The black line is the sloper, poly rope. Insulating. If you want, can be
monofilament nylon (make sure it is UV resistant) to be gossamer invisible.

Red is the vertical antenna. Feed point is somewhere near the bottom ...
(doesnt have to be in the center like the textbook Franklin Collinear).

Each section is lambda/2. Each bubble is a lambda/4 stub .. which can be
rolled over a cardboard tube (or plastic tube). If you make a hairpin, and
carefully coil the twisted bifiliar pair of wires, then the calculation
will be easier as the self-inductance of the "coil" will be minimal, but
the phasing comes from the stub. If you space out the coil as a single
well-spaced layer over a 15cm long tube, then self-capacitance will be
minimized. That self-L and self-C are not harmful, but just complicate
calculations.

You can also keep the hairpins horizontal and tie each to the orange
drop down. Then the calculations are easiest! But it now looks like a
ladder .. easier to spot by eye, and counterindicated if you want to keep
it stealth.

The Orange drop down is another Franklin Collinear, but it is parasitic. Or
it can simply be a straight wire dropdown. Or simply dont make the orange
wire; something or the other in the building will be reflective enough.
I'd bet the orange is not worth thinking about .. so just 'fuggetaboutit'.

Feed the bottom most end of the red antenna wire with a J-pole like
configuration. Needs an extra non-radiating lambda/4 .. but height is
cheap, and you need height anwyay -- the bottom parts of the antenna cant
see over the terrain.

Tuning a wire antenna will be tight, narrow band. And a Franklin
Collinear at N sections, so when you tune the lengths to have
tune all of them equally. ie. take apart and rebuild. Painful.
So, dont calculate .. get a nanoVNA.

Each batch of wire is different. So forget data sheets for wires,
which dont exist anyway. Buy the exact wire you plan to use. From
that same batch of wire.

1. Make a dipole - 10% longer than calculation. Hang it as far in 'free
space' as you can. Cut an exact tuned dipole for 144.630 using the nanoVNA.
(not 144.230 .. tweak your antenna for your Tx not your Rx.)

2. Hang the dipole lambda/4 from the exact yellow wall. Check again with
the nanoVNA. (stand far away, operate nanoVNA remotely, is that possible?)

3. Make a two section Franklin Collinear with a J-pole feed. Install
lambda/4 from the yellow wall. Check with a nanoVNA.

4. Tweak, discard, make a new one, discard,.... lather, rinse, repeat.
Till you have a perfext 2 section collinear for 144.630 MHz.

You will have to adjust the lambda/2 length, the lambda/4 harpin, the
lambda/4 j-pole feed. So maybe you will throw away and start with new wire.
That's why a 2 segment test case.

The offset of the j-pole feedpoint doesnt matter as long you have perfect
resonance (we only care about the dip, no matter what exact resistance
value you see at the dip). SWR does not matter. Only dip frequency matters.

5. Now build the 7 or 11 segment Franklin collinear. Check resonance dip
with nanoVNA. Should be perfect (else see how much off it is, and make a
new antenna everything scaled by that ratio).

6. Finally adjust the feedpoint tap of the J-pole feed for perfect match.

7. If you need to use a coax feed, make the coax be an exact multiple of
lambda/2 (after accounting for velocity factor, as measured by nanoVNA,
not from speed of light formula). Then coax mismatch will matter least.

given resolution).

The square grid roads are probably mostly flat plateau. And then "Bernal
heights" park clearly slopes down .. as evidenced by the "terraced" roads
that follow the terrain.

South of the terraced roads, obstruction buildings are a non-issue.

The only tall building south of you is Chavez School building. And even
that is off the beam, and any case doesnt matter because your beam is
probably 36 deg or so wide.

Using this antenna gain calculator as a rough ballpark of beam width angle;
to support the above sentence.

Oh yea. Indeed. How about a thin tall fiber-glass pole flush against their
wall. If the foot of the pole is a meter away from the wall, and on a heavy
cinder-block (or drill your root top) that will not budge on your root top,
then the pole will bend and push against the wall. Friction will keep it
in place. Two monofilament fishing line guy wires forming a triangle, and
flat against the wall will make it absoultely still. It is not "attached"
to their wall.. (friction is not attachment :-) There's a chap on the
street view map who is leaning on that building .. he is not nailed to
the wall is he? :-)

You can also put up a freestanding fiberglass fishing pole, and three guy
wires. Tigthen the guy wires taut, and the fiber-glass pole will bend a
bit and under tension will stay stiff. But I like the pushed against the
wall much better.

The theme in the above is something thinner and under tension with friction
leveraging the wall might be actualy taller and stronger than a traditional
"professional" mast. Insects have stronger muscles, per mass, than the elephant.
And gossamer can be stealth.

Or maybe he is feeding it by a tap on the center hairpin. So the center
hairpin is the quarter-wave matching section. Some of the other people's
drawings seems to say that -- which makes sense. If so that'd be okay.

Anyway... that's digging into detail of this specific antenna. Your antenna
is different and an opportunity to make entirely other mistakes or get it
right in an entirely different way :-)

== Project Summary ==
Spacebridge is a project that documents the necessary steps to produce a cheap and easy deployment platform for lofting instrumentation and photographic equipment into the stratosphere. We approach this project with a heavy slant towards education, with a hope to bring science education away from something that you know because of a dusty old book, to a hands on experience.

The Spacebridge project is run out of the Noisebridge hacker community, a non-profit educational corporation for public benefit provides an infrastructure for technical-creative projects.

The Spacebridge project can be broken up into 3 parts. The payload delivery system, payload bus, and the payload itself.

The delivery system is currently a meteorological weather balloon that lofts our system about 100k feet into the air (commercial airlines fly at around 32k feet). The system also includes flight lights for increased visibility, a radar reflector dish for visibility by radar tracking systems, and a four foot parachute to help slow the decent.

The payload bus is an environmentally protecting enclosure that keeps all the payload items secure and in a known orientation and attached to necessary ports. It also protects the electronic equipment from the cold (it's around -30 degrees up there).

Lastly, we have the payload itself. We currently loft 2 cameras that have been hacked so that custom software can be run on them. We also send up an android cell phone which records accelerometer, magnetometer and GPS data, and text messages me the GPS data for our recovery. We also send up a secondary tracking system that consists of a commercial GPS tracking system, an opentracker (a custom made system to convert the GPS signals into APRS data packets) and a ham radio to transmit those data packets.

Liz - I'm looking at every past meeting, back through June 2019 so far and still going further back. Big M Members are different from just being a member of the community, this is the highest trust level of the noisebridge community, it means that everyone in the community trusts that you would make good decisions about how noisebridge can move forward. This is an annoying bureocratic level of trust, as the only theoretical benefit is that you get to block big C concensus items, and vote on who we place on our board. To become one, you need to go through a four week process, where you fill out a membership form sponsored by two big M members. You bring it to a tuesday meeting where it is submitted, your membership will be discussed at that meeting, then at the next tuesday meeting your membership is discussed again and if it gets to concensus, you will be asked to leave the room while the members present decide if they want to block you or not, if no Member blocks your membership application you become a Member. For the next two weeks any big M member can retroactivly block your membership for any reason. If you get blocked figure out why, fix the issue and then reapply at a later time.

concensus is the process by which things that can't be done through basic do-ocracy (things that affect others in the space.) It has two flavors, small c and big C. Small c concensus is the process where things that might cause slight issues in the space (events, big projects, moving rooms, etc), you just talk with the community before doing things. Big C concensus is the process by which action are taken at noisebridge that are too big, too expensive, or too critical to be done by small c concensus. These are things like Moving, spending a lot of money, or doing legal bureucratic garbage. This is a two week+ process where an item is propsed one week (if possible you should already have the item posted in draft concensus items, and the binder). At that meeting it will be discussed for a while, then the next week it will be discussed again, and if people feel confident, it will be brought up for concencus, and if no big M member blocks the consensus item it passes and becomes a Consensed item.

Every quarter we asses our ratio and if crypto is over 20% of our total monetary assets we sell the equivelant of the remainder value to cash. We will not buy crypto to maintain the ratio.at the time of assessment the amount of money in crypto that would have to be sold to make the ratio 20% will be broken into a monetary value for selloff that would take the equivelant of 2 months to sell off. Last time it was .75 of a bitcoin. any other forms of crypto are converted to bitcoin. there have been discussions of swapping to a stable coin.

as the price of bitcoin fluctuates during the selloff period. We will extend or shorten the selloff period until we get to 20% and wait for the next quarter to access.

A stablecoin option would give us another investment that we sell to get to 20%, but it would not have the chance of losing value in the way bitcoin can.

Events and the space in general

Dan- We should not have any event in the space, I might be at noisebridge for the meeting, but am working on the space while here.

The edge in my voice is a worry about the safety issue. SF is doing just ok, but the mission is a highly elivated risk area. It is one of the worst in SF. Noisebridge has no reason to be open without the stuff set up in place. We have no proper precautions set up.

We need to spend time building the new space. We can not have any event iin the space. Noisebridge is closed.

Pyconaut: I agree with not having events. But also, how do we get people in the space to work on stuff? People have been nagging about finding a way for them to work on the space without being able to be in the space. I'm trying to get people in the space to work on the space. I streamed anime in the space on Halloween to attract people to work on the space.

X: I don't think you need to make it an event. We're just looking for 1-2 volunteers at a time. Dan and I can help introduce them to the space and facilitate productivity. I suggest connecting with one person to get them in here instead of making an event-like thing.

Dan: Did you get any work done on Halloween? I call B.S. Halloween is a super COVID spreader day.

Pyconaut: We hadn't tried anything like that before. It didn't work, so I won't do it again. Not many people came to work. Just some people came to drop off donations. It was so much time to set up the streaming out front, that it wasn't really worth it. Other than doing a 3am virtual tour, it didn't help at all, I agree.

A lot of people will say they're going to do something and end up doing something different... People can come and work on the space, it's that simple. You don't have to incentivize them. The idea of having a "party" and have fun and do work, it's not safe and not fun for the people who are here to really do work.

Pyconaut: I've been flakey. I shouldn't have set myself with lofty goals to pressure people to work in the space on certain days, and seeing no one responding so I decided not to go in. I need to be better about believing people will be at NB, or that I can do stuff alone without hurting myself or breaking anything. I don't feel comfortable working at the space without someone who moved the space there as well because I'm worried I'll move something that people put a lot of work into setting up.

Dan: I appreciate that. I'm drawing a hard line, but it's not up to me. I'm just here to observe and advise. I urge people to be careful.

Pyconaut: I think we don't have enough alcohol wipes. We have some gloves, and touchless cleaning supplies. I think we need to ask what they want at NB that would make them feel safe in coming to help out. For me, if every room had disinfecting wipes and hand sanitizer, I would feel a bit safer about using tables and moving things around the space. Or if we make gloves more accessible around the space. How far do we want people to have to walk to get paper towels or throw something away?

X: We talked about using one of the desks in the electronics room. You could have one desk as a streaming desk and another as your work table, with santizer there. Something like that could help make maintained areas for people to use.

Pyconaut: Yes.

X: Also, this is our first meeting where we're officially moved out of 2169 Mission. And now we can focus on moving in to 272 Capp. Thank you to everyone who came out! Also, Dan here has been busting his ass over the last few weeks.

Pyconaut- SF election is mess

Zack- SF election has many cool things

Zack- curcit reflow ovens, to get both reflow ovens working would be about 80 dollars. Looking forpeople to chip in

Dan- reflow ovens are cool, we should try to get them fixed. Software might be bad, but it is hackable.

Zack- THe displays are kind of bad, and are really proprietary. New parts would come with a new screen. Would be easy to do the new firmware updates if new motherboards were added.

Zack- SMD parts robert droped off, and it needs sorting, we need some bins to help sort it. Bin's need to hold a lot of bags of parts. Large tupperware would work probably.

Zack- Reparing comuters, do people need doner laptops right now?

Dan- There is a noisebridger who needs one. Alax May

Zack- Specs are athalon 2, dual core, 2.2 Ghz, 3GB ram, 500GB hard drive.

Zack- how are computer donations doing right now.

Zack- how can we get the word out for getting more laptops and more recent computers.

Ryan - maybe not right now (during our closure), but it could be useful to re-rig laptops, give them a second life.

Zack - They know the laptops is worth money, but they won't sell it.

TJ- can we reach out to ewaste people. Is there an industry companny that specialises in this?

Dan - Do you know tech soup?

Ryan - I've talked to ewaste companies and such back in the early 2000's, but I have no idea what happened recently.

Dan - Idk if being the new ewaste collector is a good idea, but we don't have as much space, time, and energy for it (and that's all we need lol). Have a dedicated person, no work for other people. I've moved so much shizzle, if ppl aren't moving their shizzle, they forget how painful and hazardous it is.

Ryan - we need to limit what we take, or take it ourselves. Re desktops, any desktop made after 2008 would be fine, any laptop after 2008 as well. But we need to check functionality beforehand. We can get a lot of donated old computers, but may not be helpful in itself. If we want to have a repair shop, great. But that should be afterward. We have so many computers that are so old and finnicky, they're basically obsolete.

Zach - Let's put together what kinds of laptops/computers labeling we DO what. We can detail for days what we don't want. We should make a laptop repair group like before. Getting the word out to organizations over individuals is key. Grandma's laptop isn't as good as SF state's recently outdated computers.

Ryan - Schools and such often have end-of-life return policies.

Zack - We could talk about this for hours. It could be true for bigger organizations, but maybe not for the little guys.

Ryan - E waste recycles at City college, I could talk with them. They may have other stuff (chairs that are more recent)

Zack - That can also encourage people to come to and donate to NB. Win-win. I've approached small biz like the Women's building, and offered to help with their equipment. We could get the Circle of Life going of donating and repairing like the glory days. Rejuvinate the old spirit.

Ryan - We need to get the space to function first, so once it reopens we can get up to speed quickly.

Zack - Just get the conversation going. Maybe get a laptop here or there. It's better than waiting 6 additional months to build these connections.

Ryan - I don't have time for this, but we need to volunteer this.

Zack - Just distribute the work among everyone, no need for specific, time-intensive group

Dan - Let's talk about this a lot -- later. For now, let's get to having classes at noisebridge. I have a perspective, from reading SF city of public health directives for higher education, will share once it's brought up. There's a TON.

Classes

Ryan - Zack mentioned CHM. Have you read the City education ^^^ but it explains much of what we need to do to have NB classes in person.

Zack - That wasn't the topic I wanted to have. I wanted virtual classes, not physical ones

Dan - For sure!

Ryan - (agrees)

Zack - Zach has strong opinions about COVID, and wishes to stick to virtual classes.

Ryan - Do you think NB has the ability to meet those criteria ---

Dan - NO.Well, maybe. But a lot of work. Maybe 10 hours to get the basics, not fun, but if they really want to do it, they can. No corner-cutting though.

One example: Contact tracing could be *kind of* handled, but goes against anonymity principle.

need to have written plan, with summary, handed to everyone coming in, screen them for COVID, etc.

Zack - Since it was broached, let's go into this. 2 weeks ago, the mayor talk about reopening and such. Within a week, there were covid spikes, 1,000 dead, and the mayor rescineded her previous policy. The mayor herself has made mistakes that lead to increased infection. We need to analyze the risks ourselves. Let's move forward, though.

Pyconaut- I proplsed the question, because I agree with the thought that noisebridge can not have in person classes.

Zack- Online classes. I taught a 4 part online class about PCB design a few weeks ago and it went well. I want to do a arduino class, but no one responded online. But not interested in cat hearding people online.

How can we get the word out better. Propmotion time should not need to be done by the teacher.

TJ- without having in person passer by people, it is hard to get new people interested. Split in communication channels is also hard. And is not invting for most people. Meetups are also not very useful right now without people

Dan- How people find out what is happening.

Carl- Many spaces are having almost nothing happening (sudo room, omni, etc).

Zack- Online Curcit hacking Monday had almost no one showing up.

Zack- a lot of people are turning inward and not seeking out learning new things.

Carl- I feel I need to call into meetings to have personal connection

TJ- Medium might be more of an issue then intrest.

Zack- might be a lack of curiosity right now.

Pyco- I agree with TJ, I think medium is impotaint, it could be done on Twitchh or youtube, as those have been very popular.

Dan - CHM has done well with kits. Learn how to solder, solder together a circuit, with blinkenlicht, *some hardware*. Physical distribution of kits is something to consider, but something physical to work on and get familiar with. (less screen exposure), maybe some community interactivity through Q and A. Otherwise, we are just saturated with video.

TJ- It's why cooking is so ppopular right now.

Zack- I have been making arduino shields

Ryan - people are *reserved* for learning new things , and arduino is super easy

Zack - I don't want to make a whole class if no one is interested. That's why I do interest check. Not going to spend energy of cirricula that go nowhere. I want more interest.

Ryan - It's a catch 22 People won't say their interested if they get nothing out of it right now. I usually sign up for things I'll never do. But now I won't sign up for things if I don't get anything out of it due to stress. People may think if they say they're interested, it implies commitment.

Zack - i don't want to baby people, and it kills my interest in teaching. Maybe it's just me.

Dan - I hear you. What is your motivation as a teacher? Let's address that, just to get the perspective of seeing a lack of NB activity (vs. normal), but a lot of opportunity to make use of special moment of our future history. We do not want to deal with many people. We got work, and 5 ppl who show up are more interested in teaching than learning. We're in a good position to enjoy our position. We can pay rent for a year, maybe we should slow down and build ourselves up for when people come in. We don't have to reach out to the masses yet. Takes a while to get the group.

Not a lot of people doing things at NB, and that's ok. It's a vacation; let's make the most of it.

Zack - I think we are expressing different desires, coming from different places. You're in the space and doing more than I do, so you're maybe overworked. I'm not there. I think classes are fun, and am excited about doing it virtually. I won't be able to get into physical space when virtual is over. So I enjoy this time to connect with people. It was awesome to attend CHM then. I'm not worried about potential debt and stuff. I'm just learning cool things, and would love to share that with ppl.

Ryan - I'm more in the middle. I want to fix NB, but I know we're in a place where online events would be awesome for the community. I think they can be explored separately. Amount of people interested in either is very small, and overlapping. Most of ppl here are interested in both. Everyone has taught at least 1-2 things and has a deep interest in making space better for community. There's a conflict of interest / avenue. I want to teach online classes too, and get NB happening. Want to host meetings / events at NB to get (online) interest in NB. Just have teacher at noisebridge, so online learners can see the space. That can get people interested, make classes a bit easier. We had 8 ppl on Discord show up to watch anime and chat and it was AWESOME (+1 from TJ). There are different things that can be done, and get online classes going. How do we get interest to focus our efforts? (after all, writing a cirriculum for nothing will be counterproductive if no one is interested).

Zack - I don't want ppl to do a lot of work, just interest

Carl- Can somethnng happpen

TJ- CHM was often a gatway, while people don't fee like joining a new community right now.

We might not all want to talke a class, but many o us are learning new stuff. Stuff like 5mof is really good at allowing people to share what they are learning, they then can show intrest afterwards.

Dan - Re classes in the driveway : I think it would be safe, depending on who shows up, BUT gov't regulations (written in *blood* iirc) will say (for adult education programs of classes for students), we'd have to do SO much work. We may have one person at a time to work on equipment. But having a class will bring a lot more paperwork with the government. The most we can do rn is basic operations. We have to thread the needle here. Don't call it a "class", because that puts up in deep water. NB is closed until we can open safely, only people who help invited. Don't listen to the city, make our own decisions. But also, don't cross them.

Pyco- I agree, teachers might be ok in the space, but not students.

Carl- I started to set up Flashen Taschen in the new noisebridge. We might need to reflash the SD card.
