed guest who you first meet is as good as anyone else to ask questions of.

====Our code of conduct====
Our [[Noisebridge_Vision#Tripartite_Pillars|chief guiding principle]] is to "be excellent to one another". Please respect the other people you meet at Noisebridge and the Noisebridge space itself.
We welcome visitors because we believe in our community and want to share the things we're working on with everyone. We also have [[community standards]].

====Other people's stuff====
Please try to be careful with the things you find at Noisebridge, and recognize that the things on shelves are other people's stuff.

====Not "child-safe"====
We have not limited what we like to explore or discuss according to anyone's notions of "appropriateness" for children. Thus, anyone entering the space can be exposed to ideas, concepts, language and items which some would consider "adult-themed". We also have some tools and materials that can be hazardous for children or adults if used improperly. Children are as welcome in the space as any other person - just be prepared for what they may encounter.

====Hostile network====
The network at Noisebridge - like any public network - should be regarded as potentially hostile. This means that you should assume that any unencrypted communications over the network could be (and most likely are) monitored by others. Examples of vulnerable communications include POP3/IMAP email clients, most web browsing, IRC/AIM and similar chat protocols that are often not encrypted. While no issues have come up to date, and our code of conduct opposes malicious monitoring of others, it is wise to be aware of the potential. Stick to using SSL or secure tunnels or VPNs for anything that uses a password or that you otherwise wouldn't want other people to read. If you don't know how to protect your communications with encryption, many people at Noisebridge would be glad to help you out! (It would be nice if someone would provide links to a decent guide here.)

=====Attempt at a Semi Decent Guide=====

The most secure option you have is to set up [https://inside.mines.edu/~gmurray/HowTo/sshNotes.html an SSH tunnel] to a remote server, and then use a proxy server like [http://www.pps.jussieu.fr/~jch/software/polipo/ Polipo] to forward all your HTTP through that server. Done properly, this will encrypt all your traffic without any further worries. If you do not have SSH access to a remote server, then you can use Tor or similar to encrypt your traffic without exposing it to the Noisebridge network.

The fallback position is to ensure that as many services as possible use HTTPS by default (especially webmail) and at least have browser based solution to protect against [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross-site_request_forgery CRSF]/[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross-site_scripting XSS] attacks for everything else. This may happen even if the website itself is solid -- if you're on a compromised internal network, the attacker can inject content into any HTML page that you're reading.

Recommended Firefox Addons:

* Certificate Patrol: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/certificate-patrol/
* Perspectives: https://www.networknotary.org/firefox.html
* HTTPS Everywhere: https://www.eff.org/https-everywhere
* Noscript (even with "all access" it still catches many CSRF/XSS attacks): https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/noscript/

Recommended Chrome Extensions:

* KB SSL Enforcer: https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/flcpelgcagfhfoegekianiofphddckof
* NotScripts: https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/odjhifogjcknibkahlpidmdajjpkkcfn

Recommended General Security:

* If you use Google, [http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/02/advanced-sign-in-security-for-your.html two factor authentication] is vastly more secure than just a password.
* Although coming up with a good password is nice, you're far more secure if you use a password manager like KeyPass or 1Password. The best password is one you don't remember.
* If someone gets their hands on the physical machine, all bets are off. Try to avoid strange USB sticks and CDs, even if they look shiny.
=== Financial Reports ===

'''Financial Report - November 08, 2017'''

Noisebridge has $80,315.65 in the bank.

_Breakdown:_
$42,364.28 in the general fund, which is just over 7 months of critical expenses.
$26,092.66 for Noisetor
$5,622.15 in the equipment fund
$2,947.48 in the Thomas J. Shutt Memorial Foundation
$1,412.96 in the broadcast fund
$1121.35 in the laser maintenance fund
$375 from Friends of the Public Library to reimburse Circuit Hacking Mondays for kits
$200 in the Accessibility Fund
$179.77 in the Elevator Repair Fund
$XXX in the Roguelike Celebration fund (placeholder—all roguelike moneys treated as general fund until we reconcile numbers)

Notes:

We’ve paid our rent for November. Our lease is up at the end of August 2018, and not getting renewed. We probably need to raise a bunch of money to move somewhere else.

Some major general fund purchases: We paid to renew our PO box ($490) and our board directors insurance ($1,009). We also paid a $50 fine to the state of California for some paperwork snafu.

This running total takes into account Noisetor’s donations since October 5 and their 5% contribution to the general fund for fiscal sponsorship, as well as any hosting payments since then.

Royalty payments were added to the Thomas J. Shutt Memorial Foundation, and $125 was spent to file articles of incorporation for an independent nonprofit registered in the state Pennsylvania. Those papers were accepted, so we’re getting an EIN and applying for a 501(c)(3) federal tax exemption.

$358 in cash donations were added to the laser maintenance fund.

The Elevator Repair Fund was created and seeded with $200 by consensus. Some call button light replacements were ordered with a matching grant from the Equipment Fund.

The Accessibility Fund was created and seeded with $200 by a city requirement to spend an additional 20% of the cost of any new construction on accessibility improvements. These funds will be allocated by recommendation of the accessibility working group (TBD), which will prioritize the voices of people who are most affected by accessibility problems with the space.

The Roguelike Celebration has spent $2,062.50 on socks and $531 on metal pins. This event used to be hosted at Noisebridge and still raises money through Noisebridge’s financial infrastructure in exchange for a big donation. We will need to account for all roguelike income and expenses at some point; right now it’s all clumped into the general fund.

We have a $1,737 payment to Jakprints on October 26, possibly for stickers and t-shirts, but maybe for the Roguelike Celebration. I think this is our usual printer for t-shirts. @patrickod or @maltman23 may be able to confirm if these printing costs are for Noisebridge (general fund) or the Roguelike Celebration (which will be accounted for separately).

One caveat about the numbers in this report: It’s possible that Noisetor revenue since October 9 is missing, and their regularly scheduled hosting payment didn’t go through. If some revenue is reallocated to Noisetor, that would decrease the general fund total and increase the Noisetor total, without changing our overall bank balance. When their hosting payment goes through, that will decrease the Noisetor total and our overall bank balance by $1,547.
'''Financial Report - October 05, 2017'''

Noisebridge has $83,299.38 in the bank.

_Breakdown:_
$45,058.43 in the general fund, which is about 7-1/2 months of critical expenses.
$26,822.04 for Noisetor
$5,830.12 in the equipment fund
$3,037.48 in the Thomas J. Shutt Memorial Foundation
$1,412.96 in the broadcast fund
$763.35 in the laser maintenance fund
$375 from Friends of the Public Library to reimburse Circuit Hacking Mondays for kits
$XXX in the Roguelike Celebration fund (placeholder—all roguelike moneys treated as general fund until we reconcile numbers)

Notes:

“Critical expenses” include rent, utilities, Internet, trash collection, insurance, accounting fees, legal fees, bank fees, and state business registration fees, but does not include drink purchases, t-shirt or sticker printing, or payments for repairs and consumables. Critical expenses add up to around $6,000 per month.

This running total takes into account Noisetor’s donations since October 2 and their 5% contribution to the general fund for fiscal sponsorship, as well as their most recent payment for hosting.

$439.53 in book royalties were added to the Thomas J. Shutt Memorial Foundation.

Some equipment fund money got spent on guitars, audio mixing rack infrastructure, and PS4 controller.

Eventbrite is starting to send us money for the next Roguelike Celebration, which we’re fiscally sponsoring again this year. They’ll be making a 5% donation of their revenue to Noisebridge’s general fund, which they estimate will be around $500, but that may be higher or lower. If they have a surplus when it’s all said and done, we’ll keep it in the bank as the “Roguelike Celebration fund,” for use at the next event. All of the expenses and revenue will be forwarded to treasurer@noisebridge.net for me to crunch the numbers. Until I actually crunch those numbers, though, I’m going to just treat all suspected Roguelike revenue (like mysterious Eventbrite deposits) as “general fund” for the purposes of these financial reports.
$375 from Friends of the Public Library to reimburse Circuit Hacking Mondays for kits

Notes:

This running total takes into account Noisetor’s donations since September 19th and their 5% contribution to the general fund for fiscal sponsorship. $288 was added to the laser maintenance fund from the laser maintenance cash donation box.

By my accounting, we have 37 dues-paying members and philanthropists kicking in $2,331.80 each month. It’s possible more people are paying dues in cash, which is harder to trace. I’m following up individually with some people. We have only 14 members who I know to be current on their dues, 2 members on hiatus, and 13 members who may or may not be paying dues or on hiatus but aren’t paying dues with the email address I have on file. We have 23 philanthropists I know to be currently paying dues.
'''Financial Report - September 28, 2017'''

Noisebridge has $81,642.30 in the bank.

_Breakdown:_
$42,552 in the general fund, which is about 8-1/2 months of regular expenses.
$28,305.79 for Noisetor
$5,922.48 in the equipment fund
$2,597.95 in the Thomas J. Shutt Memorial Foundation
$1,412.96 in the broadcast fund
$475.35 in the laser maintenance fund
$375 from Friends of the Public Library to reimburse Circuit Hacking Mondays for kits

Notes:

This running total takes into account Noisetor’s donations since September 19th and their 5% contribution to the general fund for fiscal sponsorship.

We recently spent $379.74 from the equipment fund and $379.73 from the project-specific donations to the general fund to purchase a MakerBot Ultimate 3D Printer. There is currently a fundraiser for a Prusa I3.

We just paid our rent for October, so our new post-rent baseline is $42,552. Our previous baseline (September 1st) was $40,054.28, which means that the general fund grew by nearly $2,000 this month.

That gain is even more impressive considering we took a dip of $2,500 to buy all of that Club Mate near the beginning of the month and still have about 2/5 of it left.

The expected return on the remaining Club Mate is about $1,200-$1,300.

So if we count our chickens before they hatch, our general fund grew by $3,200 - $3,300 this month.
'''Financial Report - September 16, 2017 - Including Breakdown of #NB10!'''

Noisebridge has $84,486.38 in the bank.

_Breakdown:_
$45,115.61 in the general fund, which is just over nine months of regular expenses.
$28,172.79 for Noisetor
$6,336.72 in the equipment fund
$2,597.95 in the Thomas J. Shutt Memorial Fund
$1,412.96 in the broadcast fund
$475.35 in the laser maintenance fund
$375 from Friends of the Public Library to reimburse Circuit Hacking Mondays for kits

Notes:

This running total takes into account Noisetor’s donations since September 12th and their 5% contribution to the general fund for fiscal sponsorship. It also takes into account new royalty payments to Thomas’ foundation.

We got another big deposit ($1,037.53) into our checking account from Eventbrite. We don’t know why they keep giving us money, but it’s great!

We spent $587.04 from the broadcast fund for A/V, staging, and lighting equipment for the Noisebridge 10th Anniversary Exhibition & Ball (#NB10). Each of the five performers for #NB10 were paid $200 from door and drinks donations, for a total of $1,000. We made several reimbursements from the equipment fund as well related to #NB10. Drinks and other remaining expenses were paid for out of the general fund. The event was extremely net revenue positive for the space.

Miscellaneous #NB10 expenses are described here: https://noisebridge.net/wiki/NB10-Misc-Expenses-Tally

Reimbursed drink expenses were $929.96, mostly reflected in totals from previous financial reports. Total expenses from the event add up to $3,639.24, not counting Club Mate consumed. The bartenders estimated 5 boxes, or 100 bottles, of Club Mate were consumed, previously purchased with general fund money at an estimated total cost of $315. $587.04 of that came from the broadcast fund. $638.01 of that came from the equipment fund. $2,729.19 came from the general fund, inclusive of the estimated cost of Club Mate consumed.

Our total revenue over the long weekend was $4,988.60. Subtracting expenses that were reimbursed from the general fund, the general fund increased by $2,259.41 over the weekend. Subtracting all expenses, our overall total accounts increased by $1,034.36. But spending money from the equipment fund and broadcast fund is a good thing! That money is meant to be spent.

(Note: Because this takes into account the estimated cost of Club Mate consumed, technically our cash accounts increased by $1,359.36, and the cash in our general fund increased by $2,574.41. But I think the cost of Club Mate should be included in the accounting for the event, the same way we deducted the cost of purchasing alcohol. The fact that Club Mate was pre-purchased in bulk is immaterial for our purposes of analyzing the event.)

Notes:

The general fund is below its typical level because of thousands of dollars of reimbursements for Club Mate, alcohol, and t-shirts for the Noisebridge 10th Anniversary Exhibition & Ball. Expect that to flood back in over the weekend.

This running total takes into account Noisetor’s donations since September 1st, their 5% contribution to the general fund for fiscal sponsorship, and their recent $841.20 purchase of a server. It also includes several reimbursements for items available for donation during NB10:

$404.16 to Ruth for the purchase of Bulleit and beer
$460.80 to Jarrod for the purchase of custom t-shirts

This total does not separate out project-specific donations for the new 3D printer, but those donations are being recorded appropriately by donate.noisebridge.net. When the project hits the magic number, we will direct money from the general fund and a matching grant from the equipment fund to purchase the new 3D printer.

Typically when someone wants to do or change something big at Noisebridge, they bring it up at a meeting and it goes through our [[Consensus Process]]. Most of the time many of us just don't want to be troubled with spending a week figuring out if everyone is ok with a small or mundane thing, and so there's Do-ocracy. Do-ocracy tends to work just as long as our only rule is followed, to be excellent to each other.

'''Do-ocracy: If you want something done, do it, but remember to be excellent to each other when doing so.'''

An important part of being excellent is documenting your change. Write a note on Noisebridge's [[ChangeLog]], or leave a note on what you do-ocratically did. Contact numbers are especially important if you want people to contact you about the change. The biggest challenge in a do-acracy is not reversal, but ascertaining (and taking) responsibility.

==Use Cases==
====The Short Version====
# Dick asks around if anyone would feel negative about the bike shed being pink. No one does.
# Dick paints the bike shed pink.

====The Being Excellent To Each Other Version====
# Dick paints the bike shed pink.
# Jane becomes unhappy about the fact that the bike shed she helped build is now pink.
# Jane politely engages Dick in discussion about why he thought this was ok. Dick realized that other people he shares the space with have feelings too.
# Jane and Dick decide to repaint the bike shed blue.

==Notes==
* Do-ocracy works most of the time. When it doesn't, it sort of sucks.
* Write a note (with your name or nym) saying what you did.
* If someone nicely asks you to change something back, be nice back and just change it back.
* If someone's being a dick to you about something you've changed, be nice and just change it back. If you must cry about it only do so after you've restored things.
* When Do-Ocracy means Consent.
[[Image:Noisebridge_at_night.jpg|thumb|right|180px|Interact with interesting people!]]
Noisebridge is a space for sharing, creation, collaboration, research, development, mentoring, and of course, learning. Noisebridge is also more than a physical space; it's a community with roots extending around the world.

<blockquote>
For we're excellent to each other here<br />
We rarely ever block<br />
We value tools over pre-emptive rules<br />
And spurn the key and the lock.<br />
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;     &mdash; Danny O'Brien, 2010-11-09 general meeting notes
</blockquote>

''We make stuff. So can you.''

== The Idea ==

Noisebridge is an educational non-profit corporation, 501(c)3 public charity status.

We provide infrastructure and collaboration opportunities for people interested in programming, hardware hacking, physics, chemistry, mathematics, security, robotics, all kinds of art, and, of course, technology. Through talks, workshops, and [[projects]] we encourage knowledge exchange, learning, and mentoring.

As a space for artistic collaboration and experimentation, we are open to most types of art - with a special emphasis on the crossover of art and technology. From hardware labs to electronics and sound labs, most things that're creative are most definitely welcome.

Many interesting things happen in the space. We've found that sharing is essential to making this work. We strive to begin from a point of respect and trust. We believe it builds a safe community and that this best fosters innovation and creation.
Our motto is "Be excellent to each other." We also have writings on [[community standards]] and an [[anti-harassment policy]] which covers all conduct in the physical space and in our online spaces.

Leadership is taken by individual members for specific projects. We call this "sudo leadership" after the *nix command ''sudo'' which allows a regular user to do one root-level, or superuser, task. In other words, if you want Noisebridge to do something, start doing it.

Here's some paraphrasing from our bylaws:
Through talks, classes, workshops, collaborative projects, and other activities, we want to encourage research, knowledge exchange, learning, and mentoring in a safe, clean space. We provide educational spaces for teaching practical skills and theory of technology, science, and art. We provide work space, storage, and other resources for projects related to art, science, and technology that will benefit the individual members' personal growth in their fields of interest, encouraging the individual members to share their projects and knowledge for the betterment of society through art, science and technology. We create, learn, and teach, individually and as a group, inviting members of the community in the San Francisco Bay area and the world. We develop, support the development of, and provide resources for the development of free and open source software and hardware for the benefit of society. We promote collaboration across disciplines for the benefit of cultural, charitable, and scientific causes.

== Tripartite Pillars ==

===Excellence===
'''Be excellent to each other''' is the guiding principle of Noisebridge. Wikipedia uses [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Don't_be_a_dick a somewhat similar rule], which they call "''the fundamental rule of all social spaces. Every other policy for getting along is a special case of it.''" Unlike Wikipedia, Noisebridge takes a positive approach, and avoids the practice of officially enumerating the myriad potential special cases; ''' "be excellent" ''' is enough.

===Consensus===
We make official Noisebridge decisions by consensus, which means the willing consent of all of our members. Decisions are typically made at our [[:Category:Meeting_Notes|weekly meetings]] or via our online management venues, and items proposed for consensus are announced at least a week in advance to give everyone time to hear about them. Conceivably, members could block by proxy if they are unable to attend or if they wish to block anonymously.

More information on the [[Consensus Process]].

===Do-ocracy===
Doing excellent stuff at Noisebridge does not require permission or an official consensus decision. If you're uncertain about the excellence of something you want to do, you should ask someone else what they think.

== Testimonials ==

[[Testimonials | Why people love Noisebridge]]

* Smart creative people, welcoming community, friendly to newbies
* Equipment, tools, books, materials, and the space itself
* Its culture of free, open, accessible, DIY awesomeness

== Financing it ==

We self-finance through membership fees ($80 per member/month with $40 "starving hacker" rate), beverage sales, and parties, the way European hacker spaces do it. We also welcome one-time or recurring [[Donate_or_Pay_Dues|donations]] from members and non-members alike. Donations and sponsorships will accompany renovation and equipment purchase. Within the first 24 hours of renting a space, we raised over $10,000 for a cool location and meaningful projects. Within our first month, we've nearly become cash flow positive from membership dues alone. Further discussion is happening on the [[Finances]] wiki page.

== Inspiration ==
Noisebridge is inspired by similar European clubs like [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metalab Metalab] of Vienna, [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C-base CBase] of Berlin, [http://www.mi2.hr/ MAMA] of Zagreb, and [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASCII_%28squat%29 ASCII] of Amsterdam. Many other clubs of a similar stripe can be found at [http://hacklabs.org/index_en.php Hacklabs] and [http://hackerspaces.org/wiki/List_of_Hacker_Spaces Hackerspaces dot Org]. It would not be out of the question to consider Noisebridge a possible [http://events.ccc.de/2007/09/27/say-hello-to-bitkanonecccde/ San Francisco Chaostreff]. Noisebridge is a hacker space and community that shares a [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorkbot Dorkbot]-like ethic, and indeed, many of the members of Noisebridge are long-time Dorkbotters.

== The Name ==
A "noise bridge" performs useful services by injecting noise into a system. Such a device is often used in RF electronics.
Could we shoot video projectors November first and look at Net art over some beers? +1 BEER Spenceley is going to buy a case of beer for starters and finger foods. MORE BEER 6-9PM on November 1. Patrick is looking for a member to sponsor it and help organize it. Will compose a noisebridge announce email once details finalized.
* Patrick: Refresh is 24th or 25th of the month, closing the space except to hacking on the space itself! There's a riseup pad and trello board for projects to do.
* Frank: Offering to provide ethernet connections to the tables to add to our wifi. Needs a network expert such as Patrick.
* Denise: Journey to the end of the night is a giant scavenger hunt across the city for several hours Oct 31 Halloween. * Douglas: Why don't we have a water dispenser? We have a fund to get one that you can donate to. Give Trent money for the water dispenser. Tell him Noisebride sent you.
* ?: Looking for help with 3D printing help or understanding who is in charge of things? Nobody is in charge but the wiki is the first place to look for answers followed by asking those in the space and the noisebridge discuss mailing list.
* Dan: You have to be patient and get to know people to learn what kinds of resources and people might be available to help or share things with.

https://pad.riseup.net/p/minireboot

= [[ Membership Binder ]] =

* Patrick: Membership is not like anywhere else. It is not a gym. You don't have to be a member to do anything. Many of the things were done by non-members. Shelves, AV, wiring, not people who were members. People just want to make an awesome thing and NB empowers them to do it. Noisebridge is a 501c3 and all of this exists for public benefit. You can come in off the street and woodshop or 3D print. Membership is a commitment to stewardship of the space. Comes with monthly dues payment. Has tax writeoff status as a non-profit donation. It is a commitment to running the community health and maintenance of the space. You are signing up to help out and give back. Ask not what Noisebridge can do for you but what you can do. The one benefit is that you can participate in the consensus meeting with a block. What you get from membership is participation in consensus process. This is how we do really big decisions. Emotionally intense for all the right reasons and slow.
* Amy: Would the second floor decision be a consensus decision?
* Patrick: Yes. And making policy changes.
* Ben: Spending money.
* Patrick: Yes. It costs $40 or $80 or by agreement with the Treasurer.
* Patrick: Philanthropy happens to be a way to donate and have 24 hour access that is easier than applying for membership. It is like membership without the consensus blocking rights.
* To get membership, you fill out a form and get two members in good standing to sponsor you and it sits in the binder announced for 4 weeks. After 4 weeks your membership becomes a consensus item. You get asked what consensus means to you and what you like about Noisebridge etc. Then you leave the room, people discuss you and you get invited back to be a member or not.

= Applicants =
* Mari (Week one) Since I found Noisebridge, it has helped me greatly. I treat it better than I treat my own home. I help with events and run meetups here. I would like to help the space and slap arts on the wall. Wee!
* Patrick signed it. Needs one more signature.

= [[Philanthropists]]=
* To get Philanthropist, you apply with one member signature and it waits one week and then you become a philanthropist.
* [[Philanthropist/Pledge|Philantropy]], and the application process.
* Read off any names from the binder for the past month. Any applicants must have their sponsor present to vouch for them.
* If there are no objections, they're a philanthropist! Their pledge should be handed over to the [[Secretary]] posthaste, after which their token will be updated to give them the 24/7 access they've earned(?)

= Financial Report =
* Funds in bank: $36,645.04 of which $10-$11,000 is allocated to Noisetor to run large Tor exit relays for public good and benefit and accept donations for that cause and run servers in LA that help political dissidents an journalists do their work without getting caught by their oppressive government.
* This means that we have $25,000 in cash. Our operating expenses are $5000
* Rent is $4356 plus expenses.
* We must have 3 months operating expenses and we are close to having 6.
* We don't have enough recurring donations to cover costs but we would like to get more monthly donors to get all the good feels and tax breaks you should do that.
* Employers can match donations and also get the tax breaks and Patrick will schmooze your boss and any possible corporate sponsors.
* We just went through a rent increase.
* We are good in just this space. We have this awesome opportunity beneath us to expand.
* Noisetor (See the bulletpoints at the bottom of http://noisetor.net/finances/#summary):
* Any other details by those participating in handling our financials

= Consensus and Discussion =

* Based on the old Quaker meeting, this is the opposite of majority rule. You must propose a modification for specific principled objections and possible alternatives.
* If you feel a proposal is wrong, try to come in with ideas to round off the sharp edges.
* '''invite a knowledgeable volunteer to give '''[[Consensus Process|a brief primer on consensus process]]
* It is important that everyone in attendance understands at least:
** Blocking with verbalized principled objections.
** Why we use consensus over other approaches to decision making.
** How consensus isn't a legislative process
** Why consensus isn't applicable to some things like conflict resolution, resolution of time sinks, and the like.

Question: Is it possible to print the 86 list in a binder? Sure. If they won't leave, we inform them we're tresspassing, get as many people as necessary in a group to remind them they have to leave. Do not physically approach them. Police can be called if necessary.

== [[ Consensus Items History | Proposals from last week ]] ==
''(Add any items which are consensed upon or someone has raised a principle objection for to the [[Consensus Items History]] page.)''

== [[ Current Consensus Items | Proposals for next week ]] ==
''(Add any new items for consensus to the [[Current Consensus Items]] page.)''

== Discussion Items ==

If any important discussion happens, it should be happening after forward progress is made during consensus.

* Downstairs space availability
* Dan: Checking with people about who would support or block the expansion and expenses?
* what John said: Cool.
* Jarrod said: Could be nightmare, if we were serious we should buy a space for long-term sustainability.
* I would double my contribution but it might be tough.
* Where we were at before we signed the lease.
* If we're going to do it, we'd need strong consensus in a hurry.
* Next best thing would be to get someone else friendly in there, such as YCombinator with low budget startups who are expanding a pure research fund of 10M.
* LX: We could increase class attendance and promote classes to become philanthropists to increase sustained revenue.
* Spencer: The devil you know is better than one you don't.
* Patrick: The building is owned by elderly couple. This rent is their retirement. Total family thing. Managed by son. Our space was an extension to the clothing business. Not zoned for office space so it can't get market rate. We pay around $.80/sqft. Only businesses that will pay the low rate will accept conditions. Unlikely to get boring folks downstairs.
* Double union just signed a lease a week off into dogpatch.
* We can't get down to look at it yet.
* We have a very small classroom that's constantly packed and under capacity. It would be amazing to expand classes and move loud things to the same floor.
* If Noisebridge expands, what kind of financial situation are we leaving the next wave of Noisebridgers?
* If we do it, we need a big matching donation fund from institutions to double donations?
* Grants are too short a timeline.
* Space will be on market December timeline.
* We need an exceptional grantwriting speed to get a grant.

Mari: I've wanted to do a fundraising event for a while. The Made is doing a kickstarter for their second space for the video game museum.
* We did an Indiegogo last year and the rewards and tiers are still being fulfilled. Could we get a scaleable reward set. Indiegogo took around a dozen people to fullfill.

* What ideas do we have for new things we could do in a bigger space?
* A VR room could bring in a lot of enthusiastic users.

* Dan: Could we do a trial month to month to test it out and reality check for our financial reports and get bigger.
* Lessons learned from fundraising before. 1.5 years, we endeavored to raise $25K and are still recovering. We would be doing twice that per year.
* Ceilings are almost this high and ith as more internal walls.
* Raylah: We could open space to filmmakers?
* Joyt: the tour of downstairs felt less open than this divided into two and narrow spaces.
* Dan: gallery?
* We could divide it into 10 20x20 studios.
* It would be hard to subdivide without it being partly unrentable.

*Could it be a separate LLC for the second rental to keep the $10,000 net limit three ways. Pulling an IKEA. Don't be excessive and get tax fraud.
*Profit management mechanism with the same board.
* Since you control both ends you can write a lot of the expenses of one donating to the other?

* Dan: We've been trying to grow funds and we do it slowly.

= End of Meeting =

* Reprise of the [[Hackernationale]]. [This is anarchy - we do what the wiki says!]
* [[PGP|PGP Key Signing]] could happen now (if it doesn't happen '''before''' any given Meeting). Ask others around the space or check the [[PGP|list]] to see who wants in on the action.
* Return the [[membership binder]] to its rightful location.
* Clean and tidy the meeting notes including removing all these really verbose instructions, then save them to the wiki.
* Send a summary of the meeting notes to the discussion list.
* Enjoy the company of your fellow hacker, robot, or robothacker.
* Discuss any items for which there was not time during the meeting.

Anyone can learn to solder! Even if you have never made anything in your life, you can learn this very useful and enjoyable skill. It really is fun! [[User:maltman23|Mitch]] has taught tens of thousands of people to solder all around the world, and he can teach you, too! Add yourself to the ever increasing community!

=== Topics ===
As interest warrants:
* soldering (everything from through-hole to SMD rework)
* breadboarding
* powering your circuit (bench power supplies, ATX hacking, batteries)
* making LEDs blink and fade
* programming microcontrollers
* using AVR / Arduino / Boarduino to make circuits easier
* using oscilloscopes / multimeters to debug circuits
* reverse engineering circuits
* Designing PCBs using GEDA and EagleCAD

=== Who? ===
Everyone is welcome, regardless of experience level or age. If you have never made a circuit before and have no idea where to start, bring a few dollars ($10 to $30 to cover materials costs of a Brain Machine kit or other cool kits) and build it. Everyone gets personal attention, and everyone will learn enough to complete their project. If you have experience, please come and enjoy working on your project with others -- and share what you know!

=== Why? ===
Learn and share with others of all skill levels! You can come with an idea, or a question, or a circuit you want to hack. You can research ideas on the Internet ahead of time and come put them into practice! Or, you can learn with a large selection of easy-to-make kits that are available each week.

=== What can I bring to help? ===
No need to bring anything -- just yourself and your desire to play, learn, and/or share. We have everything you need. But if you like, you can bring:<br>
* Your own tools (we have all you need, but you can bring your own)
* Arduino / clones
* USB - serial dongle for your Arduino
* breadboards
* If you bring your laptop, we can set it up to program microcontrollers
* 9V or AA or AAA or other batteries (a bulk donation would be great)
* parts for your own project(s)

=== I am a blank slate! What should I do? ===
* make one of the many easy kits that are available each week.
* make an Arduino fade an RGB LED in varying color patterns.
* make a microcontroller illuminate a 3x3 LED matrix in varying shapes.
* reverse engineer something you're curious about.
* come to Noisebridge and brainstorm!<br>
